Sharing Xp Folders On XP Using VISTA

Mar 23, 2008

I Have a problem that even Microsoft Esculation departmen't cant seem to fix at this time... I have Windows XP professional with SP2 on an old slow desktop computer connected via 100mb Ethernet Cable to a speedtouch DSL router. I only have two compters on the network. The other computer is a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with Window Vista Home Premium, with all service packs applied. It is connected wireless via the SpeedTouch DSL Router. The XP can Ping the Vista and the Vista can ping the XP. The XP can browse all folders on the vista and open documents and all is well in that direction.

The Vista can see the XP Computer and can see the shared folders on it as well as the printers, but if you try to open the folders that you see, you get an error message that says you probobly don't have the proper security permissions. It hangs there for 3 or 4 minutes before it produces that error...............

Sharing Folders The Desktop

Apr 28, 2009

I am trying to create remote file sharing among my colleagues. We want to use a desktop (with no wireless connection) with business vista as the server and create all the sharing folders in the desktop. After that, we connect to the desktop through a common workgroup. We have done all the setup but we simply can't remotely connect to the desktop at all. The error msg is 0x80070035 and network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Cannot communicatge with the "Desk Computer Name - ip address" Can someone teach me and show me what is the problem? Don't refer me to another websites because I have already checked and I still don't understand.

Sharing Folders Cannot Be Accessed

Sep 3, 2008

I'm trying to set up a wireless network between my Vista x64 PC and an XP laptop. Both running the latest service packs and updates etc. Nothing fancy, just trying to share my collection of music and videos with the laptop. Now, on both machines I can see each shared folder, but can't access them all for some reason. On the Vista pc I'm sharing "Videos" and "Music", and both appear on the XP laptop; however, while Music is brows-able and working fine, for some reason Videos cannot be accessed. I've checked and both Videos and Music have the exact same permissions etc., so I can't figure out why one is accessible and not the other.

Sharing Folders Fails

Aug 5, 2009

I attempted to share the "Documents" folder on my new Vista machine but am apparently doing something wrong. When I check the folders shared, it's listed. But when I check "My Network Places" on the Windows XP" machine on my LAN, all I see is "Users on Xps435mt" (the name of the computer is "Xps435mt"). I've created a target folder under "Documents" into which I want to place a backup copy of a Quicken file that's on the XP machine.

Access Denied When Sharing Folders

Aug 18, 2008

I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.

I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*

Info On Trouble Sharing Folders?

May 24, 2008

I used easy transfer to move files from an old Xp pc to windows vista pc. I then tried to do shared folders between the new pc and my laptop which is an xp system. I can see the laptop on my vista pc network and I can access the laptop files. When I click on folders in my vista machine that I identified to share they show as shared. When I go to my laptop with xp the new pc shows up in network places. However, as soon as I click on the icon for the shared folders I get an access denied -don't have permission to access. On my vista machine I have password protection off , discovery on, public folder on and file sharing on. The public folder allows me to click on its folders with no access issues but all the files that were transfered using easy transfer say access denied,

File Sharing And Print Does "Public Folders."

May 13, 2008

I have a small LAN with a Vista desktop (called Osiris) and a few XP laptops (one of which is called Snowdancer. Last week I did a "clean" install of Vista on Osiris. Before this clean install I had two way communications between Snowdancer and Osiris. I use Windows Explorer to move files between the two. After the clean install Osiris could still manipulate files on Snowdancer, but the reverse is not happening. BTW, print sharing works and so does "Public Folders." From this I conclude that I do not have a connection issue, right? I do not have a Domain.

My C: drive is "Shared." I log into Snowdancer with my full name Robert Schuldenfrei and a password. I log into Osiris with my nickname Bob and no password. I am an administrator on both systems. I have searched through this NG for similar problems and there are lots of posts. I have come up short with every repair I have looked into, so I must be missing something. Remember, before my clean install I had this working just fine.

Sharing Between XP And Vista

Mar 23, 2008

We have a combination wired/wireless home network in my house, consisting of 4 computers, all connected through the router which connects directly to the internet. The configuration is this:

Desktop1 - connected directly to router, running XP
Desktop2- connected directly to router, running Vista
Laptop1 - connected wirelessly, running Vista
Laptop2- connected wirelessly, running XP.

As of right now, Desktop 2, Laptop1 and Laptop 2 have no problems sharing files with each other. Desktop 1 can view all the other computers shared files, but Laptop1 cannot
view any of Desktop 1's shared files. I consistently get a "denied access" message.

I don't know if the other computers can access Desktop1 (they aren't my computers). It's most important to get Laptop1 and Desktop1 to share files. All computers have shared files/printers on, with password protection off, and I've gone through the network wizards over and over.

