View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I must have deleted one of my windows mail programs. I have Windows Mail (News) but not the other one, Windows Mail. I can use the windows mail to send and receive mail but when I click on an email address from the internet, it says that it can't do that because the default mail client is not properly installed. I've been to the control panel and when I go to default programs, I only get Windows Mail (News) to show up. I can go into options within the mail program and set it to
be the defaut mail handler, but as soon as I close the window after hitting apply and ok, it reverts to the other setting. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I don't want to reformat the hard drive as I have too much work on it and no time to back up at this point.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Ultimate and am using Thunderbird mail client. When I click a mailto link in Internet Explorer I get this error message: "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed". I have reset my default programs, uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird, and switched my default mail client to Windows Mail and still the same result. On searching the web I can only find solutions for Windows XP, Outlook and Outlook Express. Anyone know what the deal is with Vista and Thunderbird rendering this error? And BTW I have the same setup on another computer and the mailto links work fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running IE 7 under Vista Home Premium 64 bit with SP1. I made Yahoo my home page and want to make Yahoo Mail my default email client instead of Outlook or Windows Mail. However, when I get to the window where I can select my default programs, Yahoo is not listed. According to Yahoo Help, as long as the Yahoo Toolbar is loaded (it is), Yahoo
Mail should be in the list. I've tried loading the toolbar several times, but it jes' ain't there.
I've had no luck at all using Windows Mail. I've been everywhere looking for soultions. All the solutions were vialbe for setting up an account with AOL. As far as that goes, everything is fine except receiving sent mail. I get no error messages when sending. I can send to AOL and it arrives. When I send to gmail, it never arrives and yet there is no error message. After weeks of trying that is the end result. The other problem is that when Windows Mail takes my AOL mail it does not leave a copy at AOL. As a result, all AOL mail is currently stored in Windows Mail, which is the only way I can access it. Thus my question: Is it possible to some how return my AOL mail back to AOL from Windows Mail?

Outlook is NOT listed in the default programs section of the Vista control panel, nor is it listed as a program in "Program and Features." And yet it is on my computer and has been working just fine for 9 months. I need to make Outlook the default so I can sync it with my iPhone.

I'm a bit stumped about where to go next. NB: I had to reset my computer back to factory settings in July as I lost sound following the service pack 2 download. I can't email photo's or send links for webpages. Also in the set default programs it has windows mail (news) as my default.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Note:
Control panel does show Windows mail as being the Default Newsgroup handler.
every time it opens it says its not the default. I can go to options and click make default which it accepts but after presing OK and reopening options it says again it is not the default mail handler I had thought that this ptoblem was linked to have outlook installed I have uninstalled this now and rebnooted but the problem persists linked to this problem perhaps is the fact that internet options only sees windows mail as a news handler

Is downloading "Windows Live" and uninstalling my "Windows Mail" a solution?
I have all my mail forwarded to Hotmail, so I wouldn't lose saved messages.
I am using a laptop with Win Vista and Outlook 2007. I have set Outlook to the the default mail handler (both in Start/Default Programs and in Tools/Options in Outlook). Yet, when I start Windows Mail and look under its Tools/Options menu, it shows that "this application is the default mail handler"! In other words, both programs seem to treat themselves as the default ones. This is a problem because whenever I try to install the Plaxo Windows toolbar, it adds it to Windows Mail (not Outlook, which is the program I use and want to be the SINGLE default mailer).

The Go-News menu function in Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium SP1 will NOT call any other newsreader other than Windows Mail, even when the other news reader is set as default.(Ie it opens when external news links are clicked). This is in direct contradiction to Outlook 2007 on XP.
i have tried to correct the windows mail challenge I am having on Vista. I found an old post and it suggested going into control panel and looking to see what the MailTo protocol is. It does not exist and that may be the challenge. I have checked for defaults and Windows mail and IE have all defaults set. I then looked for the windows mail protocol. It does not exist. I see windows mail in the far right on a couple of items but no protocol. Could this be because I put Office 07 in along with 03. It didn't work. I had hoped to have both available. 03 for now work and 07 to leisurely learn all the changes. I took 07 out and had to reinstall 03. That all works but email link embedded into a link tells me my mail client is not properly installed. I have a thread further down, but it is not being answered and so I am probably in trouble for starting a new one. How do I get the protocol in there?
