May 28, 2008When using any icons view in explorer.exe with a folder containing MPEG-2 video clips, and/or having the details pane switched on for such folder, explorer.exe eventually uses up all available memory until windows fail to redraw. Restarting explorer.exe or the computer temporarily fixes this problem until all memory is used up again. The problem can be reproduced with folders containing MPEG-2 clips. Other file types do not seem to trigger this behaviour. Aug 2, 2008I have a big problem! Yesterday everything was fine then all of a sudden I could not delete certain files and every time I would open an explorer window another window would open and to finally get to where I want.. I have to open all of these windows very annoying. Also I have never had all the folder options like thumbnail view and so on. Thing is most of this was fine yesterday. I do believe it might have something to do with running CC cleaner because after that all of my setting for explorer were lost. and now I cannot get them back.Then when I tried dragging certain files into other folders I would get a message saying "Target cannot handle this object" I tried in folder options to reset folders also to open folder in same window but nothing. seems Vista is not responding to my requests . I have a UAC tweak installed to minimize vistas requests for confirmation and also had sp1 installed and uninstall ed it but all of this happened before the uninstall of sp1. This started with the cc cleaner so I deleted that don;t trust it anymore seems it has deleted all my vista settings.Also in folder options i do not have the option of viewing thumbnails which is also annoying because I cannot see the photos I want when I want to choose a photo for instance to post on a blog or other.All this is very annoying and the worst of it is that I cannot do a system restore because I have not restore points prior to cc cleaner. shoot what to do?

Mar 23, 2008I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.
Internet Explorer 8 In Vista Causes Windows Explorer
Mar 21, 2009I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
Default Programs
Mar 11, 2010I had a virus a couple of weeks ago and had it removed, but since the removal my computer won't open up any programs without going through default programs. If I click an icon on my desktop default programs pops up and I have to find the right program to open the programs with. I was reading some other posts and saw one that suggested that I download PC Medkit, I did it and it did not work. So now I'm out $40 and my computer still isn't functioning properly. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Jun 17, 2008I've been fiddling with this for more than an hour now and it's driving me nuts. After I installed Vista, I quicky set up WMP cause I wanted to listen to some music. Then a few days later I got around to installing my fav audio and video player (Foobar and KMPlayer). Both work but Vista won't let them open files by default. I tried setting them both as the default program for their respective extensions via in program preferences, but no go. Neither are listed under "Set your default programs". I tried disassociating WMP, but all the boxes under "Set your default programs" are greyed out and I can't change them. I CAN manually set each program (Foobar and KMPlayer) the default choice by right clicking a file -> Open with -> Always use this program.
This way, Vista opens that file with the program chosen every time, the icon changes plus, under "Set your default programs" -> "Windows Media Player" that extension that I changed no longer has a tick next to it. Also, the the empty box is now editable, meaning I can switch the asscociation back to WMP if I want. All other boxes are still greyed out. Both programs can also be chosen manualy for each individual file via Open with. But none of this is a solution. I want WMP to release it's hold on all of its asscociations. So does anyone know, how to disable all asscociations held by WMP so some other program can grab them? I've been at it now for like forever and I'm kinda fed up with it. If anyone needs any additional info, just ask.
