Couldn't Upgrade Windows Vista Home Premium, Couldn't Connect To The Internet
May 5, 2009
I had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?

Cannot connect Vista H.P. to ADSL internet (NETIA, if someone knows what I'm talking about). The same connection and settings work for XP I have on another computer. They share the same modem, I just connect it to Vista computer or XP. Vista says it's an error 851. When I try to set up a Phone connection (like it works on XP), the only modem that's shown is an internal modem, not the ADSL one.

Not sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.
Features I do like:...............

I'm running Vista Home edition on my laptop and when I use my laptop at home, it keeps on connecting to an unsecured default wireless network, instead of connecting to my home network, which is named and is secured. I guess one of my neighbours decided to just run their wireless network like that. How can I prevent my laptop from connecting to other networks other than the ones I specify? I've looked in the settings and options in the wireless connection management utility in Vista and couldn't find a way to do that. Perhaps i didn't look hard enough,

I was trying to access my FTP through vista explorer, but couldn't remember my password. I typed in the wrong password a few times and as a result I can no longer access any of my FTP locations. I have turned off Vista's firewall, turned off AVG, checked the router, made a new port 21 rule, and restarted my PC. I simply can't figure out what might have happened and I can't seen to find any solution.

I had to replace my motherboard because of a power surge (I've now bought protection - better late than never!) and when I tried to boot up my computer I got a message saying that Vista couldn't boot but it would try and repair the installation. In the event it couldn't and it asked for the installation disc. Vista installed OK but it would no longer accept the Product Key saying that my disc was for an upgrade (correct) and not for a clean installation. ObviouI now appear to have two expensive choices:
1 To buy a new key
or
2 To ask for Windows technical support which I have to pay for

When Vista had a problem and I couldn't boot, I had to backup my mail by copying the entire folder from the hidden AppDataLocalMicrosoft folder. Then I had to reinstall Vista, and I copied the Windows Mail folder to the same location on the new install. Windows Mail works fine except when I click Send/Receive or press Ctrl+M. The Task/Errors screen pops up, and it says "Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Plese review the list of errors below for more details" ONly there are no errors listed in the errors window, it's blank. I can Receive All, or Send All, and the program sends and receives on startup as usual.

My computer crashed. I re-installed HP Recovery Disc & Windows Anytime Discs - all seemed well. Then it started telling me I needed to - "Activate Windows in so many days or it would (I believe it said) become inactive? Which it did I'm now back to just Windows Home Premium.
Does this mean I have to fork out more money? and I guess and can't even just get the upgrade this time around can I? because I'm already on the Home Premium? I fairly new at all this. I'm not a computer tech, just a someone that has a homebased computer.

I purchased from Staples (07/05/2007) the Windows Anytime Upgrade disc to go from; Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. (This was all from from a complete witch over from Windows XP to begin with as I bought a new computer system. Which, quite truthfully has been nothing but frustrating and headaches right from the beginning).

This might be a silly question, but I need some advice. I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and since the release of windows 7, the price of Vista Ultimate has dropped dramatically. My questions are these. What would be the benefit of upgrading to vista ultimate on a home PC or should I just upgrade to Windows 7?

Just took delivery of my whizzy new PC running Vista Home Premuim (x64).
I'd stuck with my Pentium4 on XP Pro. Well, actually did not have much choice as the old beast died a death. Mobo trashed! I got the message from M$ that HotMail would no longer be supported on Outlook, and have been trying to install Live Mail. I keep getting the error "Sorry, we couldn't install these programs". How helpful is THAT! I finally tracked down a standalone install kit for WLM and now have messenger installed and (eventually) working.

I couldn't find a newsgroup that was English Windows updates, so since most updates involve security issues I guess I will vent here. This is the second time in about two months that my Vista Home Premium 32 bit desktop computer has been stuck in Update hell. It was perfectly fine all day yesterday and then when I started it this morning, it went to the green and blue screen "Configuring Updates State 3 of 3 0% complete Do not turn off your computer" and then it restarts, only to return to that exact same screen.
After watching it do that at least six times I finally turned it off. It took me about 14 more tries to get to start in a "safe" or "repair" mode which it is in now, still being "repaired." That was two hours ago. When this happened last time it was at the exact same point with the 3 of 3 screen. It seems that the only solution to this would be to turn off automatice updates and check for them and install them when my computer is not coming out of a cold start. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have a better solution to avoid this than turning off automatice updates?

