Windows Mail The ONLY Default Newsreader Called By Outlook

The Go-News menu function in Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium SP1 will NOT call any other newsreader other than Windows Mail, even when the other news reader is set as default.(Ie it opens when external news links are clicked).This is in direct contradiction to Outlook 2007 on XP.

Aug 13, 2009I can't seem to set Outlook as my default mail client. I've checked the default box in Outlook but it keeps reverting to Windows Mail. Outlook is NOT listed in the default programs section of the Vista control panel, nor is it listed as a program in "Program and Features." And yet it is on my computer and has been working just fine for 9 months. I need to make Outlook the default so I can sync it with my iPhone.

Mar 23, 2008When I boot up in the morning, I have to wait 20 to 30 mins before Outlook 07 will connect to my Exchange 2003 server. Until then, when I try to open Outlook it says, cannot open the default e-mail folders. And it suggests there is a network issue or that the Exchange server is down. These are not the case. The Exchange server is up and there are no network issues. I have many other computers attached to the network and none of them have this issue. Some our XP Pro/Office 07, some are XP Pro/Office 2003. The big difference with my machine is that it is Vista.
After about 20 to 30 minutes, wow! it connects! And then it's good for the rest of the day. I usually only minimize Outlook after I actually get it open so the connection is maintained throughout the day. I'm not sure what would happen if I closed it completely. But one thing is for sure, every morning, it takes 20 to 30 minutes before it will connect. Eventually, it always connects.
Outlook: Mail Handler Default Option
Dec 29, 2007I am using a laptop with Win Vista and Outlook 2007. I have set Outlook to the the default mail handler (both in Start/Default Programs and in Tools/Options in Outlook). Yet, when I start Windows Mail and look under its Tools/Options menu, it shows that "this application is the default mail handler"! In other words, both programs seem to treat themselves as the default ones. This is a problem because whenever I try to install the Plaxo Windows toolbar, it adds it to Windows Mail (not Outlook, which is the program I use and want to be the SINGLE default mailer).

Mar 7, 2009I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

Aug 9, 2009I've tried using Control Panel where I can't find Windows Mail as an option for default e-mail handler.
Tried changing by accessing Properties from Windows Mail but when I change to "Make this the defalut e-mail handler, apply and save then exit and return to Properties the setting has returned to Not the default e-mail handler.
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Note:
Control panel does show Windows mail as being the Default Newsgroup handler.

Mar 29, 2009every time it opens it says its not the default. I can go to options and click make default which it accepts but after presing OK and reopening options it says again it is not the default mail handler I had thought that this ptoblem was linked to have outlook installed I have uninstalled this now and rebnooted but the problem persists linked to this problem perhaps is the fact that internet options only sees windows mail as a news handler

I have gone into tools and "set as default" but it doesn't stay, so I went online to find an answer - I got some great help from an earlier post but when I went into Default programs - set program access and computer default - custom I find "use my current email program" but no tick boxes for enable access to this program.
I'm a bit stumped about where to go next. NB: I had to reset my computer back to factory settings in July as I lost sound following the service pack 2 download. I can't email photo's or send links for webpages. Also in the set default programs it has windows mail (news) as my default.

May 19, 2010The wife has a box with 64bit Vista and someone ran a registery cleaner on it and cleaned the registery so clean that the system would not start windows. It went through the screen that gave the choices for set-up, recovery, etc then the safe, normal, etc start screen and regardless of what chose it would go dark and windows would never start but the activity light would keep flickering showing it was trying to do something. I took it in and repair used the recovery disk to set it back to factory setup!! :-(Is it possible to make a to make a recovery disk (as the factory labeled it) of the way I get it set that would be like the factory recovery disk which has a rcd.dat file and an image directory on disk 1 and a rcd2.dat file and an image directory on disk 2 so if the thing crashed again at the startup options screen that has the recovery option I could just use my home made recovery disk instead of the factory ones??
I know I can make a backup but if the system will not get past the screen with the recovery option what good are they. Will accept any comments on backups as long as I can also get an answer to the original recovery disk question also. Would be nice if I could do this on wife Vista box AND my XP box.

Jul 29, 2009my ISP is Charter, but I do not use charter for my email. I use AOL. My parents have AOL and I have a screen name that I use b/c I have had that email for years. I am trying to set up my Windows Mail (I think this is basically outlook???) I typed in my pop3/smtp and so on. It then prompted me to log in so windows could verify and proceed on. Well, I did my AOL screenname and password and it is not working. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I just can't seem to get my AOL mail into outlook so I can use just outlook.

When I create email using Send To and start typing in the TO block, it will recognize two or three of the addresses in my address book but not the whole list of A's, B's, or whatever. Jun 13, 2008I've just upgraded to a new pc with vista and windows mail from Xp & outlook express (with virgin). To save my files and emails etc I used windows easy transfer software and copied the files to an external hard drive and then loaded it to the new PC. I initially had problems as my modem didn't install but virgin sent me a wireless connector and all seemed OK. However, when I click on send/receive mail I get an error message 'some errors occured while processing the requsted tasks - please see details below.' But there are no details! I have 3 email addresses.
If I click on the little arrow next to send/rec and then click on each email separately there is no problem. Equally, if I click on 'receive all' there is no problem. When I click on send/rec the first time I open windows mail there is no problem, but thereafter always the error message. I've had Virgin remotely controlling the pc for 90 minutes and they can't suss it!
Also, bizarrely at the top of the page it says inbox - outlook express provided by virgin net even though I appear to be running windows mail (it certainly isn't the usual outlook I have on my old pc). Did I inadvertently load outlook as well as my emails on top of windows mail and they've kind of merged?

Windows Mail just seems so slow and klugy by comparison--and the Calendar is also usable, but annoying. What do you all think? Outlook worth the investment for someone who is a heavy user with their own business?
