So I turned on my PC this morning ( vista 64 bit ) and I could not connect to the internet. I hover my mouse over the little internet connection icon in the botom right hand corner and it says local access only. Has anyone else had this roblem? Is more information required (more than likely) jsut let me know. This is jsut another reason to have vista.

I use 3 mobile broadband and this worked fine until i upgraded the hardware to a faster version. When i did this i could not connect to the internet on my 2nd laptop. I was getting the message "local access only". My other laptop still worked fine on the new dongle so I could live without my 2nd laptop on my home internet as i primarily use this one for college anyway. However, i then decided to get a mobile broadband router. When i connect this up i can detect the network on both laptops and connect to it but i am now getting the message "local access only" on both computers.
I have spent literally hours of my life on the phone running through every kind of test with my isp and still have gotten nowhere. They cannot identify the problem and are telling me that there actually isn't one and can't understand why its not working!
i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

In the network are 3 computers, 2 Vista desktops, 1 XP Home which acts as a file and printer server and a Draytek router behind a cable modem. The 2 Vista PC's are new and both have the same problem. When the XP machine was the desktop PC this problem never occurred, and it still doesn't as the XP machine always has a live internet connection (the cable provider is wonderfully reliable). But now, I wake up and get ready to do some work on it, and the damn thing is local access only. I skyped with my dad last night, so I know it was working perfect before I went to bed. However, I believe I left it on so It might have updated something I am unaware of. I did a system restore back to 3 days ago. I have another laptop, a toshiba, and it can connect fine. I have hard reset my router (which usually fixes the connection problems). And I have also restarted the laptop, disabled and reenabled the wireless network connection, turned off and on the wlan switch on front. On my router their is no security set. Its just boot up and go. I sure also add that the Sony is Vista Home Premium 64bit, while the toshiba is Widows Vista Home Basic 32bit.

Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.
I have a Samsung Vista Home laptop that has connected to the internet without problem for over 2 years. It cannot connect now, either wirelessly or wired, but two other computers running XP can connect both wired and wireless. The connection shows as 'local access only'. I have it plugged directly into the comcast modem but get the "local access only" message that seems to be such a problem for wireless users. When doing ipconfig /renew I get a message stating that windows could not contact the dhcp server. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the modem as it works fine with XP and Linux machines. Everything I have found related is talking about wireless issues and I've tried the registry edit provided by MS for setting the dhcp flag value to 1 and also disabled IPv6 and power options in the adapter configuration.

I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?

I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a local Intranet (a local website, not file share system) and I am using IIS 7 because this is a very advanced asp.net website. I have got it working on my machine, but I cannot get it to work on any other machine connected to my network. They can all access my file share and normal network, but cannot use the IIS localhost.
I have read about changing the Hosts file, but when I try to ping localhost, I do not get a valid IP to enter in the Hosts file. I am obviously doing something wrong. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?

Find out more about Localhost. There is a very good article here: localhost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This will explain about the default Localhost IP. For IPv4 it is 127.0.0.1 and for IPv6 it is ::1. Pinging the LocalHost usually gives you the IPv6 ::1 IP address. You may type 127.0.0.1 into your browser, however aliased websites in other locations will NOT work. Set your computer with the IIS website on it to static IP. Type in to your browser (on any computer on your network) your now static IP, and you CAN put a forwardslash and your aliased website in other locations. I think you can now add this to the Hosts file to make a nice alias on any computer. I will probably write a tutorial on this when I get around to it.
I have a home (workgroup, not domain) network with a bunch of Vista SP1 PCs and one XP SP3 PC. Before I upgraded Vista SP1 PCs to SP2, all PCs could see and share files among each other. After I upgraded two of the Vista PCs to Vista SP2, the XP PC cannot see their shared folders. The Vista SP2 PCs show up in the list, but when I try to see the shared folders I get an error message "\XP2PC is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I've rebooted everything including the router. All the Vista PCs, whether SP1 or SP2, can see each other's shares. The problem is only with the XP PC -- it appears that SP2 broke something.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to access the public folder from another computer on my local network. After failing I started diagnosis at the local machine. I have UAC turned off and have shared the public folder (c:userspublic) with full control, change and read for everyone in share and Full control for everyone in the security tab. I can access the folder in windows explorer. If I select start network, machine name, public, I get a message that \machinenamepublic is not accessible. Network and sharing center show the following:
Network Discovery on
File Sharing on
Public floder sharing on (password required)
Printer sharing off
Password Protected Sharing on
Media sharing off
If I click on the link to show me all the files and folders that I am sharing nothing is displayed.
This is all local, not via the network.
I have been doing this for years in XP and Server 2003, but recently I have been installing Vista x64 Edition for some specific needs. This code is part of a workstation startup script that pulls the description from AD and makes it the local description on the computer. This does not work in Vista x64 or Server 2008 x64 and I have found no explanation on the Internet as of yet. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6
The network icon shows access Local Only. The network and sharing center shows a red X to the internet. However, I have internet access. It's just reporting that I don't. This is intermittent. Sometimes rebooting solves the issue but the Local Only icon can come back shortly afterwards.

All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.
I bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................

After about 15 minutes or when I come back from 'hibernate', etc., I get "Local Access Only". I've replugged the modem power cord but most times the repair message is to connect a cable to the adapter.... which defeats the purpose of a laptop. Belkin was installed first with and then without using an Ethernet cable; I get local access only message both ways. And perfect Internet when I do plug in the cable. I've spent hours on the phone with Belkin Support; no luck. My XP PC, using Linksys adapter, picks up the connection beautifully. What to do?

I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. I'm trying to connect to some unsecure wireless networks at a friend's house for the first time and am only able to connect with local access.
I try diagnose and repair and it says that there are no issues. Three other computers are connecting to the internet just fine.
They signal is good, and there is supposedly data being sent and received but no programs will connect to the internet.
This issue has never happened before. I regularly run a registry cleaner and tried restoring to a backup from a couple days ago and that didn't help.
Recently built out of spare parts and some new parts a Media Center PC. Loaded Vista Ultimate X64 on the box and have it hard wired to my network. Issue is limited connection on my network and no internet connection. All was working great until SP1 was installed. Since then I can not access the internet, ping my router or see my WHS or my wifes XP Pro laptop, but I can see and access my daughters laptop running Vista Home Premium and my laptop running Windows 7 RC1.
I have tired to disable IPv6 both through the proprieties on my nick and through the registry, no effect. Tried netsh winsock reset, no effect, also when I go into network settings network discovery is turned off, I enable it with no effect, next reboot it is off again. I saw a post about putting local services group in the administrators group, no effect. I have a D-Link DI524 router my MC PC is showing up in the assigned IP tables, the IP that is returned when I do an ipconfig matches the one issued by the router. As I stated before I had NO network connection issues until SP1 was installed. Is my only option to un-install or remove SP1, is that even possible?
I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

It's all fine, but I want to (easily & quickly!) restrict & control when some laptops can access the internet while allowing free access to the server. (For instance, so children's internet access can be monitored but they can always get to photos & backups, etc. on the server.)
