Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

View 9 Replies View Relatedusing the laptop through wireless I can see other computer and even list their shared folders but when I try to actually list files the connection timesout and gives an error os dennied access to the shared folder. If I try to use VNC for instance, the client connects, asks for pass and then after the remote screen starts to appear.. it hangs... no response after that . The strange part of the problem is that if I connect the laptop through a wired connection everything works ok I access shared folders, I print remotely, no problems. I tried a number of things , the most obvious, like firewalls diferent settings on the network etc. What I can't figure out is what can be so different in the PC for the wired to work but not the wireless.

It all of a sudden appeared the other day. I have used "manage accounts" to try and delete it but it does not appear on there. the os I am using is vista home basic 32bit.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to organize the File and Printer Sharing on my home network, but I have one stubborn Vista PC (PC1) that can't access any of the network shared folders, or even it's own.
From PC1:
- Double-clicking on the PC1 icon in Network displays a "\PC1 is not accessible" error
- Typing \PC1 (or 192.168.x.x) into IE or Run gives the same error
- Clicking on "show me all the shared network folders on this computer" does nothing the point turns into circle for a few seconds but then nothing happens.
PC1 is running Vista Home edition
- Network Discovery is ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- All computers are in the same WORKGROUP
- Password access is OFF
- Windows Firewall only (no Third Party Firewalls).
I have multiple drives on my Vista machine, some are partitions. One drive it will not let me access thru the network, from an XP box, and another Vista box. All shared settings are the same on all the drives. I cant figure out how to access this 1 important drive from my network!

I have successfully joined this vista pc, and can 'see' all of the computers and servers on the domain, BUT cannot access any of the shared folders. Can't map to them which is what we usually do, can't browse to them, it asks for a username and password but will not authenticate using good credentials, actually will not even authenticate using the server credentials. I have exhaustively checked the network settings but do not know where else to look.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop and Vista x64 Home Premium on my wireless laptop. I’m trying to share files and folders. I believe I’ve done everything I needed to enable file sharing on both computers. All my Sharing and Discovery buttons are turned on except Password Protect Sharing. I added “Everyone” to my sharing list on both computers. Both computers have the same Workgroup name.
I don’t know how to access the shared files/folders from either computer. All the web sites I’ve visited tell me how to enable sharing but none of them tell me how to access them. It’s probably a simple process but I can’t figure it out.
After months of diddling in an effort to access shared files on my XP computer from my Vista computer I was finally able to access the files using Windows Explorer after the final reboot after installing SP1. My glee was short lived however because after turning my Vista computer off and then on again I still cannot access the shared files on my XP computer. I can see the XP computer in "Network and Sharing Center" > "View Full Map", but I can't view the shared files by double clicking on the XP computer icon.

Workgroup is WORKGROUP on both computers I am able to access a shared printer on the XP computer I am able to access the shared files on my XP computer by using Internet Explorer and entering \Computername in the address bar. I am able to access a NAS drive on my network using Windows Explorer.
I am running Windows Vista on my laptop and Windows XP on my home computer to which the shared printers are connected. When attempting to connect to shared printer from my laptop, I get the following error "Windows cannot connect. Access is denied" What am I doing wrong?

"Logon failure: user account restrictions. Possible reasons are passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions or a policy restriction has been enforced." I do not use passwords and have not set any hour restrictions, therefore, only thing remaining is policy restriction.

Then I rebooted the Vista computer and I can no longer see the XP computer's shared files. They are both connected via a linksys wireless router. - Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.
- Network is set to Private
- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"
- Both computers can ping eachother
- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.
- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work
- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website

I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative.We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista.The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
I can share a drive, no problem. No one can actually touch any of the data on that drive unless I specifically share each item one by one. Is there a way to share a drive and automatically have EVERYTHING on that drive be accessible to network users?

