PC Can Access Shared Folders But Can't Connect To Local LAN Servers

May 16, 2008

I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative. We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista. The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!

I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!

Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.

PC Can't Access It's Own Shared Folders.

Apr 14, 2008

I am trying to organize the File and Printer Sharing on my home network, but I have one stubborn Vista PC (PC1) that can't access any of the network shared folders, or even it's own.

From PC1:
- Double-clicking on the PC1 icon in Network displays a "\PC1 is not accessible" error
- Typing \PC1 (or 192.168.x.x) into IE or Run gives the same error
- Clicking on "show me all the shared network folders on this computer" does nothing the point turns into circle for a few seconds but then nothing happens.

PC1 is running Vista Home edition
- Network Discovery is ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- All computers are in the same WORKGROUP
- Password access is OFF
- Windows Firewall only (no Third Party Firewalls).

Cannot Access Shared Folders

May 28, 2008

We have a network domain, all XP pro compters, though the domain controller is NT. I have successfully joined this vista pc, and can 'see' all of the computers and servers on the domain, BUT cannot access any of the shared folders. Can't map to them which is what we usually do, can't browse to them, it asks for a username and password but will not authenticate using good credentials, actually will not even authenticate using the server credentials. I have exhaustively checked the network settings but do not know where else to look.

How To Access The Shared Files/folders

Mar 21, 2009

I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop and Vista x64 Home Premium on my wireless laptop. I’m trying to share files and folders. I believe I’ve done everything I needed to enable file sharing on both computers. All my Sharing and Discovery buttons are turned on except Password Protect Sharing. I added “Everyone” to my sharing list on both computers. Both computers have the same Workgroup name.

I don’t know how to access the shared files/folders from either computer. All the web sites I’ve visited tell me how to enable sharing but none of them tell me how to access them. It’s probably a simple process but I can’t figure it out.

Vista & XP Networking; Access Shared Folders Between The Two Computers

Mar 23, 2008

I have a desktop with XP and a laptop I recently purchased with Vista on it. I have been trying to access shared folders between the two computers and have found it impossible access each other. Here are some things you should know:

- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.

- Network is set to Private

- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"

- Both computers can ping eachother

- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.

- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work

- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

- Tried enabled NetBIOS on all computers as suggested by a forum post I read

Local Access Only, No Longer Connect To Internet

Dec 27, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.

1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6

Local Access Only: Connect To The Wireless Router (Linksys WRT110) Via Ethernet Cable

Mar 23, 2010

I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.

-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.

Local Only Network, Cannot Ping The DNS Servers

Jul 29, 2009

I really don't like Vista and have had nothing but trouble getting it connected. I tried connecting it wirelessly to my AirPort wireless and it would connect and could see everything on the network including the gateway, but would go no further.

I then tried a wired connection using all the same numbers (except the last one) that I have on my other desktops at home (3 XPs and 1 2000). Again, it sees the local network fine but will not go out the gateway. Cannot ping the DNS servers. I know it isn't the wire. I plug it directly back in my computer and it works fine. The route print looks fine (except for all the On-links under the Gateway). I tried uninstalling the Norton Internet Security to see if that was a problem and making sure the Microsoft Firewall was off. Still can't get out of the local network. I never had this kind of problem with my XPs.

XP Network: Shows No Folders Shared?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm trying to get my network to function with my Vista x64 laptop. The network has 4 computers total: 3 XP machines, and the Vista Laptop. The three XP machines don't have any issues sharing files. However, I cannot view any XP computers at all on the Vista machine, and I cannot see any of the Vista Shared Folders from my Xp desktop. (I can see the Vista machine on the XP one, but expanding it shows no folders shared.

Rt-click -> explore results in an error: "\Studio72 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.") I am only able to run ipconfig, net config and browstat info on my XP desktop and my Vista Laptop, as the other two machines are my roommate's desktop, and our little security computer (it just records a webcam set on our front door when we're not home in case someone breaks in)..............

LOCAL FOLDERS NOT UPDATING

May 6, 2008

I recently bought a new Vista computer.

I had a Windows 98 computer previously.

I copied the "dbx" files from Outlook Express 5 into a temporary folder on the new machine.

I imported them into Windows Mail (correcting the path error in the import wizard).

Windows Mail crashed, and when I reloaded Windows Mail all of the local folders had vanished except for the Inbox, which was inaccessible. After restarting it again a few times, nothing changed.

Eventually I went to the folder store in AppData, and deleted all the files in the Windows Mail folder, assuming them to be corrupted in some way.

When I restarted Windows Mail, it recovered and recreated the Local Folders structure for me again.

Back to square one.

I tried importing the "dbx" files again, and this seemed to work, appearing under "Imported Folders".

All seemed well, but now for the problem.

If I want to create a folder, or delete a folder, or move a folder, the change does not show up live in the folders list in the left pane.

However, if I click on local folders, the change shows up in the right pane, which lists the local folders tree in expanded form.

To repeat, Windows Mail seems to make the change to the folder structure, but does not update the live folders list in the left hand pane.

However, if I restart windows mail after creating, deleting or moving, the change is visible in the left hand pane.

Recover Local Folders

Nov 10, 2008

I don't know what the Folder or File names are for my Local Folders in Vista Mail.

My old HD began making noises so I bought a new 750KB FireAgent last week,

(ST307504FPA1E3-RK), and Backed it up immediately, before Dell replaced it.

I had my HD set with 4 partitions and Backed them up individually: C-OS & important

programs, D-Vista's Recovery, E-non-critical programs , F-Data.

There were other problems in the C: OS drive so I could not just restore it as I had to use the Dell reinstallation CD.

I have restored most folders and files, BUT my Vista Mail "Local Folders" with all the subfolders and messages did not restore. If I look in I:/backup/CarlP,

I can see C, D, E, F. But, I don't know what I'm looking for, don't know what they would be called, where they are, and how to get them back. It's imperative that I DO restore the information stored in the messages.

Does Not Connect To The Internet [local Only]

Mar 18, 2009

We have four computers One desktop and three notebooks. The desktop and two notebooks use XP Home Service Pack 3, the other notebook is two weeks old and has Vista Home Basic installed SP1. The desktop has a NIC and is connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router connected to a Speed Stream 4100 DSL modem.

All three XP machines have no networking problems - only the Acer Aspire 5515 with Vista Home basic which has an Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter. The problems are 1)does not connect to the internet [local only], on powering up and 2)coming out of sleep mode or 3)drops the internet connection randomly.

I tried unchecking the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology choices. OK, restart. Also tried CMD prompt: netsh Winsock reset. Neither of those seemed to solve the problem and the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology check boxes are checked and back as they were.

When I look in Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus Controllers->USB Root Hub properties->Power tab, the description shows "Unknown USB Device". Not sure if this is what the problem is. Servers And/or Interpreters: Obtain A Comprehensive Listing Of Servers And Interpreters That Are A Normal Part Of The Windows Vista Operating System?

Apr 26, 2009

Is it possible to obtain a comprehensive listing of servers and interpreters that are a normal part of the Windows Vista Operating System? These are the only kinds of programs I expect the Security updates to be fixing.

Servers = Programs included with the OS which accepts commands from the Internet or LAN external to My Computer. Interpreters = Programs which will execute any kind of source code whatsoever like HyperTextMarkUpLanguage HTML or Basic or C+ or Fortran or whatever.

I know of no other kinds of programs unless you can tell me now that may work ndependent of User Control. If I could ID these rouge programs running in the background it would be better than the security updates themselves.
