i bought a western digital My book essentials 500GB external hard disk a few days before. instead of gaining direct access to the drive, i was prompt to install the driver software. however, vista couldn't find the software. the HD is supposed to be plug and play. what can i do here? the HD works with other computers. my newly bought MP3 player is also facing the same problem.
View 9 RepliesI'm running Vista Home edition on my laptop and when I use my laptop at home, it keeps on connecting to an unsecured default wireless network, instead of connecting to my home network, which is named and is secured. I guess one of my neighbours decided to just run their wireless network like that. How can I prevent my laptop from connecting to other networks other than the ones I specify? I've looked in the settings and options in the wireless connection management utility in Vista and couldn't find a way to do that. Perhaps i didn't look hard enough,
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?
"Where" into what folder do i load a new game.? my computer loaded a game into a folder that cant be accessed.. this could be the source of many of my game problems how do i set them up to all be in the same place and have them all work .. i couldn't find it in C:/ i only found it by clicking 'Custom Download" during reinstall it showed up in a folder listed there, and i was able to track it down. it is not listed in "Un-Install Programs and Features" .. can i delete it from there, and download it somewhere else.. like the Windows Game list... which would be really handy.. how do i do that.??? sorry to be such an annoyance, i built a computer to play games and ..it seems to need tweek'n to play them......
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn my PC on in the morning it takes about 15 minutes to hook up to the internet and then it is just fine all day. My ISP says it is my PC and HP says my PC is fine. I have ran the Identify and Fix Network problems. It says it can't fix and it might be several net work adapters. A couple times it said it couldn't find my ISP provider. Both said to delete history and cookies and it didn't work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn first start up the comp couldnt find my dvd drive. Then after a few restarts it magicly found it. So Vista boots from disk, does all it should, then says to complete it needs to restart. there is only one restart in this whole precess. The drive im installing to have been formated, so its clean. So it restarts and pops up the screen to start the vista install all over again. Its not telling me to remove the disk while it does this, removed the disk when it restarted and all it said was boot error insert disk and press enter, or something to that effect. Now im noticeing after the many times its done this it takes a retarded amount of time to boot up and list my hard drives.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI couldn't find a newsgroup that was English Windows updates, so since most updates involve security issues I guess I will vent here. This is the second time in about two months that my Vista Home Premium 32 bit desktop computer has been stuck in Update hell. It was perfectly fine all day yesterday and then when I started it this morning, it went to the green and blue screen "Configuring Updates State 3 of 3 0% complete Do not turn off your computer" and then it restarts, only to return to that exact same screen.
After watching it do that at least six times I finally turned it off. It took me about 14 more tries to get to start in a "safe" or "repair" mode which it is in now, still being "repaired." That was two hours ago. When this happened last time it was at the exact same point with the 3 of 3 screen. It seems that the only solution to this would be to turn off automatice updates and check for them and install them when my computer is not coming out of a cold start. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have a better solution to avoid this than turning off automatice updates?
I have been looking for a better screenshot device/program, and I came upon this SnagIt8. My problem is after capturing the image and pasting it to a wordpad or equivalent, I couldn't find a way to copy/paste to a post like this one. The Paste was always grayed out when I tried to paste it here. Either that, or I would have an empty box with a red X at the top. I can't use the paperclip icon either, because people who clicked the link would be asked to join something before they could see the screenshot.

I've pushed the client fax ware out to all of the workstations which have Vista Ultimate SP1. I've configured the Windows Fax and scan to the fax server on the SBS 2003 by the server's name. But when I go to send a test fax it states that "it couldn't find a coverpage" and I've clicked ok and it goes to send it anyway then it states " the message could not be sent. The media is write protected." But the media was created on the Windows Fax and Scan interface.

