1)what are the benefits of mapped drive and sharing folders in a home network?
2)which folder cannot be shared? can you think of reason why an operating system might not allow certain types of folders to be shared ?
3)Amapped drive provides apointer to a network resourse,but mapped drive letters are said to be locally signification only.what do you think is meant by locally significant ?
my computer doesnt have a wireless network card. It accesses the internet as it is connected to the wireless router with a yellow Ethernet cable. My laptop accesses the internet wirelesses. since my computer is connected to the wireless router, i thought it would be possible to set up a wireless home network to allow files sharing as well as accessing peripherals
on the laptop i went to Start>network>network & sharing center> set up a connection or network>set up a wireless router or access point, click next>click next> message says "Windows detected network hardware but cannot configure it automatically" i clicked the first option> logged on>but all settings were ok nothing wrong
i started everything again then chose the second option> i inserted the USB into the computer but i got a message saying i dont have the wireless network card/software on the computer . why does this matter since its connected to the wireless router
1)Is it possible to set up a wireless home network without buying anything
2)Can i have a really simple set by step guide on how to set this up in Windows Vista Home Premium
This is an issue about VISTA going into "LIMBO" trying to reconnect to my mapped network drives, which I know I don't have access since I'm connected VPN... This issue isn`t isolated to VISTA. I`ve had this issue with all Windows OS, I just never found a solution.
The workstation is part of the network, we log into a DOMAIN (pretty standard...) Often, when using certain VPNs, the "tunneling security" causes you to loose "Network Connections"... which is fine. I.e. If I have a mapped drive to a share on the network or If my default printer is a Network Printer, I cannot access it. You will get the "Could not reconnect to the network share, etc.etc. or printer is unavailable") Often, same goes for email with Outlook........
I have a Vista business machine that is used for Quickbooks. I have the data files in a folder (QBData) and it is shared with full permissions. I am mapping a drive from an XP machine so I can run quickbooks. The mapped drive and access to the files works fine until I close quickbooks and try to reconnect/open. It seems like Vista is not closing the connection correctly as I need to reboot Vista for the XP machine to be able to connect again.
Ever wonder why you get network authentication errors when you are trying access a mapped network share from a process that was elevated by UAC? Josh over at WindowsConnected has a great article on how you can fix this annoying issue:
On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.
Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's. When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens....
I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
I Have a problem that even Microsoft Esculation departmen't cant seem to fix at this time... I have Windows XP professional with SP2 on an old slow desktop computer connected via 100mb Ethernet Cable to a speedtouch DSL router. I only have two compters on the network. The other computer is a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with Window Vista Home Premium, with all service packs applied. It is connected wireless via the SpeedTouch DSL Router. The XP can Ping the Vista and the Vista can ping the XP. The XP can browse all folders on the vista and open documents and all is well in that direction.
The Vista can see the XP Computer and can see the shared folders on it as well as the printers, but if you try to open the folders that you see, you get an error message that says you probobly don't have the proper security permissions. It hangs there for 3 or 4 minutes before it produces that error...............
I am trying to create remote file sharing among my colleagues. We want to use a desktop (with no wireless connection) with business vista as the server and create all the sharing folders in the desktop. After that, we connect to the desktop through a common workgroup. We have done all the setup but we simply can't remotely connect to the desktop at all. The error msg is 0x80070035 and network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Cannot communicatge with the "Desk Computer Name - ip address" Can someone teach me and show me what is the problem? Don't refer me to another websites because I have already checked and I still don't understand.
have 3 computers - desktop and 2 laptops. laptops are on wireless. can I have access to email folders and My Docs/Favorites that are on all 3, from any one of the computers? If so, how do I do it, short of copying all the stuff to each individual computer.
I'm trying to set up a wireless network between my Vista x64 PC and an XP laptop. Both running the latest service packs and updates etc. Nothing fancy, just trying to share my collection of music and videos with the laptop. Now, on both machines I can see each shared folder, but can't access them all for some reason. On the Vista pc I'm sharing "Videos" and "Music", and both appear on the XP laptop; however, while Music is brows-able and working fine, for some reason Videos cannot be accessed. I've checked and both Videos and Music have the exact same permissions etc., so I can't figure out why one is accessible and not the other.
I attempted to share the "Documents" folder on my new Vista machine but am apparently doing something wrong. When I check the folders shared, it's listed. But when I check "My Network Places" on the Windows XP" machine on my LAN, all I see is "Users on Xps435mt" (the name of the computer is "Xps435mt"). I've created a target folder under "Documents" into which I want to place a backup copy of a Quicken file that's on the XP machine.

