XP Network - Couldnt Map The Shared Documents Folder On Server
Jun 6, 2008
I have a problem trying to Map an XP drive on my Vista Home Basic Laptop that is proving a nightmare: We have several computers on our netwrok, including the XP server itself where we have our shared documents. (place where all shared files go that we want other users to see) I have mapped the same shared docs folder accross all of out XP machines. Plugged my Vista Home Basic Laptop into our network, couldnt map the shared docs folder on my server. After reading many how to's, i followed this guide: Microsoft Corporation I have downloaded and installed the LLTD responder on the server with XP All computers were restarted, now when looking on the laptops "Veiw full map" I can see FILE_STORAGE (our server) but the guide above says right click on the computer running XP, however when I do this nothing happens, it is a solid icon and clicking it does nothing.
All computers including the laptop are on the same workgroup The laptop has appeared when looking on the XP machine under viewing the network I have opened ports UDP: 137, 138, 1900 and TCP 21, 139, 445 2869 We have AVG Antivirus and Firewall on all machines including the laptop. AVG does not allow you to open ports, so the above ports were opened on my router. When I plugged the laptop into the network AVG asked me to select a profile, I selected ALLOW ALL for the time being as "Computer In Domain" was not there to select. The vista laptop has Network Disc. ON, File Sharing ON, Public Folder Sharing ON and Printer Sharing ON One thing I couldnt get my head round was the differance between Workgroup and Network. The workgroup is the same on all computers, but I wasnt aware that I had ever given a "Network" name on any of the XP machine. Vista did ask for a "Network" name. For safety i put the same name as is in the workgroup. Anyone any ideas, im desperate?

My computer is a Dell XPS 420, Vista Home Premium, my account has administrator privileges. My wife's computer is a Dell Dimension E520, Vista Ultimate, her account has admin privileges. We run OneCare Live for all security and backup needs. I installed a network backup using a Linksys NLSU2 and, up till yesterday had a 320 GB TrekStor HD as the backup device. I disconnected the TrekStor and now have a LaCie 1TB HD. Prior to connecting it to the NLSU2 I connected the new HD to my computer and ran the setup. Formatted the drive to NTFS. I connected it to the network and ran a OneCare backup from my computer. Worked just fine. This morning I tried a backup from my wife's computer and it fails (asking for a log on). On my computer I can navigate to the drive, to the HD and to the folders and subfolders. On her computer I can do the same. However when I look at the Properties for the shared network folder on the HD there are 3 accounts : Everyone; everyone (LKG..everyone); and guest (LKG...guest) (LKG... is the prefix for the NLSU2).

Background before the question: I work for an architecture firm and are the test subjects to upgrading because we are the graphics department with all the programs that hog memory and have all the 64-bit programs... Adobe Photoshop CS4, 3DS Max 2009 and Revit 2008. I recently upgraded my machine to Vista Business x64 and all my co-workers except for one other (who also upgraded with me to Vista Business x64) are all on XP x86 machines.
we have problems with the network printers that are shared on a server machine. Issue is, everyone can print all day til we print out something. (Yes, are machine recognize the printers... it is not a I can't see them or are they shared on the server). After it stops everyone, we can keep on printing ourselves. The only way to fix it is to reset the server machine to recognize the printer again. Is there any local fix from the take over from happening... or is it on the server machine? Actually, what is the fix? Currently are work around is to jump on a computer that hasn't been used by anyone for years (XP x86) to print.

This has happened to me before - somehow the folder formats change themselves, eg the documents folder has options along the top like 'organise' 'view''slideshow' and 'burn' ie like in the pictures folder. I found the answer once before in one of the forums, but can't remember where it was. And why does this happen? Also, when I go to 'Help & support" in the Start button, it defaults to Lenovo (my hardware mfg) instead of Microsoft Windows.

I use Vista Home Premium. I have a network that connects one computer by cable and 3 computer by wireless. I also have a LaserJet 4 Plus. It has an adapter card that is connected to the router/modem by cable. I have gone thru the 'Add Printer' procedure several times. It 'finds' a TCP/IP 'generic adapter card and, after awhile, a list of printers is displayed. I select mine. Give it a shared name and click on 'print test page.' Nothing happens. I used to have a Netgear modem but switch to AT&T wireless router. I am unable to find a list of attached devices and their IP address.