I also have a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium that has a wireless connection 802.11g. I was able to get my XBOX setup to stream from the desktop PC, and I was able to get print sharing setup from the desktop PC. However, I'm having problems sharing folders from the desktop PC to the laptop. On my laptop I have the following share: HomePCPublic: HomePC is the name of my desktop PC. When I initially setup the shared folder it works great. From the laptop I can connect to the desktop PC public folder no problem. View 8 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a Dell XPS 420, Vista Home Premium, my account has administrator privileges. My wife's computer is a Dell Dimension E520, Vista Ultimate, her account has admin privileges. We run OneCare Live for all security and backup needs. I installed a network backup using a Linksys NLSU2 and, up till yesterday had a 320 GB TrekStor HD as the backup device. I disconnected the TrekStor and now have a LaCie 1TB HD. Prior to connecting it to the NLSU2 I connected the new HD to my computer and ran the setup. Formatted the drive to NTFS. I connected it to the network and ran a OneCare backup from my computer. Worked just fine. This morning I tried a backup from my wife's computer and it fails (asking for a log on). On my computer I can navigate to the drive, to the HD and to the folders and subfolders. On her computer I can do the same. However when I look at the Properties for the shared network folder on the HD there are 3 accounts : Everyone; everyone (LKG..everyone); and guest (LKG...guest) (LKG... is the prefix for the NLSU2).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem trying to Map an XP drive on my Vista Home Basic Laptop that is proving a nightmare: We have several computers on our netwrok, including the XP server itself where we have our shared documents. (place where all shared files go that we want other users to see) I have mapped the same shared docs folder accross all of out XP machines. Plugged my Vista Home Basic Laptop into our network, couldnt map the shared docs folder on my server. After reading many how to's, i followed this guide: Microsoft Corporation I have downloaded and installed the LLTD responder on the server with XP All computers were restarted, now when looking on the laptops "Veiw full map" I can see FILE_STORAGE (our server) but the guide above says right click on the computer running XP, however when I do this nothing happens, it is a solid icon and clicking it does nothing.
All computers including the laptop are on the same workgroup The laptop has appeared when looking on the XP machine under viewing the network I have opened ports UDP: 137, 138, 1900 and TCP 21, 139, 445 2869 We have AVG Antivirus and Firewall on all machines including the laptop. AVG does not allow you to open ports, so the above ports were opened on my router. When I plugged the laptop into the network AVG asked me to select a profile, I selected ALLOW ALL for the time being as "Computer In Domain" was not there to select. The vista laptop has Network Disc. ON, File Sharing ON, Public Folder Sharing ON and Printer Sharing ON One thing I couldnt get my head round was the differance between Workgroup and Network. The workgroup is the same on all computers, but I wasnt aware that I had ever given a "Network" name on any of the XP machine. Vista did ask for a "Network" name. For safety i put the same name as is in the workgroup. Anyone any ideas, im desperate?
When trying to copy a folder from a memory stick to my external HD it says Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action. No doubt its something similar to my last post, but I can't seem to get around it. Any info would be great. TIA BTW I have 2 memory sticks and only one came up with this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI set up my brand new pc,an Acer Aspire M-1800 today which has windows vista premium.I agreed to terms and conditions,was asked to pick a user name,I did,then I was asked to pick a password I did that.I went to re-enter my password,it said wrong user name or password.My user name is displayed above the box where it says enter my password.I am sure I have the password right,but I assume windows wins this one.The bottom line is I cannot get past this point.Being so new I did not know you were to make a password reset disk,until I clicked on reset password.Can someone help me .Its really embarrsing to have this on the 1st time I tried to use it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI really don't know if the problem is with Verizon, Vista, MS, or something else, but hopefully someone has seen it: Friday, everything was fine. Monday afternoon, big problem. The only major difference was the Vista Service Pack 1 I ran this morning, so maybe that's it. I run the service pack on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (takes an hour or so). The next time I try to use the Verizon Versalink Gateway, it does connect my laptop to my Dell desktop (running XP), and I click on "access shared files". I open the C: directory on my desktop, and in a few seconds the status bar reads "179 items (Disk free space: 91.7 GB)." The problem is that a file showed up about every 15-30 seconds - for 179 files, it took 30 minutes until all files were visible in the panel on the right.
It "sees" that there are 179 files in the directory immediately, but the the dark gray bar CREEPS across the top of the screen, taking forever. If I want a file that starts with "w", I'd be waiting a half an hour for it. I'd be faster driving somewhere and getting two 5.25" floppy drives and installing one on each computer.
Problem:

user account password for the admin is denied.
What happened:
i locked my computer because family members where accesing it during inappropriate times.
administrator password is denied, it has either expired or changed,
i need this account becuase of system changes that need supervised
have tried CMD
and other related links peoplehave suggested.

LAN network created by DSL-Router AVM FritzBox 7270. One LAN client - windows xp pro sp3 One WLAN client - vista business 32bits sp1. USB mass storage connected to router. Router shares the drive using samba server. Win xp has no problems while accessing this drive. Vista can access the drive only if it is not protected by password. What network setting is the vista pc missing ?

When I come to access the data the system tells me I have used an incorrect password. Now I know I have the correct password - something has gone wrong. View 4 Replies View RelatedIm not really much of a computer wizzkid so pardon me if im not making much sense. I went into tools>account>default mail account>servers tab> My problem started then. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.
Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.