My subject on this posting may be misleading. I am actually looking for a reliable full backup solution so that I can perform the upgrade with some confidence that I won't lose everything. Vista Home Premium (also Home Basic) does not include Complete PC Backup. (It was a surprise to me too!) I need a full/complete backup solution. Otherwise, the restore task is piecemeal... and very cumbersome to do and contemplate.
Should I purchase backup software? Disk imaging software? Recommendations? I purchased a sizeable disk drive and can connect it with usb. Does the Windows 7 upgrade have any options to perform the needed backup? Not likely I imagine.
Does Windows 7 Home Premium have the same defect of no Complete PC Backup or equivalent Yeah, I think it's a bad defect! This must be the first OS without a full backup solution! Or am I missing something?

a friend brought over his vista machine (home premium 64 sp1) and it cannot connect to the net. not through ie7 (for him preferred), firefox, or this other one he has called wyzo. there also seem to be multiple copies of ie on the box (ie and an ie 64).i started researching the problem on the 'net, and found, well, all kinds of info. a little background...i have a wrt54g, a compaq desktop/xp sp2, powerbook g4 osx10.4, old ass compaq latop running fedora9, acer aspire one xp hsdpa, and a ps2, and xbox through a hub to a network bridge. all wirelessly connected. to slow ass at&t. and it all works and it's working as i post this. (itunes radio alternative/live105) so i know its not my network.so with all the info thats readily (abeit you have to sift) available, i tried a few things. the wireless portion of the laptop seems to be working. hardware wise it lights up and switches. it connected to my network fine. start ie7 and nothing. i installed firefox. nothing. "cannot find page" and all that. same with that wyzo. i even plugged it in physically to the router with some cat5. i let it try to diagnose itself and it of course cant find the problem.so i dig into google and come up with the dhcp flag thing. checked it, its already set at 1. but its called DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag and thats for both devices. i also found info about an update that is messing people up. but the only MS updates on the machine are MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB941833 and KB954430). nothing is checked in lan settings for automatic ip configuring.this is so odd to me.

I've tried everything I used to do with Windows XP to get my iMac talking with this ThinkPad with Vista Home basic (and the other direction) but nothing is working - except me spending way too much time searching this out all over. my iMac has OS X 10.4.11 and I've been all over the Sharing folder in System preferences.
on the Thinkpad SL400 with Vista Home Basic, solutions I DID find I just couldn't access: some Security Options just not available in the Admin section. I just want to be able to grab files from one to another instead of emailing them to myself.
I have both on my desk w ethernet connections; and we also have a linksys wireless for my laptop when I leave my office. I thought before I call some local computer service I would ask, can anyone here advise a link or a fix

Using SimpleOCR I scanned text. I wanted to email it and save it to Documents. The SimpleOCR scan had no provision to send it, so I saved it to Desktop, and it saved in Open Office (I have MS Works and Open Office but I don't know why it saved to Open Office since I usually Works for word processing). The saved scan I rightclicked Copy. When I tried to Paste in Hotmail email, I clicked the dark Paste but it did not paste. When I copied and tried to paste the scan to a Works word processing page, the Paste option was grey and I couldn't paste it there either. How can I copy and paste a Simple OCR scan?

I am helping somebody fix their PC (Vista Home Premium on a Gateway laptop) via Windows Remote Assistance. The first time that we used it (after some success), after a planned restart, I couldn't reconnect and the remote user's keyboard would result in gibberish (e.g. type one letter, get something totally different on the screen). We needed to rebuild the PC anyway, so this just prompted us to finally get around to doing this. After reinstalling the O/S, we used WMA successfully and without incident to install many applications such as anti-virus, Adobe Reader, etc. Then, we had to reconnect after a planned restart. This time, I had the remote user invite me by saving the invitation as a file and sending it to me. We had been previously doing the invitations directly by email (without the file). Instantly after creating this file, the keyboard gibberish reappeared. I have no idea how to fix this. In both failure events, I tried System Restore points to times prior to the error, but this did nothing. I have looked at the keyboard layout and the language options, but they are fine and do not appear to be part of the problem. I have seen a couple of references to this on the web, but no good solutions offered. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I loaded Vista x64 on my machine as an upgrade. Had everything loaded perfectly, etc... I tried installing Windows 7 Beta. After it was installed I realized that not only are there not enough drivers available, but I stalled it on top of vista instead of it's own partition (colossal screw up). I also realized I couldn't rollback the installation. I didn't feel like re-installing XP and vista wasn't letting me reinstall. So I came up with the brilliant idea of installing it clean without any key code. Now how do I activate this or reinstall vista and keep all my programs, files, etc... (ie. not spend countless hours reinstalling everything I have)?

Whenever I start Firefox on my Vista home premium 64 bit system, I always get a window asking me what I would like my home page and search engine to be. I check yahoo for my home page and my search engine, check "don't ask me again" and save. However when I start firefox again, it goes to the firefox welcome page and the same box pops up again. Anybody know what's going on? This is a recent phenomenon, and happens no matter which search engine or home page I select.
