I have a Samsung Vista Home laptop that has connected to the internet without problem for over 2 years. It cannot connect now, either wirelessly or wired, but two other computers running XP can connect both wired and wireless. The connection shows as 'local access only'. I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6
We have four computers One desktop and three notebooks. The desktop and two notebooks use XP Home Service Pack 3, the other notebook is two weeks old and has Vista Home Basic installed SP1. The desktop has a NIC and is connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router connected to a Speed Stream 4100 DSL modem.
All three XP machines have no networking problems - only the Acer Aspire 5515 with Vista Home basic which has an Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter. The problems are 1)does not connect to the internet [local only], on powering up and 2)coming out of sleep mode or 3)drops the internet connection randomly.
I tried unchecking the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology choices. OK, restart. Also tried CMD prompt: netsh Winsock reset. Neither of those seemed to solve the problem and the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology check boxes are checked and back as they were.
I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative.We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista.The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
I installed Vista Business on a new computer (Asus P2) and it keeps loosing the internet connection intermittently. Local access always works. In the network are 3 computers, 2 Vista desktops, 1 XP Home which acts as a file and printer server and a Draytek router behind a cable modem. The 2 Vista PC's are new and both have the same problem. When the XP machine was the desktop PC this problem never occurred, and it still doesn't as the XP machine always has a live internet connection (the cable provider is wonderfully reliable). The machines are connected via a wired 100Mbps network...............
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.
I am running vista on a hp laptop. I can connect to the local network, but can't connect to the login website. I have tried several fixes including disableing ipv6. I feel the issue is when Im attempting to connect to this wifii public unsecure network Im unable to receive the redirect to the terms of use page. in the network sharing center it shows me conected to the local network but not to the internet.

I went to the Library to make sure it just wasnt the certian connection at the apartment messed up but it would say connect there but not acces the internet, im not sure whats wrong the laptop is new and this is the first time it has happend.Even thought the strength is good and it says "connected" when i go to Network Sharing Center theres an X on the internet. I tried to "diagnose and repair" several times but it still didn't work
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).

I know very little about computers and so struggle to follow much of the advice on these forums! I'm trying to connect using an ethernet connection so it's not a problem with the wireless. View 5 Replies View RelatedVista Home Premium SP1 - trying to connect Brother HL-2142 laser printer as a _local_ printer with USB cable connection. I have installed exactly as instructed in printer manual. When I go to print, file appears in print queue until it finally errors. When I look in Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus Controllers->USB Root Hub properties->Power tab, the description shows "Unknown USB Device". Not sure if this is what the problem is. If it is, why would the USB Device be unknown? Also in Device Manager->Other devices, I see the HL-2140 printer with a yellow key hole. Printer manual says using drivers and so on for HL-2140 is fine for the HL-2142. When I try to add the printer manually, I can't work out which is the USB port. Doesn't seem to be one. I've attached document with screen shot of existing ports to choose from....

I hover my mouse over the little internet connection icon in the botom right hand corner and it says local access only. Has anyone else had this roblem? Is more information required (more than likely) jsut let me know. This is jsut another reason to have vista.

I use 3 mobile broadband and this worked fine until i upgraded the hardware to a faster version. When i did this i could not connect to the internet on my 2nd laptop. I was getting the message "local access only". My other laptop still worked fine on the new dongle so I could live without my 2nd laptop on my home internet as i primarily use this one for college anyway. However, i then decided to get a mobile broadband router. When i connect this up i can detect the network on both laptops and connect to it but i am now getting the message "local access only" on both computers.
I have spent literally hours of my life on the phone running through every kind of test with my isp and still have gotten nowhere. They cannot identify the problem and are telling me that there actually isn't one and can't understand why its not working!
i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

But now, I wake up and get ready to do some work on it, and the damn thing is local access only. I skyped with my dad last night, so I know it was working perfect before I went to bed. However, I believe I left it on so It might have updated something I am unaware of. I did a system restore back to 3 days ago. I have another laptop, a toshiba, and it can connect fine. I have hard reset my router (which usually fixes the connection problems). And I have also restarted the laptop, disabled and reenabled the wireless network connection, turned off and on the wlan switch on front. On my router their is no security set. Its just boot up and go. I sure also add that the Sony is Vista Home Premium 64bit, while the toshiba is Widows Vista Home Basic 32bit.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:
Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.
I am working on a toshiba satalite for someone but can not get internet access at my home. I have it plugged directly into the comcast modem but get the "local access only" message that seems to be such a problem for wireless users. When doing ipconfig /renew I get a message stating that windows could not contact the dhcp server. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the modem as it works fine with XP and Linux machines. Everything I have found related is talking about wireless issues and I've tried the registry edit provided by MS for setting the dhcp flag value to 1 and also disabled IPv6 and power options in the adapter configuration.

