LAN network created by DSL-Router AVM FritzBox 7270. One LAN client - windows xp pro sp3 One WLAN client - vista business 32bits sp1. USB mass storage connected to router. Router shares the drive using samba server. Win xp has no problems while accessing this drive. Vista can access the drive only if it is not protected by password. What network setting is the vista pc missing ?

Do u guys think, this account should be just disactivated and not shown on the welcome screen, or both password protected and disactivated.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am unable to access Vista from an XP computer because apparently Vista is demanding a user name and password to share files. Password protected sharing is clearly turned OFF in the frigging network and sharing box. The computers are in the same workgroup, all sharing permissions have been turned on. SP1 had done nothing to rectify the disaster that is Vista, particularly networking with XP computers, which far outnumber Vista boxes because XP works and Vista doesn't.When you do something as simple as changing the name of the workgroup you have to reboot the computer. How is this any better than Windows 3.x?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a "Lenovo SL500" thinkpad laptop, Running Vista Business 32bit. And a costum built Desktop PC running Vista Ultimate. Both password protected, but with the same password. I would like to transfer files vire the network. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the Reciving computer was not password protected. All I would do is open "Network" located in the start menu and then do the folowing "Network\". To find computers name: open start menu, right click on "computer" and press "properties" But because the reciving computer is password protected I can only see "Printers" I need security so I cannot remove passwords OR open my computer up for file sharing!
The only other options I have got are: Bluetooth: This Ok but is slow and you are needed on both computers for accepting, entering passes etc. (I would preferrer not to!) Server: We have a Server but this means uploading to the server(could take ages), Then Downloading the server(thats double the time). (Again I would preferrer not to!) Memory sticks: Basically a simaller problem to the server! (Once again I would preferrer not to!) So basically what I am asking is: Does anyone know an application/progam that deals with network file sharing (That will do what I am asking for) Or a hidden option in vista to allow this Or something?

When trying to connect wirelessly to the internet through my Netgear router (Comcast); Password protected I can only connect Locally, not internet. When it is not protected I can connect fine. I can connect fine using a wire. But I can't if it's password protected.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am an MCSE and would consider myself pretty savy overall, but this particular problem (which exists in my home network) has me frustrated. I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64. Attached to that PC (via USB) is a HP Photosmart C3180. My wife's laptop is running XP Professional x86. I am trying to allow her to print to the printer attached to my Vista x64 PC.
I install the printer properly and confirm it working on my Vista x64 PC. I then share it out under the name HPC3180. I disable password protected sharing and under the security settings of the printer I give "Anonymous Logon" permission to access the printer. I know generally I would have to specify the x86 version of the driver under the "Additional Drivers" area in the properties of the printer; but in this case I do not know where to get the .INF files. I can download the drivers for the 32 bit version of XP from HP's site, but they aren't self extracting EXE files so I cannot get the INF file out of them to use. I even tried setting it up (on XP x86 laptop) as a "Local Printer" with a "Local Port" that points the printer. I then tried to use a variety of older and generic drivers. At worst it refused to print entirely. At best I got some sort of seemingly random output from the printer.
A few months ago i bought a new HP Pavilion Elite m9530.be desktop computer running Vista Home Premium x64. Almost since the beginning i haven't been able to write to my external hdd wich i used to use on my XP Pro x32 Laptop. On my laptop, I have no problem at all writing and reading to the HDD. It's weird, because sometimes I can write to the HDD on vista x64 and sometimes it says "this disk is write protected..." Please keep in mind i don't want and i can't format the disk because there's to many important files on it and I don't have the space to backup them. Is there a solution without re-formatting the disk. ps. When i bought it, it was formatted as FAT32, on my xp laptop, I changed it to NTFS.

I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines
When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."
I set up my brand new pc,an Acer Aspire M-1800 today which has windows vista premium.I agreed to terms and conditions,was asked to pick a user name,I did,then I was asked to pick a password I did that.I went to re-enter my password,it said wrong user name or password.My user name is displayed above the box where it says enter my password.I am sure I have the password right,but I assume windows wins this one.The bottom line is I cannot get past this point.Being so new I did not know you were to make a password reset disk,until I clicked on reset password.Can someone help me .Its really embarrsing to have this on the 1st time I tried to use it.

