Oct 31, 2009I have Vista Home Premium on an Acer Laptop and all was fine until I decided to change my user password. I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.

May 24, 2008I am considering a repair install for sometime in the future if I can't get the misc. issues fixed. I could do a clean install but wouldn't learn much that way.
Premium on P1 is the manufacturer's preinstalled OS from which I have removed the bloatware, cleaned it up & installed SP1 but am left with a few quirky behaviors.
sfc /scannow doesn't find any integrity violations. I have a Vista SP1 install DVD with all versions and the Upgrade/repair option is available in Premium using this DVD, I checked. I've read the tutorial but just double checking to be sure. I have everything imaged with Acronis but still wouldn't want to get into restoring the images.
A repair install should only make changes to the Premium OS on P1? I may have to repair my triple boot? (I'm using EasyBCD)

Nov 29, 2009My friend at work forgot his password and cannot log onto his computer. He is running Windows vista home premium on a Compaq laptop. We tried to go into the safe mode but the only screen we get is his password sign on screen. Even during boot we pressed f8 key but the password screen came up. He is hoping someone has an idea or answer so he can avoid taking it into get looked at and paying money.

My friend said he paid $10 for shipping of the 64 home edition but paid no other cost. do i have to pay for a $160 upgrade to 64 or can i also pay $10 since i have a purchased copy of 32 vista? I have heard that all versions of the 64 bit upgrade are on the same cd, so I should be able to install premium 64 from my friends home 64 cd. Correct? what is the crap i have read about having to have full version of XP to upgrade to 64 vista....does this sound pretty stupid to anyone else...considering if a new copy of vista was bought, you obviously did not purchase XP.....

Mar 11, 2010I had a virus a couple of weeks ago and had it removed, but since the removal my computer won't open up any programs without going through default programs. If I click an icon on my desktop default programs pops up and I have to find the right program to open the programs with. I was reading some other posts and saw one that suggested that I download PC Medkit, I did it and it did not work. So now I'm out $40 and my computer still isn't functioning properly. Today I open a document and went to print it. My default was on an Ebson printer but this morning the default had changed all by itself to, get this, a copy of on of my HP printers. I look deeper and all of my HP printers have make copies of themself called (copy 1) I did not do this and I did not change my default printer.

Jun 17, 2008I've been fiddling with this for more than an hour now and it's driving me nuts. After I installed Vista, I quicky set up WMP cause I wanted to listen to some music. Then a few days later I got around to installing my fav audio and video player (Foobar and KMPlayer). Both work but Vista won't let them open files by default. I tried setting them both as the default program for their respective extensions via in program preferences, but no go. Neither are listed under "Set your default programs". I tried disassociating WMP, but all the boxes under "Set your default programs" are greyed out and I can't change them. I CAN manually set each program (Foobar and KMPlayer) the default choice by right clicking a file -> Open with -> Always use this program.
This way, Vista opens that file with the program chosen every time, the icon changes plus, under "Set your default programs" -> "Windows Media Player" that extension that I changed no longer has a tick next to it. Also, the the empty box is now editable, meaning I can switch the asscociation back to WMP if I want. All other boxes are still greyed out. Both programs can also be chosen manualy for each individual file via Open with. But none of this is a solution. I want WMP to release it's hold on all of its asscociations. So does anyone know, how to disable all asscociations held by WMP so some other program can grab them? I've been at it now for like forever and I'm kinda fed up with it. If anyone needs any additional info, just ask.

Oct 14, 2008It use to be when I would open something it would put icons on the task bar on the right hand side. It would only show two at a time and you could Click the arrow to scroll through. All of a sudden it stopped doing that and it adds them on the left and shows all the programs. Any ideas how to get it back?

Mar 28, 2009I got a new system (AMD Athlon Dual Core, 3GHz, Vista Home Premium, 500GB SATA HDD), installed a new SATA drive (250GB), and installed WinXP on the new drive (I undid all the cable to the Vista drive first). Now, I can boot off Vista or XP, but the default system is XP. I have to go to the Boot menu to bring Vista up. Is there a way to set the Vista drive as the default drive? Can I simply switch the drive cables? The jumpers no longer do Master/Slave, so I'm not sure on this. (BTW, when I boot up in Vista, and use a boot up controller program like Easy BCD, it does not show XP as a boot option).
