How can I change the Default Folder for Windows Explorer to my E:/ Drive? Because of the work I do, I do not ever use the Default "My Documents" Folder. It gets a little tiresome to always have to get out of the "My Documents" Folder and find my E:/ Drive. Especially when I am working with all of the different website designs and programming.

I would like to be able to use the X32 bit version of IE as my default browser. How can I accomplish this? I have unset this option but Windows Vista still continues remembering the situation I leave each folder. In Tools, Settings, Advanced I have eBooks and eNews library location set to C:Program FilesMobipocket.comMobipocket ReaderLibrary, and I have downloaded My Bookshelf contents there. I can't see this folder or its contents in Windows Explorer, and I can't cd to it or dir its contents in command prompt running as administrator, but yet all of the eBooks that I have downloaded to this location are working normally. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista (64-bit) on a desktop, and I am attempting to access/salvage folders on a hard drive from my laptop (that is no longer bootable) in order to copy these files to another device. The old hard drive ran on a Windows 2000 platform, and I am attempting to access a User folder under Documents and Settings. My Vista system tells me that I do not have permission to access this folder. I have right-clicked on this folder to bring up Properties, and it appears that I do have authority. In Windows 2000 one was able to log on as an Administrator, but in Vista I go straight to the desktop at the time of boot. I am sure that this must be handled in User Control, for example, but I am not certain of the procedure.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is about Windows 7, I do not know whether this is an issue in Vista. Seems like Microsoft has undervalued the folder view, maybe even trying to get rid of it. Some time after Windows 98, I think Microsoft improved folder view by allowing a single click on the folder name to expand subfolders underneath. Now with Windows 7, clicking on the default taskbar folder opens with the folder view exposed. Apparently Microsoft again understands how useful folder view is. But, unless I am mistaken, here we go again... Currently I am looking at Windows 7, trying to find the setting to allow single clicking on a folder name in the folder view to expand the folder. Before, it was the same function as clicking on the small plus mark on the left side of the folder name. In the main window of Windows Explorer, you can enable hover to select and a single click to expand the folder, but that IMO sucks when working with files.
Is there a setting in Windows 7 which allows a single click on a folder name in folder view to expand the subfolders underneath that folder in folder view? Or are we stuck once again having to click the small plus sign to the left of the folder name?
This is easy to do in XP but Vista SP1 still seems to be broken or is it me?

When open the Windows Explorer, Windows Vista always opens the My Documents folder. Can I set to open other folder, e.g. C:/ ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)
When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."
However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.
Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.
Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.
Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)
Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.
Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.
Im running Vista and IE8. Every time I try to move a file from one folder to another, "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut down" appears. Does anyone know how to recify this problem?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Is there a way of doing this in My Computer &/or Windows Explorer? Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. Is there any way to format folder file display for a group of folders (or subfolders) in file manager? I need to be able to do this to display my contacts properly, for example. It looks like you can either format file inforamation display for all the folders or an individual folder (one-at-a-time), but not a group of folders. If this is true, why?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

how to set up a "default" folder for certain windows programs? For EXAMPLE--- I have a special personalized "BITMAP image" folder I especially made just for all my screen saver "custom reflections".......just to use for the windows screensaver classic "3-D TEXT" --- (that many people usually use for the digital CLOCK feature) --- which originally showed up for as one of the screen savers for Windows XP.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI inadvertently said I was using an exchange server and now I am trapped in a never-ending cycle of error messages that will not let me change the server settings to the appropriate pop server. In XP you can go to: Control Panel/Mail/Email Accounts/View or Change Existing accounts, but this option doesn't seem to exist in Vista. Here are the messages I get and the outcomes, I've also attached a couple of screen shots. "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is Unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." At the same time a smaller window is open that says "Configuring Outlook Accounts" The only options presented are to click "X" or "OK" to close the window, once this is done the Microsoft Exchange Window opens with the incorrect server name and account name that I typed in originally. If I try to delete them and click "apply" or "ok" or simply click "X" the following window message appears from Microsoft Outlook:
"Cannot open your default email folders. The file C:/Users/HP/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.ost is not an offline folder file." The options at this point are to click "X" or "Ok" once done the program closes. I have tried uninstalling Office and re-installing, but the Microsoft Exchange Server still remains. I am connected to the internet, all I want to do is change from Exchange Server to pop and supply the necessary pop and smtp information to set-up my email properly. I have been pouring over this for the better part of the day and what's worse is this is for my work email. I am in a remote office, on a laptop, without an IT guy at the moment.

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