Network fully operational - Public Folder on Vista can be shared on XP - no problem BUT when I attempt to share another folder on Vista it requests username. Options include username on Vista, Guest, Everyone or Add name. It appears that Vista cannot see usernames on XP. Do I have to add these usernames to the Vista computer? I think the 'everyone' option applies only to 'Domains' which are not recognised on XP.

how i can get this darn EZStickyNotes folder to stop returning t oMyDocuments folder every month after i delete it!Also,i found last month an EZListings.BSA that may or may not be related in c:/administrator/appdata/local/temp. This is getting old and i want to know how to get rid of these items permanently. I understand from barman58 in a seperate thread from awhile back, EZStickyNotes folder appears out of nowhere in Documents folder! that the ezstickynotes folder has something to do with a shareware program he gave a link to. How it got there is a mystery to me since i didn't install it, but some program installed it,apparently, and didn't leave any way for me to uninstall it if i didn't want it. I searched my computer for the easy sticky note program, but it isn't on my computer. I always do a scan of my computer with avast, malwarebytes, superantispyware, and windows defender after finding the ezstickynotes folder for viruses, etc and it always comes up clean.

The contents of My documents folder is displayed in my computer folder, some icons are double and a whole lot of other white icons "empy" files, see screenshot 1. Screenshot 2:
- Right clicking, double clicking on the white files does nothing
- Cannot select them and delete
- Opening a folder takes me to that folder (If i open "Pictures" it takes me to C:UsersNotandiPictures)
- Deleting a folder there deletes it from My Documents too
EDIT: These direcotries are also displayed in the SEND TO: menu, exactly the same as in my computer, but no the empty white files. See screenshot 2

I get following error message when at XP and trying to see a shared folder on Vista: "HPdesktop not available. You might not have permission." "Logon failure: user account restrictions. Possible reasons are passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions or a policy restriction has been enforced." I do not use passwords and have not set any hour restrictions, therefore, only thing remaining is policy restriction.

I have two computers, Vista Home Premium SP2 and XP SP2. Both belong to the same workgroup. Tonight I could see the XP computer from Vista. Then I rebooted the Vista computer and I can no longer see the XP computer's shared files. They are both connected via a linksys wireless router. I have Norton on both; both have the windows firewall turned off.

I can go online to bing.com and several other websites. But I can not download java or flash updates, it says I do not any an internet connection. I also can not download any new Microsoft updates. If I install IE8, then the browser can no longer go online. AVG is the only ant-virus installed, and the firewalls are turned off. The machine can not be formated and reinstalled

I'm trying to get my network to function with my Vista x64 laptop. The network has 4 computers total: 3 XP machines, and the Vista Laptop. The three XP machines don't have any issues sharing files. However, I cannot view any XP computers at all on the Vista machine, and I cannot see any of the Vista Shared Folders from my Xp desktop. (I can see the Vista machine on the XP one, but expanding it shows no folders shared.
Rt-click -> explore results in an error: "\Studio72 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.") I am only able to run ipconfig, net config and browstat info on my XP desktop and my Vista Laptop, as the other two machines are my roommate's desktop, and our little security computer (it just records a webcam set on our front door when we're not home in case someone breaks in)..............

Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

i tried REcuva, some file recovery program and i found SOME of my old files but the majority are still missing. i also tried a system restore. it failed as well. i downloaded a ebook before i read somewhere NOT to download anything for it could overwrite where my files are/were. right now for some reason i have 4 documents folders. i didnt create any of them. they just keep appearing

Since a few days I'm having a weird problem with Vista. Whenever I try to open my documents folder through the start menu (or anywhere else for that matter) the window closes. Also, some links in the start menu seem to be broken. I can go to the documents folder through browsing c:/users/my name but not directly if you know what I mean. This is quite annoying since I can no longer use 'save' in most of the programs I use (photoshop, premiere). When I choose 'save' it is targeted towards going to the documents folder first but it fails and the window closes again.

As there was a update on my widows update i finished my work and set it to update itself and i moved on to hand written work. As i use my laptop every day at "school" i have nearly a whole year of work saved on my laptop for my A levels. I saved all my work in a folder in my documents which i find now to be gone. I have tried using tune up utiliys "undelete" and "disc explorer" to find it yet it not there. One of the updates was for my office 2007 "sevice pack 1".

When I used XP I kept the My Documents file on my D: drive. Apart from anything else this made backing-up a cinch. After upgrading to Vista, I played around and managed to get the D: drive to appear on my start menu. It also appears under my Username folder on the start menu. However, it is grey rather than green and in both places is is called DATA (D rather than documents (or possibly Documents).
My Music and Pictures folders are stored as sub-folders in this drive/folder in the right place, but the other default folders such as Links, Saved Games, Searches, Downloads and Favourites are not, for some reason they still sit on the C: drive. My Videos folder is on my E: drive where I would like to keep it.
Ideally I'd like all these folders to sit on D: with a green Documents folder and all the sub-folders (except Videos). I've seen plenty of online tips about moving folders, sometimes they involve tinkering with the registry, but not much about fixing wrongly configured folders. This isn't just petty nonsense, I really need everything in one place so I can organise simple and reliable back-ups
