Protecting Backup Data Files
Dec 28, 2009I recently bought an external, portable hard-drive to use partly for backup, partly for mobility. It connects to the usb and I can copy files & folders back & forth, no problem. Some of the files contain confidential data. If the drive was lost or stolen it might be embarrasing. What are the best ways of protecting the data on an external drive?

Now, no trojan, virus worm or whatever malicious software will ever cause great damage to your system (Scan once every three days)
3. Last but not least, Windows' default firewall will do the trick. Let's face it, we don't want anything complicated controlling our internet traffic. I mean most of us these days are behind a router which has a built in firewall already. I honestly even didn't run my firewall with xp and was fine with it
Vista X86 Password Lost ,,
Oct 27, 2009This past Friday, my 12 yr old daughter decided to create a user account for her (without asking) so my 10 yr old son doesn't mess with her "Sims" game. Now MY user account (administrator) password doesn't work and the password she claims she put on her new user account doesn't either,and I did not have a password recovery cd, So I'm locked out out of C: NTK (308 Gb) partition.
THIS IS WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR!!
I inserted my OEM vista home basic dvd to go thru "recover my computer" and do a system restore but came to find out that my dvd-rom drive is not spinning the disk (took it apart and cleaned the lense with alcohol etc) drive does not make
that buzzing/spinning sound as before when cd/dvd was inserted.
I booted up with D:RECOVERY (10GB) made a bootable USB drive with vista ISO
(a while back I made an ISO image of my OEM vista to make copies in case original got lost or scratched) changed BIOS to boot from "removeable" and I was able to
access "recover my computer" but when I click on system restore, it asks for password, so there goes that idea.
Also tried CMD on the "recover my computer" user interface and typed: (C:> net users) and it only shows "Nano1" which is the admin account for the RECOVERY partition ( stupidly forgot that by using my D:RECOVERY to boot up, it becomes C
so I tried (D: net users) and again it only shows "nano1" also tried (D:Windows system32>net users Administrator active:yes) and it says operation completed sucessfully, after reboot on C:NTK drive there is no admin account available
then tried(D:Windows system32>net users Nano2 /add *) and still nothing.
Downloaded the "offline NT password and registry" followed instructions to make a USB flash drive(formated drive to FAT32) restart computer boot it from usb it starts loading (all the white letters etc) then it just freezes, wont let me do
anything, tried it several times and it always freezes at same spot, so tried the download again,reformat the USB drive and it did the exact same thing, so I decided to make a bootable ISO image of the "offline NT password and registry" had to reformat USB drive back to NTFS and add it the ISO booted from USB and viola! same crap happens ....
Vista Does Not Recognize The Username And Password
Jul 7, 2008I have registered on this website and have not been able to log onto the site for which I've registered. I can access the site but when I attempt to use my username and password Windows Vista does not recognize the username and password I entered. I've reset the password and this program (Windows Vista) does not allow it to work for some reason. I can access the site and log on from any other computer but not my own computer. I have deleted the browsing history in an attempt to remove any stored info on the pc but that doesn't seem to work either.

