Access The Shared Folder Across The Network
Mar 23, 2008ONly 24 hrs into using Vista. I have added my Vista PC to my Home Network. I am trying to access the shared folder on my old PC that is showing on the network but I am denied access. I did have a password/user account set up on the old machine but have removed the password now. How can I access the shared folder across the network?

Dec 24, 2008Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

Mar 23, 2008using the laptop through wireless I can see other computer and even list their shared folders but when I try to actually list files the connection timesout and gives an error os dennied access to the shared folder. If I try to use VNC for instance, the client connects, asks for pass and then after the remote screen starts to appear.. it hangs... no response after that . The strange part of the problem is that if I connect the laptop through a wired connection everything works ok I access shared folders, I print remotely, no problems. I tried a number of things , the most obvious, like firewalls diferent settings on the network etc. What I can't figure out is what can be so different in the PC for the wired to work but not the wireless.

Apr 14, 2008I am trying to organize the File and Printer Sharing on my home network, but I have one stubborn Vista PC (PC1) that can't access any of the network shared folders, or even it's own.
From PC1:
- Double-clicking on the PC1 icon in Network displays a "\PC1 is not accessible" error
- Typing \PC1 (or 192.168.x.x) into IE or Run gives the same error
- Clicking on "show me all the shared network folders on this computer" does nothing the point turns into circle for a few seconds but then nothing happens.
PC1 is running Vista Home edition
- Network Discovery is ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- All computers are in the same WORKGROUP
- Password access is OFF
- Windows Firewall only (no Third Party Firewalls).
All Drives Shared, Cannot Access 1
Dec 15, 2008I have multiple drives on my Vista machine, some are partitions. One drive it will not let me access thru the network, from an XP box, and another Vista box. All shared settings are the same on all the drives. I cant figure out how to access this 1 important drive from my network!

May 28, 2008We have a network domain, all XP pro compters, though the domain controller is NT. I have successfully joined this vista pc, and can 'see' all of the computers and servers on the domain, BUT cannot access any of the shared folders. Can't map to them which is what we usually do, can't browse to them, it asks for a username and password but will not authenticate using good credentials, actually will not even authenticate using the server credentials. I have exhaustively checked the network settings but do not know where else to look.

Mar 21, 2009I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop and Vista x64 Home Premium on my wireless laptop. I’m trying to share files and folders. I believe I’ve done everything I needed to enable file sharing on both computers. All my Sharing and Discovery buttons are turned on except Password Protect Sharing. I added “Everyone” to my sharing list on both computers. Both computers have the same Workgroup name.
I don’t know how to access the shared files/folders from either computer. All the web sites I’ve visited tell me how to enable sharing but none of them tell me how to access them. It’s probably a simple process but I can’t figure it out.
Cannot Access The Shared Files On My XP Computer.
May 8, 2008After months of diddling in an effort to access shared files on my XP computer from my Vista computer I was finally able to access the files using Windows Explorer after the final reboot after installing SP1. My glee was short lived however because after turning my Vista computer off and then on again I still cannot access the shared files on my XP computer. I can see the XP computer in "Network and Sharing Center" > "View Full Map", but I can't view the shared files by double clicking on the XP computer icon.
Network discovery - on
File sharing - on
Public folder sharing - on
Printer sharing - on
Workgroup is WORKGROUP on both computers I am able to access a shared printer on the XP computer I am able to access the shared files on my XP computer by using Internet Explorer and entering \Computername in the address bar. I am able to access a NAS drive on my network using Windows Explorer.

I do not use passwords and have not set any hour restrictions, therefore, only thing remaining is policy restriction.

Mar 23, 2008I have a desktop with XP and a laptop I recently purchased with Vista on it. I have been trying to access shared folders between the two computers and have found it impossible access each other. Here are some things you should know:
- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.
- Network is set to Private
- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"
- Both computers can ping eachother
- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.
- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work
- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website

May 16, 2008I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative.We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista.The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
Way For Shared Drives Connected To All Access To ALL Subfolders And Files?

I was able to get my XBOX setup to stream from the desktop PC, and I was able to get print sharing setup from the desktop PC. However, I'm having problems sharing folders from the desktop PC to the laptop. On my laptop I have the following share: HomePCPublic: HomePC is the name of my desktop PC. When I initially setup the shared folder it works great. From the laptop I can connect to the desktop PC public folder no problem. Mar 18, 2009My computer is a Dell XPS 420, Vista Home Premium, my account has administrator privileges. My wife's computer is a Dell Dimension E520, Vista Ultimate, her account has admin privileges. We run OneCare Live for all security and backup needs. I installed a network backup using a Linksys NLSU2 and, up till yesterday had a 320 GB TrekStor HD as the backup device. I disconnected the TrekStor and now have a LaCie 1TB HD. Prior to connecting it to the NLSU2 I connected the new HD to my computer and ran the setup. Formatted the drive to NTFS. I connected it to the network and ran a OneCare backup from my computer. Worked just fine. This morning I tried a backup from my wife's computer and it fails (asking for a log on). On my computer I can navigate to the drive, to the HD and to the folders and subfolders. On her computer I can do the same. However when I look at the Properties for the shared network folder on the HD there are 3 accounts : Everyone; everyone (LKG..everyone); and guest (LKG...guest) (LKG... is the prefix for the NLSU2).

