View 4 RepliesMy problem is that I can't open IE7 links from within WinMail anymore. I've looked here and elsewhere for a solution ('Windows cannot find 'http -/- html'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again'). From this and other events, I suspect this is a permissions issue.

I am unable to access internet live links from Windows Mail. when I try, I get - Internet Explorer has stopped working' 'a problem caused the program to top working correctly' Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available', which of course it does not! The same applies if I click Start / Help and Support - I am unable to access any of the live links under 'Ask Someone'. I have posed this question in microsoft/public/windows/vista/mail but they are unable to help. I am trying to find a solution without having to pay Microsoft ?40+.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have had vista for about 2 years now and with a recent set of updates a few things stopped working, I've fixed all but one and am stumped. my Vista sidebar won't open no matter what I try to do to it. the updates I installed were: [Windows Defender update - *KB915597* (definition 1.65.957.0)] [Vista Service Pack 2 - *KB948465*]
they were installed on [9/21/2009] at [9:04am and 9:11am] I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit on a Sager 9260 laptop. After these 2 update the windows sidebar will no longer start. It is still set to open when starting windows It is *not* in the task manager It will not run when clicking the shortcut, using run>sidebar, or through the command prompt. I have tried a variety of solutions presented to me on this and other forums including java update checking to verify that it is in the registry and a few command prompt solutions I think the issue has something to do with the sbdrop.dll file
searching for the sbdrop.dll in command prompt I found these entries
C:PROGRAM FILESWINDOWS SIDEBARSBDROP.DLL
C:PROGRAM FILESWINDOWS SIDEBAREN-USSBDROP.DLL.MUI[/B]4 VERSIONS OF THIS WITH DIFFERENT NUMBERS........
I have this site whose link is Given that I use it quite frequently I would like it to appear as a button on one of the toolbars but the best I could do was add it to Favorites or to the Links drop down menu which to me is no different than Favorites because you still got to go through a drop down menu. I tried resizing the Links part of the toolbar so that it would be wider so that the links on the menu would actually show up as buttons on the toolbar but I could not drag it and I don't think it's possible. Anyone know how to add a link to internet explorer as a quick always visiable one-click button whose icon is the favicon for the site?
View 6 Replies View RelatedYou can also open Windows Sidebar by clicking the Start button, typing sidebar in the search box, and then pressing ENTER. To bring gadgets to the front using a keyboard shortcut Press the Windows Logo key +SPACEBAR. I have also read the same thing throughout the web which comfirms that this is the right keyboard shortcut.
I have all the information that tells me how to open windows sidebar using a keyboard shortcut the problem is nothing happens when I do it. I went to my other computer running vista and as soon as I did the shortcut windows sidebar popped right up. The computer I am using is about 1 week old, the first thing I did was update it so it should be fully updated and I can confirm right now it has SP2 and windows update says there are no updates available (which is surprising since vista seems to have hourly updates). There is nothing wrong with the windows key or space bar key as they both work independently and for other shortcut combinations.
If I want to open the internet it just says "Windows cannot access the specified path or file. U may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." If I open control panel and check up my security status or device manager or for example another system settings it's just saying the same!!I can't even run my antivirus. What is going wrong? Is my comp infected or something?
This is really weird, my intenet is working and i know this because i play pc games that require internet (Wow) but neither internet explorer or firefox is working. It is driving me crazy. INFO OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I am connecting through netgear router. (although it does not matter because internet is working) I have tried system restore and re-downloading IE and firefiox. No new updates have been made that i know of.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system. This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer. Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location. For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been having more or less continuing problems with my HP OEM Vista Home Premium. Several times a day it has been hanging up whether I am using Firefox (preferred) or Internet Explorer. I have checked with every tool I can put my hands on but with no positive results. I am now looking at: Reinstalling Vista OEM (would loose all my data information, bookmarks, purchased tools, etc). Buying a copy of Vista Home Premium Upgrade for about $60 or so on Ebay. By doing this could I do a repair on Vista without loosing all my info? Buying Norton Internet Security or a version that hones in on Vista.
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery morning I wake up, I have to re-start my computer in order to get Firefox or Internet explorer to work. Have tried all below with both wired and wireless connection. All other functions, icons and various do-dads work, just connecting. If I happen to pass out and forget to logout of either Mozilla or IE, the screen I was on stays up but when I hit re-fresh(IE) or reload (mozilla) the problem pops up.
1. Wake up and touch mouse, desktop comes up, no problem
2. Check network connection, all seems good. Network icon shows full connection, you see the globe symbol, all good.
3. Try to access either Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox.
4. I.E. says it cannot connect and Mozilla says, well it says nothing at all except for "done" in bottom left corner of screen, but leaves a blank screen.
5. Have checked my power settings, and have made sure that both plugged in and on battery that the computer is not set to sleep. Never sleep............
Having surveyed numerous similar posts I am at a loss as to how to resolve this issue, hence posting my specifics...all help greatly appreciated.
I am running Vista Home premium, IE8, Firefox 3.5.3, AVG free and Zonealarm. On starting the PC there is no problem connecting to the internet through either browser or updating email (Windows Mail).
Problem...
Loss of internet connection via IE and/or Firefox whilst Mail can still send/receive. I have tried clearing the cache etc but the only thing that works is re-booting the laptop (Dell XPS 1330).
I mainly browse with IE but downloaded Firefox in case IE was the problem. One or the other will lose connection first then the other will follow.
I downloaded Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser a short while ago and it was working fine. But then my Vista automatically updated and I think that was where the problem started. I think in the update it heightened the security on my computer, not necessarily a bad thing but annoying because every time I launch Firefox it has to ask my permission to continue.
I think this is because it is trying to access the internet and is not microsoft software. I have looked it up in windows help and have a slight suspicion that it might be to do with something called "user account control". It helps stop unauthorized changes to your computer. Is there any way to convince it that Firefox isn't harmful and make an exception for it?
When I open the first website it takes 42 seconds. The second takes 20 no matter what order I open them. If I close IE or Firefox and re-open the website it takes 32-40 seconds. The second takes 20. When I open the first program it takes 9 seconds. I do not have a lot of programs running, run my utilities regularly, use CCleaner daily. My hardrive has 50 of 150g used. Is there a way to cut down the load time of the initial website?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
my friend's email is thru gmail. she has a links button (looks like chain links) that she uses to provide links to websites *without* showing the website address. it simply highlights a word she has typed and the mail recipient clicks on that word to go to the website. i think several words (a phrase) can be highlighted as well as just one word. so she might say, 'click here for more info' and the word *here* will be highlighted and contains the link. does windows vista mail have this feature? i cannot find it.