I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*
I used easy transfer to move files from an old Xp pc to windows vista pc. I then tried to do shared folders between the new pc and my laptop which is an xp system. I can see the laptop on my vista pc network and I can access the laptop files. When I click on folders in my vista machine that I identified to share they show as shared. When I go to my laptop with xp the new pc shows up in network places. However, as soon as I click on the icon for the shared folders I get an access denied -don't have permission to access. On my vista machine I have password protection off , discovery on, public folder on and file sharing on. The public folder allows me to click on its folders with no access issues but all the files that were transfered using easy transfer say access denied,
I have a 64-bit Vista Ultimate SP1 workstation that has mapped drives setup at login by a script coming from SBS 2003 R2. This method of mapping drives has been running quite happily on 32-bit machines for several years until I purchased and setup this new 64-bit machine. Only on this machine, if I double-click one of three mapped drives (S), I get the following error: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action......
I wanted to share some folders to transfer files from one PC to another. It worked for a while then it stopped. I do not remember the error msg but it was something like it could not connect to folder. Both PCs are on the network under workgroup domain.
I have two user accounts, one is an administrator. I don't want the standard account to be able to view the data in my account. I tried to "un-share folders but I keep getting this error message 'You could not stop sharing the selected folder.' Further info says that this folder is in a shared folder, huh? It shouldn't be.
Ive been using it for a couple months its pretty cool. They just came out w/ an update for it which made the GUI more aero like. It has neat file sharing folders and a lot of games you can play with people.
I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends.
I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.
I have a Vista Business machine and a Vista Home Premium machine. I want to share a Folder from the Vista Business machine to my kids Vista Home Premium machine...family photo's and such. I have it shared on my machine, but they can't connect to the drive from their machine. What am I missing? Getting "Access Denied" and I have permissions set to read only instead of full control. Advice and pointers are welcome. BTW, they are on a wireless PC that connects via my LinkSys Router. This is all on a HOME network.
I have a home network with 2 desktops connected. 1 running XP Pro the other running Vista Ultimate. I am trying to set up file and printer sharing, but the Vista machine can not see the XP one, or the network printer. The printer is connected to the XP machine. The network groups are the same, but I can not see the pc or the printer.
I cannot seem to figure out with my network sharing. I have a wireless network with 2 laptops running Vista home premium and 1 xp-pro laptop all behind a linksys router. At this point I have all computer seeing and sharing (only from public folders) fine. I want to be able to share one of the partitons that I created on one of the Vista laptops(home premuim) as a share for backup, but other Vista laptop won't let me have access to it. It does however let me have access to the public sharing folder though. How can I access this Drive/partition?
Network discovery is on, file sharing is on, printer sharing is on, password protection is on, all computers have same corresponding usernames and passwords, properties of the particular partition in question is configured to share. All computers have the same workgroup name. What I am trying to do, in a nutshell, is to be able to use that one partition for backup images for all 3 computers(has a very large drive on that specific laptop) So I even though about maybe mapping that it into the public sharing folder, a workaround, if you will, but I'm not sure if it would give me the available premissions to be able to do what I need it for.
Not sure why but I get (often) very bad performance using NNTP with Windows Mail (Windows Business) Often I will click on a group or message and wait and wait. After I while I get the msg that the server has not responded and I can stop or wait. This happens almost every time I use Usenet. It is not isolated to the Microsoft group as I also get Usenet posts through external-September.
I have used Usenet for 15 years and never had this problem till recently. People who use the same ISP as me don't have this problem. On occasion I can use it just fine so it is not a (personal) firewall issue.
All of sudden when I go to send a picture as an attachment, I get a message that my server has not responded and would I like to wait or stop. No matter what option I choose, no email can be sent or received as long as the message with the picture is still in the outbox. If I move that message to my drafts box then my other email will be sent and received but I can't send any email with pictures. I t was working fine since we go the computer in December and nothing new has been done to it.
i have all m network sharing turned on, I have followed a bunch of online tutorials. I still cannot share or recieve files on my vista computer. It works fine for my XP computer, just type in the path and its done. Not so with the Vista machine.
thats wat my problem is but I'm able to go online just its acting weird and also the network status thing has a red x instead of being filled in with blue
My main computer that has the printer installed is vista 64bit. The other computers around the house are XP pro 32bit. I can see the printer but when I try to print it says it does not the driver. I go to install additional drivers but it won't let it happen. I have a canon MP780 AIO printer. Can anyone tell me what needs to be done? I have googled but not found my answer.
