having the infamous issue with Search Indexer using 100% CPU. can kill it and things are okay again, but he would like to have it index his drive. Is there a way to schedule search indexer to run and then stop? I did a quick search of the internet and these forums, but couldn't find anything.

I just did it now and it said "done, now we need to restart" I click restart, it boots up and it STILL says I need to update! Could it be because, this computer ALSO has Microsoft Office 2003? If Office 2003 the problem, or is my luck just crap bad nowadays?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use a laptop at the office and at home. My problem is that Vista won't update its network settings automatically when I change from one network to another. Per example, my office network has 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 addresses and my home network has 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 addresses. When I arrive at home and the computer connects to the network, it keeps its 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 address, which of course results in limited connectivity. I have to use the Repair tool each time to get the connection back (and it means waiting for a looooong minute in front of the computer...)

now i know there is an automatic way of backing up files and folders using windows vista but i was wondering if there was a way of automatically backing up my complete system. now i've tried using Acronis True Image for this but i'm afraid that i won't be able to restore if my boot drive gets corrupt or i don't have an OS to installed Acronis to and load the back up image.

View 6 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know a freeware program that can convert multiple dvr-ms files automatically to wmv or avi? My Playstation 3 can play media from my Vista desktop computer. Unfortunately, it can not play the dvr-ms file type Media center creates.
I record multiple TV shows on a day. Vista windows movie maker can convert them from dvr-ms to wmv, but can convert 1 file per project. Converting takes very long, so if I have to convert them manually 1 by 1, it takes too much time.
What I would like is to have a program that can convert multiple dvr-ms files simultaneously or through a automatic waiting list. Just like Windows media player can do with MP3. You place a CD in your computer, choose which songs you want to convert to MP3, and media player converts them automatically 1 by 1. You don???t have to do anything else.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and connect to the internet via a wireless router (Sky). I installed MSE a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking yesterday I found that it actually does not update (automatic or manual), instead it gives me the error message "Virus & Spyware definitions update failed. MSE was not able to check for updates - make sure computer is connected to the interned and try again", even though I am clearly connected to the internet (actually using it whilst trying to update MSE).
Having read your forum I uninstalled MSE, used a clean up tool to remove any potential remainders of previous anti-spyware programs and re-installed MSE. Initially the virus update worked fine, scanned the laptop and thought problem sorted. This morning, out of interest, I tried to update the virus definitions again, just to see if it works, but no, I am now getting the same error message again...also, for quite some time now, when Windows informs me that there are updates available and I try to install these I get an error message, plus I can't log into Messenger either?
The other day I recieved a automatic update, so as normal I accepted it since then IE8 does not even load. Things I've tried: Tried to uninstall IE8, but can't find it in "Remove programs" Tried to system restore, but won't allow past the download date Tried Re-installing it, but keeps giving me a error message "you have a newer version already installed on system"
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is my 4th Vista install on this box in a week and a half. This time I failed to uncheck the "activate automatically" box after I entered the key. Checking System, it says I have 3 days before automatic activation. How do I kill that? - if this one flies, it won't be ready for at least 5 days.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have gone to "Control Panel" and selected "system" and turned automatic update to automatic and set a time to that it should happen at every day. I have also gone into "Security Center" and tried to turn it on, but it says error:1058 and won't let me. I've even gone onto windows.com to scan computer for updates, but won't allow me to without having automatic updates on. And then it gives steps of how to do so. clicking on START and clicking RUN typing in services.msc to change all 3 things of what it says to to get automatic updates to turn on. NOTHING HAS WORKED, I've defragmented and cleaned disk for the computer, upgraded my virus/ spyware software and tried lookin up for solutions and haven't found any.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWe've bought an HP 2710p tablet and built up the pre-installed Vista Business OS to work on our network. putting domain, installing bespoke software, taking the pre-installed crap off, etc. A user had it and was working fine for a few weeks and his story was that it was running low on battery, so he plugged it in, then went away for a bit. He comes back and finds the thing re-installing itself to factory settings!
I found that hard to believe, but upon taking re-possession of it, that's exactly what's it done - seemingly no questions asked! A crash is one thing, but a complete automatic factory recover! Have to say we're not best pleased. Why would it do that and how do i stop if from doing anything on its own terms again?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have both my windows defender and my anti-virus program set to automatically scan my computer at 2 am on a daily basis. I usually put my computer into hibernation when I am done working on it and for some reason it doesn't seem like either one of these programs is doing what it should be doing. If I actually do a complete shutdown on my computer then after I restart it it tells me that my computer hasn't been scanned in x amount of days. I thought I had everything set up correctly but I guess I may be missing something. I have never had an issue like this. Every other computer I have had things worked and scanned just fine like they were set up to do.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just set up a wireless modem for my dad, who'd had a wired modem for 18 months. It's more convenient but it takes a while to get linked up, especially as the wireless has to be manually started with two keys. I've clued my dad up a a fair bit but he tries to get surfing before it's all going properly. Because I normally use Ubuntu now my own wireless is on a few seconds past the BIOS screen, I suppose, and I wondered if there is some registry alteration or something that can be made so that the wireless is always on once Vista starts up.
Or maybe the wireless process can be put into the startup programs? I wouldn't know what the process or software is called (whether it's among Vista's programs or the Advent's add-on stuff). If Ubuntu running on the same laptop would allow immediate wireless I imagine there's no hardware reason why this can't be done. Normally it's a case of pressing Fn and F10 with Vista. If the laptop is merely restarted rather than turned off and on the wireless remains on. The waiting wouldn't bother me, but my dad being of a certain age is not mad keen on change and different procedures.... I stop short of
seeing if you can use eBay with carrier pigeons....
I have Vista Home Premium. SP1 doesn't show up on automatic updates, and I can't find it to download manually? I read here that it was available yesterday.