I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?

I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a local Intranet (a local website, not file share system) and I am using IIS 7 because this is a very advanced asp.net website. I have got it working on my machine, but I cannot get it to work on any other machine connected to my network. They can all access my file share and normal network, but cannot use the IIS localhost.
I have read about changing the Hosts file, but when I try to ping localhost, I do not get a valid IP to enter in the Hosts file. I am obviously doing something wrong. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?

Find out more about Localhost. There is a very good article here: localhost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This will explain about the default Localhost IP. For IPv4 it is 127.0.0.1 and for IPv6 it is ::1. Pinging the LocalHost usually gives you the IPv6 ::1 IP address. You may type 127.0.0.1 into your browser, however aliased websites in other locations will NOT work. Set your computer with the IIS website on it to static IP. Type in to your browser (on any computer on your network) your now static IP, and you CAN put a forwardslash and your aliased website in other locations. I think you can now add this to the Hosts file to make a nice alias on any computer. I will probably write a tutorial on this when I get around to it.
I have a home (workgroup, not domain) network with a bunch of Vista SP1 PCs and one XP SP3 PC. Before I upgraded Vista SP1 PCs to SP2, all PCs could see and share files among each other. After I upgraded two of the Vista PCs to Vista SP2, the XP PC cannot see their shared folders. The Vista SP2 PCs show up in the list, but when I try to see the shared folders I get an error message "\XP2PC is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I've rebooted everything including the router. All the Vista PCs, whether SP1 or SP2, can see each other's shares. The problem is only with the XP PC -- it appears that SP2 broke something.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to access the public folder from another computer on my local network. After failing I started diagnosis at the local machine. I have UAC turned off and have shared the public folder (c:userspublic) with full control, change and read for everyone in share and Full control for everyone in the security tab. I can access the folder in windows explorer. If I select start network, machine name, public, I get a message that \machinenamepublic is not accessible. Network and sharing center show the following:
Network Discovery on
File Sharing on
Public floder sharing on (password required)
Printer sharing off
Password Protected Sharing on
Media sharing off
If I click on the link to show me all the files and folders that I am sharing nothing is displayed.
This is all local, not via the network.
I have been doing this for years in XP and Server 2003, but recently I have been installing Vista x64 Edition for some specific needs. This code is part of a workstation startup script that pulls the description from AD and makes it the local description on the computer. This does not work in Vista x64 or Server 2008 x64 and I have found no explanation on the Internet as of yet. About a week ago I stared having a issue that my browsers would stop working(both firefox and internet explorer)I would get the typical error saying the connection has been reset.My modem was showing that I am connected tho.
At the same time my AIM messenger was working fine I was still connected and able to send and receive messages.I tried to reset my modem that didn't work.So I restarted my pc and that seemed to fix it.
This has continued to happen daily now usually around the same timeframe too.
I have scanned my pc with avast,super anti spyware and malwarebytes and they haven't found anything wrong.I tried disabling my firewal (pc tools firewalls plus) that didn't work.I read that zonealarm could cause this issue and i had it in the past but it's been long uninstalled.
The last thing i tried was i disabled avast web scanner and i reset the TCP/IP Winsock. And again it didn't work.
It's the Internet, LAN and wireless. Problem is that after a time period X they just all want to go to "local only mode". Just to mention, I have three Vista laptops, which all are doing the same thing, and my only XP laptop works just fine. So it's pretty much narrowed down to Vista laptops...No matter what Microsoft wants to say.
So what happens? -> I have a private network (wireless is encrypted with WPA/PSK and the password is correct...), it connects allright and the mode is "Local and Internet". After some time, it can be two minutes or one hour, it just suddenly goes to "local only mode" and stays that way.........
Is there a program that can throttle local internet connections (local as in your own computer) that works on, or more preferably, optimized for vista x64? I already looked into netlimiter, I was wondering if there is anything else that I missed that you guys are using.

I am the Administrator and I have no other users. All the files downloaded go to the Local temp file since I don't have permission.
