I was trying to access my FTP through vista explorer, but couldn't remember my password. I typed in the wrong password a few times and as a result I can no longer access any of my FTP locations. I have turned off Vista's firewall, turned off AVG, checked the router, made a new port 21 rule, and restarted my PC. I simply can't figure out what might have happened and I can't seen to find any solution.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer.
This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead.
Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too.This is really annoying.
Someone suggested a fix months ago, but I do not remember how. Would appreciate tips on this. I *do* already have checked on "remember folder's view settings" enabled as well.

I posted before but couldn't get a resolution to my situation. I'm setting up a new user for me on my girl friends laptop. She is on as the Administrator, I created a 'new User' for myself but software such as Blackbery desktop, Google Chrome and the dial-up for my Blackberry don't seem to be accesable, at least not readily> I did go to the Google chrome folder and made it "sharable" with my user account but after going to my account, still couldn't access it unless it went through permission by administrator. I'm confused as I assumed that if any new user accounts were set up that all software that was down loaded and install while in the Administrators user account (my girl friend) that they would be easily accessable in any new user accounts that we set up, right? wrong?

When I dug into it a bit, I found I couldn't access the update server from a web browser. In fact, I can't even reach the main Sophos site. I can't believe they are down. I can reach many other web sites I've tried, including this one. Could I have something messed up in my settings somewhere that would prevent access to this one web site? View 4 Replies View Relatedabout a week ago i installed Windiws Vista Business. i noticed a couple of times that my PC jusr restarted itself. other than that it worked fine up until last night. it all started with intenet explorer. i couldn't open any website. it said something about corrupted file. so i figured i'll give it a restart. and then the it wouldn;t boot up anymore. it says that windows failed to start.... then it says:

windows failed to start because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt. i already tried to do what it said there. it told me to put in the original CD of vista and click on repair. well that didnt work. it was repairing over 18 hours and nothing is happening.
Not sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.

I'm running Vista Home edition on my laptop and when I use my laptop at home, it keeps on connecting to an unsecured default wireless network, instead of connecting to my home network, which is named and is secured. I guess one of my neighbours decided to just run their wireless network like that. How can I prevent my laptop from connecting to other networks other than the ones I specify? LAN network created by DSL-Router AVM FritzBox 7270. One LAN client - windows xp pro sp3 One WLAN client - vista business 32bits sp1. USB mass storage connected to router. Router shares the drive using samba server. Win xp has no problems while accessing this drive. Vista can access the drive only if it is not protected by password. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.
Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.
Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
Dell Studio Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. Home wired & wireless network with Wireless N D-Link router, Netgear ReadyNAS duo wired to router, PS3 game console connected to router. I only use wireless from my laptop. When I try to move files around on the NAS using windows explorer, I can't seem to browse the NAS' content for more than a few minutes, then explorer locks up or enters a mode where it keeps refreshing the view of the network directory and doesn't allow basic file operations like right-clicking on a file to get its properties.
I can't get more than 1 Mbps of transfer speed with Robocopy out of the NAS. I have some video files on the NAS unit. Double clicking on any video to play it in Media Player is the worst thing to do - WMP doesn't manage to download enough data to buffer it and never allows to be shut down. I prevents Windows from shutting down cleanly. I made sure I had the latest drivers for the wireless adapter.
This past Friday, my 12 yr old daughter decided to create a user account for her (without asking) so my 10 yr old son doesn't mess with her "Sims" game. Now MY user account (administrator) password doesn't work and the password she claims she put on her new user account doesn't either,and I did not have a password recovery cd, So I'm locked out out of C: NTK (308 Gb) partition.

I inserted my OEM vista home basic dvd to go thru "recover my computer" and do a system restore but came to find out that my dvd-rom drive is not spinning the disk (took it apart and cleaned the lense with alcohol etc) drive does not make
that buzzing/spinning sound as before when cd/dvd was inserted.
I booted up with D:RECOVERY (10GB) made a bootable USB drive with vista ISO
(a while back I made an ISO image of my OEM vista to make copies in case original got lost or scratched) changed BIOS to boot from "removeable" and I was able to
access "recover my computer" but when I click on system restore, it asks for password, so there goes that idea.
Also tried CMD on the "recover my computer" user interface and typed: (C:> net users) and it only shows "Nano1" which is the admin account for the RECOVERY partition ( stupidly forgot that by using my D:RECOVERY to boot up, it becomes C
so I tried (D: net users) and again it only shows "nano1" also tried (D:Windows system32>net users Administrator active:yes) and it says operation completed sucessfully, after reboot on C:NTK drive there is no admin account available
then tried(D:Windows system32>net users Nano2 /add *) and still nothing.
Downloaded the "offline NT password and registry" followed instructions to make a USB flash drive(formated drive to FAT32) restart computer boot it from usb it starts loading (all the white letters etc) then it just freezes, wont let me do
anything, tried it several times and it always freezes at same spot, so tried the download again,reformat the USB drive and it did the exact same thing, so I decided to make a bootable ISO image of the "offline NT password and registry" had to reformat USB drive back to NTFS and add it the ISO booted from USB and viola! same crap happens ....
Been using Home Premium 64 SP1 on HP Pavilion dv7-211 laptop for about 3 months. Still using 98SE on two desktops and XP on another laptop. I'm 75 and my memory has not improved with age, so I may not remember everything correctly. My best recollection is that I didn't have the problem until recently. Every time I totally shut down I lose my resolution setting. It always returns to the lowest resolution. I've looked through the other posts and didn't spot this kind of problem.

I can access the site but when I attempt to use my username and password Windows Vista does not recognize the username and password I entered. I've reset the password and this program (Windows Vista) does not allow it to work for some reason. I can access the site and log on from any other computer but not my own computer. I have deleted the browsing history in an attempt to remove any stored info on the pc but that doesn't seem to work either.
