I have two user accounts, one is an administrator. I don't want the standard account to be able to view the data in my account. I tried to "un-share folders but I keep getting this error message 'You could not stop sharing the selected folder.' Further info says that this folder is in a shared folder, huh? It shouldn't be.

i tried to delete them (right click > delete). but when i restart my computer the folders are there again: how can i get vista to stop renewing those damn folders.
We have vista on both desktop (office-pc) and wireless laptop (daniel-pc) and a canon mp830 connected to the desktop pc. Desktop has macafee with firewall off and laptop had pc-cillin with firewall off. Both machines have identical sharing & discovery settings (no passwords), and the printer is shared. Both pc's see the other's files and printer. I plugged the MP830 into the laptop and let vista install the drivers.
When the printer is connected to the desktop pc, and I try to connect from the laptop, I get the 0x00000012 error. I then followed the advice in this forum and tried to create a local port on the laptop printer as \office-pcCanon830 and I get 'access denied'. Now, here's the thing, I plugged the printer into the laptop and tried to connect to it from the desktop. I clicked START, NETWORK, Daniel-pc and then right clicked the printer and clicked connect and IT DID. I then printed a document from the desktop to the printer connected to the laptop.
Next i uninstalled the printer from the desktop and then plugged it back in and let vista install the drivers as I had the laptop, thinking that perhaps there was a snag in the Canon software. I also downloaded the vista driver from Canon as I had done for the laptop. But when I tried to connect the desktop printer from the laptop, I once again got the 0X00000012 error. I've been round and round with this for a week and i must be missing some little thing.
My home TV service (AT&T U-Verse) allows for the playing of songs from a networked PC, over the TV and thus over the TV's sound surround speakers. For this to work, I need to allow all of my music folders/files to be shared. My music collection is housed in Itunes, which creates a folder for each artist, and sub folders for each album. I have about 4,000 songs, and 385 artists. "Beneath" these 385 folders for the artists, there is approximately another 700-800 sub folders. All of these folders/files are "not shared". How can I change all of the folders & files to "shared" WITHOUT having to do each one individually?

This email server is domain controller and we have one more file server which is windows server 03 joins in the domain. After upgraded the server, all of the User PC & email server cannot access or see share folders of another PC & email server each other except the email server can be able to access some windows vista PC. But all of the PC & servers (include email & filer server) can access file server share folders. Could you tell me which setting in server is wrong that cause this problem?

I installed a ati graphics card today with its own 1gb which should be more than enough ram for the kind of things I do since I am not really a serious gamer and am not into 1st person shooter type games. Router is Linksys WRT150n. 2 laptops, and second PC all with XP. second pc is connected to router by cable, not wireless."Server Machine" sees all machines on the Network page. Workgroup name matches on all 4 machines. The 3 XP machines cannot find the printer. When I run "add a printer" all I get is "Micrsosoft Windows Network" on the browse for printer page. I used to be able to see all the pc's and the printer attached to them. No new firewalls on any machines, I have disabled network discovery and printer sharing, and then reenabled. I have created a new workgroup name in hopes of fixing problem. I have run the network wizards.

I just installed vista yesterday, and it drives me crazy. I can't find "setup a home or small office network." I also tried "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" on pc2, but vista combined all the networks, and stop sharing internet between pc2 and pc3.
Awhile back I was given instructions on how to change the folder standard green folders to new pink folders. Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". I have Windows XP professional with SP2 on an old slow desktop computer connected via 100mb Ethernet Cable to a speedtouch DSL router. I only have two compters on the network. The other computer is a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with Window Vista Home Premium, with all service packs applied. It is connected wireless via the SpeedTouch DSL Router. The XP can Ping the Vista and the Vista can ping the XP. The XP can browse all folders on the vista and open documents and all is well in that direction.
The Vista can see the XP Computer and can see the shared folders on it as well as the printers, but if you try to open the folders that you see, you get an error message that says you probobly don't have the proper security permissions. It hangs there for 3 or 4 minutes before it produces that error...............
I am trying to create remote file sharing among my colleagues. We want to use a desktop (with no wireless connection) with business vista as the server and create all the sharing folders in the desktop. After that, we connect to the desktop through a common workgroup. We have done all the setup but we simply can't remotely connect to the desktop at all. The error msg is 0x80070035 and network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Both running the latest service packs and updates etc. Nothing fancy, just trying to share my collection of music and videos with the laptop. Now, on both machines I can see each shared folder, but can't access them all for some reason. On the Vista pc I'm sharing "Videos" and "Music", and both appear on the XP laptop; however, while Music is brows-able and working fine, for some reason Videos cannot be accessed. I've checked and both Videos and Music have the exact same permissions etc., so I can't figure out why one is accessible and not the other.

I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I can see the laptop on my vista pc network and I can access the laptop files. When I click on folders in my vista machine that I identified to share they show as shared. When I go to my laptop with xp the new pc shows up in network places. However, as soon as I click on the icon for the shared folders I get an access denied -don't have permission to access. On my vista machine I have password protection off , discovery on, public folder on and file sharing on. View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to help someone running Vista Home Premium setup his network to share files and folders with his XP Home laptop. Oddly enough, there are no share options AT ALL. No share buttons or no share options in the context menus -- NOTHING. We've named the network and simply went out to share a printer (which we have the option to share) but it turns itself off. Same in Network and Sharing Center. We turn the options ON and then turn themselves OFF. We've done all the rebooting, etc. and still no go. I have gone through all the disabling of the UAC and ownership and permissions, et. al. but, can't get anywhere without the SHARE OPTION being available. Is his install of Windows Vista Home Premium broken or needing to be reinstalled? Could that be the problem? Could it have been setup improperly? I have successfully done this before on my Vista Business computer and my XP Pro laptop and although i did have a few 'permission' problems, they were at least workable.

I realize this is a Vista group, but I can't seem to locate any MS Win7 group with my NG reader (TB). On my Win7 machine (Win7 Home Premium)I have marked several folders as being shared, and they remain shared at all times, but there is absolutely NO indication of the folder being shared when viewed in Explorer on that computer. In previous versions of the OS there has been the 'palm-up hand" and the little 'whatever it is' in Vista but nothing in Win7. Is it something I have to turn on somewhere, or is it just that Win7 provides no visual indication of sharing on a folder?

I have enabled the necessary sharing rights for the computers and I can access eachother's "Public" folders without a problem. However, using my laptop, I am trying to access the default "Music" folder located on my desktop computer. When I select the music folder on my desktop and click share, it asks "Choose people to share with"...I then click the down arrow next to the "Add" button to choose the laptop computer name but...I don't see the name of my laptop computer to choose. My wife machine has Network descovery on File sharing on (does NOT say a password is required) Public folder sharing on (anyone with network access can open, change
and create).
The public folder share property confirms "everyone" has access write delete access.and If I ask her machine to show me all shared folders - it shows the "public" one.
When look in network places on my machine - I see hers, but when I tray and access I am prompted for password. If I give her machines Admin password (it used to be my machine) I get in to see and access the public folder.
Why is the public folder on her machine not accessible without a password?
Sorry for such a noob question - but it does not seem sensible behaviour.
