Sharing Folders On Network?
May 6, 2009I want to share folders on the network. One folder is the Documents folder. I go through the motion of sharing it and it shows that it is shared.

1)what are the benefits of mapped drive and sharing folders in a home network?
2)which folder cannot be shared? can you think of reason why an operating system might not allow certain types of folders to be shared ?
3)Amapped drive provides apointer to a network resourse,but mapped drive letters are said to be locally signification only.what do you think is meant by locally significant ?
File Sharing/network Discovery On, Private Network, Password Protection Disabled
May 6, 2008I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
Network And Sharing Center Window Show Unidentified Network
May 19, 2008I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
Sharing Xp Folders On XP Using VISTA
Mar 23, 2008I Have a problem that even Microsoft Esculation departmen't cant seem to fix at this time... I have Windows XP professional with SP2 on an old slow desktop computer connected via 100mb Ethernet Cable to a speedtouch DSL router. I only have two compters on the network. The other computer is a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with Window Vista Home Premium, with all service packs applied. It is connected wireless via the SpeedTouch DSL Router. The XP can Ping the Vista and the Vista can ping the XP. The XP can browse all folders on the vista and open documents and all is well in that direction.
The Vista can see the XP Computer and can see the shared folders on it as well as the printers, but if you try to open the folders that you see, you get an error message that says you probobly don't have the proper security permissions. It hangs there for 3 or 4 minutes before it produces that error...............
Sharing Folders The Desktop
Apr 28, 2009I am trying to create remote file sharing among my colleagues. We want to use a desktop (with no wireless connection) with business vista as the server and create all the sharing folders in the desktop. After that, we connect to the desktop through a common workgroup. We have done all the setup but we simply can't remotely connect to the desktop at all. The error msg is 0x80070035 and network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Cannot communicatge with the "Desk Computer Name - ip address" Can someone teach me and show me what is the problem? Don't refer me to another websites because I have already checked and I still don't understand.

Sep 3, 2008I'm trying to set up a wireless network between my Vista x64 PC and an XP laptop. Both running the latest service packs and updates etc. Nothing fancy, just trying to share my collection of music and videos with the laptop. Now, on both machines I can see each shared folder, but can't access them all for some reason. On the Vista pc I'm sharing "Videos" and "Music", and both appear on the XP laptop; however, while Music is brows-able and working fine, for some reason Videos cannot be accessed. I've checked and both Videos and Music have the exact same permissions etc., so I can't figure out why one is accessible and not the other.

Aug 5, 2009I attempted to share the "Documents" folder on my new Vista machine but am apparently doing something wrong. When I check the folders shared, it's listed. But when I check "My Network Places" on the Windows XP" machine on my LAN, all I see is "Users on Xps435mt" (the name of the computer is "Xps435mt"). I've created a target folder under "Documents" into which I want to place a backup copy of a Quicken file that's on the XP machine.

Aug 18, 2008I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.
I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*

May 24, 2008I used easy transfer to move files from an old Xp pc to windows vista pc. I then tried to do shared folders between the new pc and my laptop which is an xp system. I can see the laptop on my vista pc network and I can access the laptop files. When I click on folders in my vista machine that I identified to share they show as shared. When I go to my laptop with xp the new pc shows up in network places. However, as soon as I click on the icon for the shared folders I get an access denied -don't have permission to access. Apr 4, 2009I cannot seem to figure out with my network sharing. I have a wireless network with 2 laptops running Vista home premium and 1 xp-pro laptop all behind a linksys router. At this point I have all computer seeing and sharing (only from public folders) fine. I want to be able to share one of the partitons that I created on one of the Vista laptops(home premuim) as a share for backup, but other Vista laptop won't let me have access to it. It does however let me have access to the public sharing folder though. How can I access this Drive/partition?
Network discovery is on, file sharing is on, printer sharing is on, password protection is on, all computers have same corresponding usernames and passwords, properties of the particular partition in question is configured to share. All computers have the same workgroup name. What I am trying to do, in a nutshell, is to be able to use that one partition for backup images for all 3 computers(has a very large drive on that specific laptop) So I even though about maybe mapping that it into the public sharing folder, a workaround, if you will, but I'm not sure if it would give me the available premissions to be able to do what I need it for.
Cant Get Network Sharing To Work
Jul 3, 2008i have all m network sharing turned on, I have followed a bunch of online tutorials. I still cannot share or recieve files on my vista computer. It works fine for my XP computer, just type in the path and its done. Not so with the Vista machine.

I can see the printer but when I try to print it says it does not the driver. I go to install additional drivers but it won't let it happen. I have a canon MP780 AIO printer. Mar 23, 2008Have Vista Ultimate on 1 machine and XP Pro on the other. Was able to share files from XP to Vista but not, after all the trying, the other way. About a month ago I becan me unable to share either way. Can see each computer from either one. Have been reading various comments from poeple like me who are in the same boat. Have not had a clear indication on what to do. It seems to me that if Microsoft wants to push Vista then they have to catter to us relatively DUMB ones who are going to buy Vista.
Most poeple want to share their misic etc on their network and with the present layout that is not going to happen. It is alright if you are an IT Tech or System Administrator who has trained for this but the average person is not. Maybe all you Brains could come up with a Wizard to help us Dumb poeple out. Have had Vista from the beginning and have never had control of sharing .
Network - Sharing Scanning
Mar 23, 2008I am running Vista Ultimate - my computer is directly networked to the main computer and is set up for printer - file - etc sharing. Attached to the main computer is a Lexmark X5470 multi purpose printer. From my machine I can print with no problem at all , but I cannot get the scanner to operate!. In my network sharing centre - the printers are shown as X 5470 as a printer and also a seperate X 5470 as a Fax.

The wireless is detected and seems to work fine, but when I go to Control Panel>Network & Sharing, the screen opens, but none of the links are ever clickable. and the screen will not respond to the minimize (-) or close (X) buttons. I am logged in to an account with admin rights, and never get a prompt asking for elevation when the network & sharing screen opens.

The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers". I realize this is an old plotter, however the driver installs and works fine in the XP enviroment. Is there any way I can remove this policy?

Feb 6, 2010I am running Vista Business x32 on my laptop & last night everything on my laptop was working fine, and then this morning my wife says she cannot connect to the internet. I go and search for connections, 5 found including my router > hit connect and get a pop up cannot connect,> Diagnose > but still no luck (problem still exists).
So I open up the Network & Sharing Center only to find that it is blank. No network location (public/private), no sharing options, nothing. I noticed that there was an update last night so I system restored back to Monday, but still same problem. I am stumped. Access The Network And Sharing Center
Mar 23, 2008Just recently I turned on my laptop that runs Windows Vista Home premium and it won't identify the network. I haven't changed any of the settings on my laptop and it just started doing this. It will connect to my wireless network, but it says the Access is Local Only. There is a strong signal and everything and my roommate that has the exact same computer has no problem connecting and getting online.
Whenever I access the Network and Sharing Center and click on the red X to find out what the problem is, a window pops up and says "There might be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer. It gives me 3 options for repair: Restart the DHCP client service. Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" I have tried all three of these and none of them work.