Jun 6, 2008I have a problem trying to Map an XP drive on my Vista Home Basic Laptop that is proving a nightmare: We have several computers on our netwrok, including the XP server itself where we have our shared documents. (place where all shared files go that we want other users to see) I have mapped the same shared docs folder accross all of out XP machines. Plugged my Vista Home Basic Laptop into our network, couldnt map the shared docs folder on my server. After reading many how to's, i followed this guide: Microsoft Corporation I have downloaded and installed the LLTD responder on the server with XP All computers were restarted, now when looking on the laptops "Veiw full map" I can see FILE_STORAGE (our server) but the guide above says right click on the computer running XP, however when I do this nothing happens, it is a solid icon and clicking it does nothing.
All computers including the laptop are on the same workgroup The laptop has appeared when looking on the XP machine under viewing the network I have opened ports UDP: 137, 138, 1900 and TCP 21, 139, 445 2869 We have AVG Antivirus and Firewall on all machines including the laptop. AVG does not allow you to open ports, so the above ports were opened on my router. When I plugged the laptop into the network AVG asked me to select a profile, I selected ALLOW ALL for the time being as "Computer In Domain" was not there to select. The vista laptop has Network Disc. ON, File Sharing ON, Public Folder Sharing ON and Printer Sharing ON One thing I couldnt get my head round was the differance between Workgroup and Network. The workgroup is the same on all computers, but I wasnt aware that I had ever given a "Network" name on any of the XP machine. Vista did ask for a "Network" name. For safety i put the same name as is in the workgroup. Anyone any ideas, im desperate?

Jun 30, 2008I really don't know if the problem is with Verizon, Vista, MS, or something else, but hopefully someone has seen it: Friday, everything was fine. Monday afternoon, big problem. The only major difference was the Vista Service Pack 1 I ran this morning, so maybe that's it. I run the service pack on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (takes an hour or so). The next time I try to use the Verizon Versalink Gateway, it does connect my laptop to my Dell desktop (running XP), and I click on "access shared files". I open the C: directory on my desktop, and in a few seconds the status bar reads "179 items (Disk free space: 91.7 GB)." The problem is that a file showed up about every 15-30 seconds - for 179 files, it took 30 minutes until all files were visible in the panel on the right.
It "sees" that there are 179 files in the directory immediately, but the the dark gray bar CREEPS across the top of the screen, taking forever. If I want a file that starts with "w", I'd be waiting a half an hour for it. I'd be faster driving somewhere and getting two 5.25" floppy drives and installing one on each computer.

Mar 26, 2008I can't get access to certain folders, everything was fine until my HD went KaPuT, so I installed a new dual 160GB raid system so I won't lose it all again, the only problem is now that I reloaded Vista Ultimate I can't access anything, I have turned UAC off, and gave permissions, and turned over ownership of everything to me, there is nobody else listed as a user in my system, yet when I use my AutoCad LT 2008 and try to access files, when I click on the directory I need to get into, it does nothing, I can get into other ones, but not any of the ones with little tiny curved arrows in boxes on the lower left. I have access of them in explorer, but not through LT 2008

Mar 23, 2008I'm using Vista Enterprise. The Music folder under c:useruser namedocuments is missing. It was there at one time. The shortcut to the music folder is available but it does not access the Music folder. If I right click on Music from Start my options are copy, rename, properties. Selecting properties brings up a general tab that is completely blank. I created a folder called Music but when I install iTunes it says it cannot find the Music folder to add an i Tunes folder. Which is how I discovered the Music folder was missing. Even with the i Tunes folder in Music that I created the Music General tab is still completely blank. How do I fix this? I'd like to continue to use iTunes.

The process stops there. Subsequent folders are not backed up. The ownership for that folder looks suspect: nobody (Unix User obody)
Other folders that work have owner as: administrator (EXTERNALDRIVEadmin) I can not change the offending folder's owner. I have tried the following as administrator: Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:BackUp- MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew RMDIR /S S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew I get access denied. I can access the directory so my path must be correct: dir S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew How can I change ownership or delete the offending folder?