I purchased 32bit Vista early after its release and then sent off to Ireland for the Vista x64 DVD, cost around ?10, I saw the offer in the 32bit box. I'm having some problems so wanting to reinstall 64bit Vista but for the life of me I can't remember whether I need a code to re-install Vista x64 from just the 64bit DVD, or whether I need to install the 32bit version first and then the 64bit upgrade goes in without needing another install code
I was trying to access my FTP through vista explorer, but couldn't remember my password. I typed in the wrong password a few times and as a result I can no longer access any of my FTP locations. I have turned off Vista's firewall, turned off AVG, checked the router, made a new port 21 rule, and restarted my PC. I simply can't figure out what might have happened and I can't seen to find any solution.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a simple text file with a certain word in it. I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it. Windows 2000, linked by network, finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work. Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in windows2000? I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. But not having a working search function doesn't look that "ultimate" to me.
I've been running my Vista machine with a Seagate hard disk. Works fine in paralell. I tried to hook it up with Firewire on both ends and Vista never recognized the HD. Is there something I am doing wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I upgraded my computer. I have some hidden files on my external from my old system (XP). I cannot, for the life of me get these files to open.
Here is what I have tried:
- Changing ownership (after disabling the easy sharing folder option)
- Working with the admin command prompt (every time it said the folder on my external was a bad or syntactically incorrect entry).
- Changing user permissions.
- Logging in on safe mode and trying the above things.
The files show up as green text, and even after all of these attempts (and copious head-against-wall banging) I cannot open the files. Every program I try to open them with says “You do not have permission to access this file”. A similar message is displayed every time I try to move or change the files.
I have been able to open a few of the files (since the problem began) even though they do not seem to be different file types or status’.
I read a few threads similar to this, but every method has failed, and my problem seems a little different given the XP to Vista nature of the problem and the green text nonsense.
I have my computer run an automatic backup each night to my USB connected external hard drive then automatically hibernate. However, I always need to remove the USB connection to my external HD before turning my computer on in the morning, or else it would just display a blinking dot when turned on. When I do forget about removing the external hd, I am forced to manually shutdown the computer. Once its turned back on, I get a message saying the resume from hibernate wasn't successful, and it asks me if I want to retry or delete the hibernation file. I choose to retry (having already disconnected the HD) and Vista resumes fine. I'm wondering how to resume Vista from hibernate without having to always disconnect my external HD prior to turning it on. The external hard drive is Western Digital and I'm using Vista Service Pack 1. Also, my sister's laptop resumes fine from hibernate with the external HD plugged in. One last thing, my computer resumes fine when put to sleep with the external HD plugged, its only hibernate that this happens.

Want to install XP into one of the existong partitions. However when the installation process come to the screen to select a partition it shows no partition at all. Instead it shows four things which look like drive placeholders, each saying that there is no drive in it.

This could be Photoshop, Dreamweaver, some image and video editing software, some tools, etc. I heard from some technical sources that Vista will become buggy with the old applications installed. Could anyone confirm that from your own experience and describe the bugs if any, so I could have a better understanding what to expect. Perhaps, a better advice would be to stay with Windows XP for a fewyears?

Task Manager shows the CPU spiked to 100%, but on closer inspection, no process in the list of "All Users" shows what's taking up the resource. All other desktop tasks are a SLIDE SHOW: opening windows, right clicking items, My Computer, Start menu, etc. I won't even bother commenting on the administrative popups and how long they take to appear and disappear. My first instinct was to search for 'cpu 100% max' and found other posts scattered throughout:
* disable the SSPD service. -- made no difference for me.
* disable the DNS Client service. -- made no difference for me........
I have a brand new genuine XP kit to replace windows vista, so we can run the software/hardware I need at work. Before the installation even begins, while the XP CD is still loading files, I get a bluescreen telling me windows has encountered a problem, and was forced to shut down to protect the system. Basically something in Vista wont let the XP CD even begin installation. I don't know what to do, I've been trying to re-format the hard-drive, IE blow away everything vista related, so it can't fight the XP installation. But some of the sys32 files can't even be removed. I've been doing a lot of research, and I've read some mixed opinions on the subject. Some folks say you can't replace Vista w/ XP, some say it needs to be dual boot, I've also been reading about slip discs and SATA drivers, I'm really not sure how these are supposed to work. But I've made a SLip Disc and copied all the XP v3 files I could. Still, I keep comming back to the problem of the XP CD not even begging installation.
I'll upload a picture of the bluescreen when I bring my camera to work tomorrow. I guess what I really needs is an in-depth explanation of some of these tricks I've been reading about. Right now I'm working with vistabootpro, I just set the Vista OS to legacy, I don't know if that will help at all! Also, for some reason I have a 1TB harddrive, yet I can only partition it into a 100GB and 900GB volume, so the dual boot isn't really feasible anyway. So, I'm open to all suggestions! I really need help, I'm the one who ordered this computer. Not realising that NEITHER my software or hardware is supported by Vista or windows 7. XP is the only OS that will do the job. Now, I'm pretty decent with computers, so don't ve afraid to lay it on thick. WHat it comes down to getting as many suggestions and possiblties to throw at this problem. I'll be back tomorrow with a pic of the error screen prior to XP installation. If I've omitted important information, please don't be afraid to question me, all I know is I've got to solve this problem and get XP running. There is nothing I need to save on this computer. Since I have V3 of XP I think I have the important drivers as well, essentially nothing is too risky to try, as long as I end up with XP. sorry about the long-winded rant. I'm very frustrated and worked up about this, kicking myself for not doing my homework.
after my computer automaticlly updating and installing vista sp1, on reboot i have no mouse cursor and in device manager there is no HID section, the light on my mouse is on but thers no cursor . it just looks like vista SP1 has just removed all forms of mouse drivers
