For any individual sub folder I can right click and change the customize properties to detail view, but for the C: drive no such option is aviable. How can I change the view back to details?

Bug In Windows Explorer Can Result In Lost Files

Mar 23, 2008

I believe I've found a bug in Windows Explorer that I can reproduce reliably. If anyone can get this to a QA engineer in the Vista group at Microsoft

1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.

2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".

3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.

4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.

5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........

Folder Options No Longer Appears As A Search Result

Jun 11, 2009

A few months ago, I was messing around with the Windows indexing options , adding folders, etc. and it seems to have screwed up the way Search works. I often need to access Folder Options, and I found the easiest way to do this was by hitting the Start key and typing "Folder" since I'm used to "Launchy" type utilities. However, for some reason, Folder Options no longer appears as a search result. I've rebuilt the index several times and it still doesn't show up. Neither does Programs and Features. I haven't tested every Control Panel utility but these seem to be the only 2 so far that do not show up on Search.

XP Mapped Drive, Not Closing The Connection?

Oct 19, 2007

I have a Vista business machine that is used for Quickbooks. I have the data files in a folder (QBData) and it is shared with full permissions. I am mapping a drive from an XP machine so I can run quickbooks. The mapped drive and access to the files works fine until I close quickbooks and try to reconnect/open. It seems like Vista is not closing the connection correctly as I need to reboot Vista for the XP machine to be able to connect again.

Links Folder Got Moved

Mar 15, 2009

Somehow, my Links folder (the one that contains the "favorite links" in the left panel of an explorer window) got moved into my Pictures folder --> C:Users(my name)PicturesLinks. This must have happened quite some time ago... I think it should be located here: C:Users(my name)Links - correct? If I right click and go into properties, the location tab allows me to move this folder. I get two messages - one asking me if I really want to move the folder and its contents (it's just some shortcuts), and the second if I want to direct the Links folder into another system folder "Profile" located at C:Users(my name). It also says if I proceed with the redirection I will not be able to separate them or restore the default location... I don't quite get what that means...

Your Windows Mailmailbox data is currently being used by another program...............(0x800C0155)"When I click OK I get a window showing "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is there a solution other than repairing Vista again?

Does Not Access Music Folder

Mar 23, 2008

I'm using Vista Enterprise. The Music folder under c:useruser namedocuments is missing. It was there at one time. The shortcut to the music folder is available but it does not access the Music folder. If I right click on Music from Start my options are copy, rename, properties. Selecting properties brings up a general tab that is completely blank. I created a folder called Music but when I install iTunes it says it cannot find the Music folder to add an i Tunes folder. Which is how I discovered the Music folder was missing. Even with the i Tunes folder in Music that I created the Music General tab is still completely blank. How do I fix this? I'd like to continue to use iTunes.

Accessing A Folder In Windows Explorer

Mar 25, 2010

I am using Vista (64-bit) on a desktop, and I am attempting to access/salvage folders on a hard drive from my laptop (that is no longer bootable) in order to copy these files to another device. The old hard drive ran on a Windows 2000 platform, and I am attempting to access a User folder under Documents and Settings. My Vista system tells me that I do not have permission to access this folder. I have right-clicked on this folder to bring up Properties, and it appears that I do have authority. In Windows 2000 one was able to log on as an Administrator, but in Vista I go straight to the desktop at the time of boot. I am sure that this must be handled in User Control, for example, but I am not certain of the procedure.

Windows Explorer Folder View?

Mar 15, 2009

This is about Windows 7, I do not know whether this is an issue in Vista. Seems like Microsoft has undervalued the folder view, maybe even trying to get rid of it. Some time after Windows 98, I think Microsoft improved folder view by allowing a single click on the folder name to expand subfolders underneath. Now with Windows 7, clicking on the default taskbar folder opens with the folder view exposed. Apparently Microsoft again understands how useful folder view is. But, unless I am mistaken, here we go again... Currently I am looking at Windows 7, trying to find the setting to allow single clicking on a folder name in the folder view to expand the folder. Before, it was the same function as clicking on the small plus mark on the left side of the folder name. In the main window of Windows Explorer, you can enable hover to select and a single click to expand the folder, but that IMO sucks when working with files.

Is there a setting in Windows 7 which allows a single click on a folder name in folder view to expand the subfolders underneath that folder in folder view? Or are we stuck once again having to click the small plus sign to the left of the folder name?

Deleted Virtual Music Folder

Feb 28, 2009

I had a similar problem where two virtual music folders in $USERPROFILE% were created, but there was just one in C:\Users$USERPROFILE% I believe that this event occurred because I initially accidentally moved the music virtual folder in $USERPROFILE% to another area, and the 'MUSIC' link in the start menu located it there. However, at the time, since i have only been using Vista for 3 days now, i did not know that virtual folders existed. Thus, thinking that another music folder had been created, and was taking up space in my hard drive, I subsequently deleted the music folder. Consequently, the location of the music folder did not work, but when i tried to fix that up, two virtual music folders showed up in %USERPROFILE%, and only one appeared in C:\Users$USERPROFILE%. I thought this was a registry problem, and decided to take a look at: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

I also looked at the shell folders as well. But, as I am not proficient in registry files, I did not do much except just check that the link for the music folder had not been tampered with, and was showing correctly, $USERPROFILE%Music. By the way, if i had deleted the virtual folder, it would delete the two folders in $USERPROFILE% and the single folder in C:\Users$USERPROFILE%. So, after deleting, relocating, and reading many posts, I believe that I fixed up the problem by following Dzomlija advice. I had also turned off 'Indexing'. So, i turned indexing on, and let the laptop run for the night. Then, i deleted the virtual music folder (there were 3), and rebooted. For some reason, Vista managed to recognise that the virtual folder was missing, and just created it, and my problem was fixed! Although I am still trying to understand Vista, I have learnt that it is not a great idea to always manually edit things.I have created this post because I do not want someone to spend 10 hours on fixing up virtual folders like me.

Windows Explorer: Folder Options 'Restricted'

Mar 6, 2009

I have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)

When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."

However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.

Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.

Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.

Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)

Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.

Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.

Blank Folder Pane In Windows Explorer

Feb 23, 2010

I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")

I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Does anyone have a solution? I'd rather not re-install Vista...PS: The problem seemed to exists in W9x and ME too Windows Explorer-Left Pane Empty - Tech Support Guy Forums and has a fix from MS, to delete a part of the registry, but this does not work for Vista.PS: I've read Brink's information on resetting Folder View settings and tried this to..

Create A Shortcut Of The Music Folder By Dragging It

It gets better, i then decided to delete what i thought was the music folder shortcut located on the desktop and hastily clicked the yes
button to trash it. I'm assuming the file names were too big for the bin, and lost over 1300 songs! I'm just after some answers as to why vista does this? Just FYI, the right way to get it off your desktop is to drag it back to it's default folder.

My Music + Outlook 2007 Folder Corrupted

Sep 2, 2009

The My Music folder has become corrupted - I can't delete, rename or do anything else with it. It's holding about 2000 files hostage. I haven't figured out any way (despite lots of searching) to fix it (chkdsk, etc. did not work). So, I'm considering wiping the machine and reinstalling all drivers back to factory install.

Problem is Office 2007 license was transferred to me by former employer. It's legal, but I don't have the media. I went back to the former employer and asked for discs. After a long battle, they sent me a version of Office that has the other things I need (Excel, Word, PPT and One Note), but it doesn't have Outlook 2007. So, now I have media with valid key for all of Office, except for Outlook. I need Outlook (not express) to sync to my iPhone (which also requires a My Music folder to install iTunes...which is how I got into this mess in the first place!).