I should mention that Laptop1 can *view* Desktop1 on the network. It sees it, it knows it's there...but the Desktop will not allow access, even though the files on the Desktop are set to be shared. I also tried turning the firewall off, and it still would not grant access. None of the other computers are having issues...there's go to be a solution to this, I'm just not finding it.

File Sharing Between XP And Vista

Oct 16, 2009

I just purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It is 64 bit with Vista Home Premium. Desktop is Compaq with XP. Connection between the two is cable direct connect through a Linksys router. Occasionally I do go wireless. Its a very simple network and its doesn't require any security since i am the only person that uses both computers. Toshiba can read and write files on Compaq.

Compaq can see the Toshiba in its network places but when I double-click on it, I get a request for a username and password which I do not know what to respond to since I have no passwords set on the Toshiba. I've set sharing on Toshiba C-drive and even turned off the Windows Firewall. How do I turn the password prompt off or at least know what to respond.

Both the pc's can ping each other and I've successfully configured them for sharing files and folders. But even though I've shared the gprs dialup connection on XP and selected the corresponding local area connection, Vista is not letting me access to the Internet! I have even disabled the firewall but it's still showing Local only.

Failed Windows Sharing WITH TWO VISTA Machines

Aug 6, 2008

I am having is I cannot acess my laptop with windows sharing/networking.I am trying to share files and printers between my Dexktop PC and my Laptop. My desktop PC is connect to a router with DNS by cable and the laptop is connected by Wi-Fi.Both computers belong to the same workgroup(WORKGROUP).Both computers have password protected public folder and printer sharing, file sharing, network discovery, and password protected sharing enabled. Both computers do have shared files and printers. What's happening is from the laptop the desktop(RK-PC)appears and I can share files and printers flawlessly and very quickly. However from the desktop while the laptop (RYANK-MOBILE) appears it cannot be accessed at all. Also the desktop is vista 64 bit and the laptop is vista business.I saw another thread with the same problem but the response pointed to a tome of an article that explained every single facet of windows sharing down to the way the packets are constructed. To be honest I don't have time to read 100 pages on windows sharing and there is no way the problem is the complicated.None of the suggestions I read in the first five pages or so helped at all any ways.I tried changing netBIOS from default to disabled on both PCs but after doing this the result was normal function on the laptop as before but the desktop could no longer even see/discover the laptop on the network.

Reinstall Vista's Network And Sharing Center- Weird Bug

May 29, 2008

I have one the strangest bugs ever created; and no one else seems to get it. I cannot detect any (very very few; not even my XP Machines, will explain
soon) of my computers on any network (wireless) I connect to. When I installed Vista bare clean, it did detect my netword computers, even the XP ones. But now, I feel like I should reinstall Vista. But, I really don't want to restore all (I have over 40gb) of my data. That would just take forever. Is there anyway at all to restore ALL Vista's Networking features/software to normal. Or back to default. I cannot restore using System Restore. I have been having this for about a month now, and it really messes me up! Over a week of using it, I just cannot detect any of my Networks. I can in Ubuntu; but not in Vista (my primary OS). I really love Windows. But, this is one of the worst glitches I have ever had with it.

Is it possible to reinstall Vista's Network and Sharing Center? I really want to detect my XP machines again. You might say, install LTDD (??) onto the XP machines. Well, the problem is, it still does not work. When I was using this PC a while ago, they were detected fine. But now, I cannot find any PC (hardly any; dunno why) on my network. This even happens at my Local Library. My friend searched, and he found over 200.

Delete Folders Which Vista Says I Don

Apr 21, 2009

I have several folders on one of my drives which I cannot delete. Vista responds that I don't have permission, yet I am logged in as the administrator with full rights.

1. Folders are not in use.
2. They are on an external 750GB USB-2 based drive (NTFS).
3. I also tried to delete them from an XP based system to no avail.

How can I get rid of these folders? There must be a simple way to do this without having to mess with the permissions. After all, I am, supposed to have "god rights". That is, I am the administrator of my home system with full RWMD rights.

Computers used:
Main computer: Vista Business SP1 (x32)
Laptop: XP Home SP3 (x32)

[Vista 64 Bit] Undeletable Folders

Oct 20, 2008

I have a folder that is undeletable.

When trying to delete the folder an error box will pop up saying that...

"Item Not Found"

"Could not find this item"

"This is no longer located in C:... Verify the item's location and try again"

Using the command prompt, or safe mode does not work.

This isnt the 1st time.

It happens when a program is downloading, and the program decides to make 2 folders for the same download.

The 2 folders look identical, with the same name.

You delete 1 of the folders, and you are left with 1.

On a closer look, the folder left behind has a space at the end of the filename.

This could be a space or possibly an illegal character that cant be displayed.