Apr 21, 2009I have several folders on one of my drives which I cannot delete. Vista responds that I don't have permission, yet I am logged in as the administrator with full rights.
1. Folders are not in use.
2. They are on an external 750GB USB-2 based drive (NTFS).
3. I also tried to delete them from an XP based system to no avail.
How can I get rid of these folders? There must be a simple way to do this without having to mess with the permissions. After all, I am, supposed to have "god rights". That is, I am the administrator of my home system with full RWMD rights.
Computers used:
Main computer: Vista Business SP1 (x32)
Laptop: XP Home SP3 (x32)
Sharing Xp Folders On XP Using VISTA
Mar 23, 2008I Have a problem that even Microsoft Esculation departmen't cant seem to fix at this time... I have Windows XP professional with SP2 on an old slow desktop computer connected via 100mb Ethernet Cable to a speedtouch DSL router. I only have two compters on the network. The other computer is a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with Window Vista Home Premium, with all service packs applied. It is connected wireless via the SpeedTouch DSL Router. The XP can Ping the Vista and the Vista can ping the XP. The XP can browse all folders on the vista and open documents and all is well in that direction.
The Vista can see the XP Computer and can see the shared folders on it as well as the printers, but if you try to open the folders that you see, you get an error message that says you probobly don't have the proper security permissions. It hangs there for 3 or 4 minutes before it produces that error...............
[Vista 64 Bit] Undeletable Folders
Oct 20, 2008I have a folder that is undeletable.
When trying to delete the folder an error box will pop up saying that...
"Item Not Found"
"Could not find this item"
"This is no longer located in C:... Verify the item's location and try again"
Using the command prompt, or safe mode does not work.
This isnt the 1st time.
It happens when a program is downloading, and the program decides to make 2 folders for the same download.
The 2 folders look identical, with the same name.
You delete 1 of the folders, and you are left with 1.
On a closer look, the folder left behind has a space at the end of the filename.
This could be a space or possibly an illegal character that cant be displayed.
Can't Access The Folders On The Vista
Mar 7, 2009I have 2 XP machines and one new Vista machine. I have set up my wireless/wired network just fine. My 2 XP machines can share files and I can use either computer to access the other's files. Enter the Vista machine. I set up the network as requied and have a Workgroup. I can "see" the names of the files/folders being shared on all machines. I can use my Vista machine and move files back and forth, access them, etc. But when I sit at either of my XP machines, I can't access the folders on the Vista machine. When I try, I'm told "access denied." I've eliminated my firewalls, I have allowed full sharing. But nothing works.

Mar 23, 2008Why is Vista asking for a username and password everytime I try to access shares with password protection turned off on both Vista machines? Damn if I know. I can use the XP Pro machine to access the shared files on either Vista machine and don't get asked for a username/password. Vista's networking is flaky to say the least. The whole idea of small office networking is to be simple, Vista has tried to complicate this with password protection. Why should I have to have all users on every machine? That's just more network maintenance I don't want in a small home office. Besides some users may not want other people's accounts on their machines but they'd still like to share files and Vista has made this a nightmare.
Checklist:
File sharing : On (check)
Printer sharing: On (check)
Public sharing: On (check)
Password protection: Off (check)
Workgroup name the same (check)
Private network (check)
Logon to the router and I can see the Vista machines and the XP machine and the network printer. On XP machine access the shared printer on Vista 1, works like a charm. On XP machine open a shared folder on Vista 2, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on XP machine, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on Vista 2, sorry....do not pass go do not collect $200 until you enter a username and password. EXCUSE ME! Oh well, so much for progress. Not a firewall problem, get the same result whether or not a firewall is enabled or not. Haven't tried a crossover cable between the 2 Vista machines to see if it's the router but I have my doubts because XP works fine. Solution: Move all shared printers and files to XP and forget Vista sharing.
Folders & Groups :but Vista Does Not Permit Me
May 4, 2008When using XP/Outlook Express (OE) I was able to sort my 250+ addresses into Folders and Folders into Groups but Vista does not permit me to do it.Folders permitted me to sort by major catagories and Groups permitted me to send bulk distribution within a Folder.If I make a Contact Group in Vista if works like Groups in XP/OE sending mass distribution from the Vista Group.Anyone know how to bring this OE capability back into Vista?

- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.
- Network is set to Private
- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"
- Both computers can ping eachother
- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.
- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work
- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website

Oct 31, 2009I have Vista Home Premium on an Acer Laptop and all was fine until I decided to change my user password. I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.

Mar 9, 2009I used to have a network that consisted of: XP Pro / XP Home / Win 98 / Win 2000. they all saw each other and I was able to move & change files between them. I have had VISTA since 9/2008. however, my vista machine sees my XP machines and the shared folders but my XP machines don't see vista when I open network folder. I have everything shared, all permissions are full. I tried again to set up network on XP machine and it sees the vista shares but not allowed access. ps don't know if it matters, vista is a laptop running wireless.

In Windows Mail, it seems everything is being downloaded into one Inbox. Can I re-create the separate folders for each email account in WinMail?

Windows Mail Folders: Backup Mail, Not Using Vista Backup
Feb 15, 2009I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.
