View 9 RepliesI had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?

I am posting it to the Vista newsgroup since I suspect this is a Vista problem rather than an IE problem; let me know if that is not the case.
I've just formatted (twice now cause I thought maybe there was wrong with the first installation) my Vista 32 SP1 PC and put 64 on, did all the latest updates. Everything works great except my memory usages is always very high.
my internet speed is playing up real bad. I can browse and do what I want at normal speeds but as soon as I start downloading anything my internet slows down to an unbearable pace, web pages take so long to open that I have to cancel my download
i couldn't open a program so i chose "Open as" and didn't realize i had "always use this program for all files" and now nothing at all will open except my browser and everything is saved as a .EXE file i have windows vista. Also whenever i try and download something it saves as a .EXE Im not too tecky so bit by bit instructions would be nice
View 4 Replies View RelatedCould not open my Media Player, no error codes and had just used it. I have Vista 64bit Premium Home version. After reading several posts tried a few things such as:
1) Made sure Media Player was the default (go to Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Play CDs and other media automatically and select appropriate boxes to use Media Player as the default - meaning it will automatically use Media Player).
2) unplugged my MP3 player from the PC (I charge it using the PC, no problem in the past)
3) rebooted my PC I selected Media Player and it popped right up.
about a week ago i installed Windiws Vista Business. i noticed a couple of times that my PC jusr restarted itself. other than that it worked fine up until last night. it all started with intenet explorer. i couldn't open any website. it said something about corrupted file. so i figured i'll give it a restart. and then the it wouldn;t boot up anymore. it says that windows failed to start.... then it says:

windows failed to start because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt. i already tried to do what it said there. it told me to put in the original CD of vista and click on repair. well that didnt work. it was repairing over 18 hours and nothing is happening.
how you get the pages/folders up on the screen stacked vertical like book pages? i can seem to find the settings for it anywhere coming from Xp!
View 5 Replies View RelatedNot sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.

I did not time the I.E. 7, but it was a lot faster to open. Furthermore, I did not notice any improvements.
I am finding my internet is slow, I open utorrent or vuse or a torrent program that uses bandwidth and I lose all internet browsing, msn messenger but skype stays online and the torrents download at a slower rate but still download.... as soon as i close any bandwidth sucking program the internet comes back but still a slower speed. i have adsl2+ so speed shouldnt be an issue

If I open control panel and check up my security status or device manager or for example another system settings it's just saying the same!!I can't even run my antivirus.What is going wrong?Is my comp infected or something?
My problem is that I can't open IE7 links from within WinMail anymore. I've looked here and elsewhere for a solution ('Windows cannot find 'http -/- html'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again'). From this and other events, I suspect this is a permissions issue.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running a dell dual core with 2 gb of memory and a 200 gig hard drive, with Mozilla Firefox. In the past I have been able to peruse perhaps 15-20 web pages, reduced in size and it hasn't slowed down at all. All of a sudden after four or five windows accrue the computer comes to nearly a stop and it takes forever to load that last page. I have to wait a long time before I can even close the windows.
I have cleared all the temp files and cache, removed cookies and cleaned everything up.
I have a new machine with Vista Home Premium. I find when browsing in IE8 it works fine for a while then it just can't seem to load any pages even my home page. No message, just a blank screen and the green bar across the bottom sitting there about half way across and doesn't go any further as if it can't load the page. I have cleaners I have tried but the only thing that works is to restart my machine.

When I open task manger it indicates that the page is not responding. This happened approximately 30 times today alone. I have no idea what is causing this problem so I don't have a clue as to what to do to fix it. I can click on "open as a web page" to open them, but then I can't print them as a whole document, only the part of the page on the screen. It shows the item in print preview but when print is selected nothing happens other than the printer icon shows briefly before disappearing followed by nothing. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Compac desktop, running Windows 7 (upgrade from Vista) and Explorer 8. My problem is the web pages that I go to and add to my favorites will not remember me. Each time for instance I go to Bank of America I have to put in all my login info again. Same with TV guide.will not remember my zip code, although it's supposed to. Is there some sort of setting I should have checked or something? It's really getting annoying to have to put in the same info time after time.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Lexmark X2450 has been working on my Vista PC since May'07. Sometime in the last few weeks something has changed and initially it seemed that it wouldn't print anything. Lots of experimentation and uninstalls later, I've come to the conclusion that the printer is O.k. as it will print test pages and IE web pages, but I can't get it to print anything else, (Word docs etc. These show as spooling, printing then deleting in the print queue. Note: Last night, I gave up trying at 2am turned the printer and PC off and turned it off at the wall - the next morning my son turned on the PC and some of the print attempts from last night printed!
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe other day gmail started complaining that my cache was full so I cleared it and increased the size to 1024MB. This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE7 is not caching anything at all - at least, the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is empty.
This leads me to consider a permissions problem, more so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition. I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give "everyone" full control. This has not resolved the problem. Some files have appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up, not even cookies. rss.xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget (even though it's not running?!).....
Is it possible that Vista updates are causing my web browsing and other network functions to fail frequently. My problem is that I often cannot access any of my web browsers home pages. My PS3 occasionally disconnects from Tversity, claiming a DNS error. I have had this problem using both wired, and wireless connection to router........