I have an Acer laptop which came with Vista Home Premium installed. I set up a password on the Personal Secure Disk (PSD) and put some of my genealogy data in there. When I come to access the data the system tells me I have used an incorrect password. Now I know I have the correct password - something has gone wrong. Are there any clever hacks developed to get into the PSD by evading the password protection?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIm not really much of a computer wizzkid so pardon me if im not making much sense. I went into tools>account>default mail account>servers tab> My problem started then. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.
Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.
Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

I typed in the wrong password a few times and as a result I can no longer access any of my FTP locations. I have turned off Vista's firewall, turned off AVG, checked the router, made a new port 21 rule, and restarted my PC. I simply can't figure out what might have happened and I can't seen to find any solution.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
This seems to be a new development, and I'm stumped. I've got three internal hard drives- one housing Vista Ultimate x64, one housing Ubuntu 8.04 x64, and one being used for storage for both OS's. Up until recently they've cooperated nicely. Now, the storage drive (drive E:) will not let me write to it. I cannot rename, delete, cut, or write any new files to any part of that drive. That's troublesome, since that's where I send all of my downloads to!
Even earlier in this session of windows it was working nicely, I was able to download a torrent of the recent Ubuntu 8.04 release (legal and distributed from ubuntu.com). I started a session of Assassin's Creed (a game), and now that I've quit that, I cannot write to the drive. Specifically, the error is: "The disk is write protected. Remove the write protection or use another disk.".........
I have a 1 TB external hard drive connected to my network. I would like to back up my laptop and setup automatic backup on a weekly basis to this drive like I have done with my desktop. However, the damned thing keeps asking me for a username and password that I did NOT set up on the computer that has the hard drive connected directly into it. When I use my Windows username and password for the computer the drive is connected to, it tells me it is invalid. So what, exactly, is the password if that isn't it? I have password protection turned OFF on my network, so it shouldn't even ask me for one.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an A-Tec HD-227-U2 2.5in Hard Drive enclosure with a Fujitsu hard drive in it from a dead laptop. I want to recover files from the drive to my Vista PC. The device was recognised when I plugged the enclosure in (I am using both USB cables supplied with the enclosure, with no jumpers on the Hard Drive) and automatically installed the drivers. The device is shown in Device Manager as "Disk Drive" and the properties show it is working properly. The device is not shown in Disk management anywhere and is also missing from my computer. Any ideas why I can't access this drive???
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy basic setup is hanging off a Netgear DG834GT, which then connects to a Netgear FS608 (10/100 switch).
On this switch I have my old laptop running XP Media Centre, my spanking new desktop running Vista Ultimat x64 (fully SP1'd) and a Buffalo NAS DH500GL.
All sit within a foot or so of each other and connect via cat5e.
When writing to the NAS from XP, I'm getting write speeds of about 3.7Mb/s.
When writing to the NAS from Vista, I'm getting about 40kbs (yes, 'k' not 'M')
I get a similar 40kbs if writing from Vista to a shared doc area on the XP laptop.
Copying from the NAS to Vista (and XP) I get 3.7Mbs
Internet speed if similar on both for download (about 8Mbs) although I haven't tried upload speeds.
I've tried the auto-tune tweaks as suggested by Shane, and turned off DFS replication as suggested by DMEX.
Also tried plugging both the Vista box and the NAS into the DG834 incase the switch was causing the problem.
None of those helped
NAS firmware is fully up to date, as is Netgear DG834, and obviously the FS608 has no firmware to upgrade anyway.
At the moment I'm stuck with copying a file onto USB on the Vista box, plugging the USB into the laptop and uploading to the NAS from there - which reminds me too much of sneakernet technology .
I have a slave drive that was getting really filled (it was showing red). Now, it has disappeared from the "My Computer" section and I cannot find it. I don't know how to access it to take some things off. I have all of my photos and graphics on there and I'm scared of losing them.

I can access the files on the XP PC from the Vista PC, and I can access the files on the second drive (D: Drive) on the Vista PC from the XP{ PC. BUT I cannot access the files on the C: Drive of the Vista PC from the XP PC. When I look into the properties dialogue box for each drive on the Vista PC I see differences in the security options, where on the D: Drive I get "Everybody" as the Group/user name but for the C: Drive I get "Authenticated users".

This is the command line in the .bat Robocopy C:UsersOwnerMusic ecordings \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordings /S /COPYT /MIR /Log:MusicBkupLog.txt Now, the subsequent backup for my music folders fails on a specific folder with error: ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Deleting Extra File \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordingsAmbroseNewA Fine Romance-Browne.mp3 Access is denied. The process stops there. Subsequent folders are not backed up. The ownership for that folder looks suspect: nobody (Unix User obody)
Other folders that work have owner as: administrator (EXTERNALDRIVEadmin) I can not change the offending folder's owner. I have tried the following as administrator: Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:BackUp- MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew RMDIR /S S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew I get access denied. I can access the directory so my path must be correct: dir S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew How can I change ownership or delete the offending folder?
I'm using HDTune to benchmark my HD which is a Samsung T166 HD501LJ. The Access time used to be 15ms, but now its 16.5ms or so. I don't remember changing anything hard drive related. What could be the cause of this? Edit: Well the hard drive is filled up more now since I've ran the last test (15ms) but it has been defragged. Could this be it? Edit2: ok thats not it. I moved all files to a seperate physical drive and its still the same.
