Is there any way to format folder file display for a group of folders (or subfolders) in file manager? I need to be able to do this to display my contacts properly, for example. It looks like you can either format file inforamation display for all the folders or an individual folder (one-at-a-time), but not a group of folders. If this is true, why?

In Tools, Settings, Advanced I have eBooks and eNews library location set to C:Program FilesMobipocket.comMobipocket ReaderLibrary, and I have downloaded My Bookshelf contents there. I can't see this folder or its contents in Windows Explorer, and I can't cd to it or dir its contents in command prompt running as administrator, but yet all of the eBooks that I have downloaded to this location are working normally. What is happening? I'd like to manually back up these files to a cd. How do I do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista (64-bit) on a desktop, and I am attempting to access/salvage folders on a hard drive from my laptop (that is no longer bootable) in order to copy these files to another device. The old hard drive ran on a Windows 2000 platform, and I am attempting to access a User folder under Documents and Settings. My Vista system tells me that I do not have permission to access this folder. I have right-clicked on this folder to bring up Properties, and it appears that I do have authority. In Windows 2000 one was able to log on as an Administrator, but in Vista I go straight to the desktop at the time of boot. I am sure that this must be handled in User Control, for example, but I am not certain of the procedure.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is about Windows 7, I do not know whether this is an issue in Vista. Seems like Microsoft has undervalued the folder view, maybe even trying to get rid of it. Some time after Windows 98, I think Microsoft improved folder view by allowing a single click on the folder name to expand subfolders underneath. Now with Windows 7, clicking on the default taskbar folder opens with the folder view exposed. Apparently Microsoft again understands how useful folder view is. But, unless I am mistaken, here we go again... Currently I am looking at Windows 7, trying to find the setting to allow single clicking on a folder name in the folder view to expand the folder. Before, it was the same function as clicking on the small plus mark on the left side of the folder name. In the main window of Windows Explorer, you can enable hover to select and a single click to expand the folder, but that IMO sucks when working with files.
Is there a setting in Windows 7 which allows a single click on a folder name in folder view to expand the subfolders underneath that folder in folder view? Or are we stuck once again having to click the small plus sign to the left of the folder name?
This is easy to do in XP but Vista SP1 still seems to be broken or is it me?

It gets a little tiresome to always have to get out of the "My Documents" Folder and find my E:/ Drive. Especially when I am working with all of the different website designs and programming.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)
When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."
However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.
Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.
Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.
Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)
Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.
Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.
When I run Windows Explorer, the Documents folder is open. More often than not, I want something within c:program files, so I have to scroll to that. Counting the click to close Documents, it takes four mouse clicks.Can I set it to open Program Files, and show all the subfolders beneath it? Perhaps a registry tweak or a freeware utility program?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Does anyone have a solution? Is there a way of doing this in My Computer &/or Windows Explorer? Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. If Windows won't allow this simple request, is there some 3rd Party Utility available?

I've shut down IE, rebooted the machine and gone to Windows Explorer to delete this thing, but cannot. When I went to see if it was a read-only file, it was. But when I go to make it a non read-only file, I get the following message, "This is no longer located in the c:usersfavorites - verify the items and try again." Also I get this message "The system cannot find the file specified" ...I found this file in four other locations, and deleted them all. But still, I cannot get rid of it in the Favorites...

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium edition. Earlier today, a new problem started to occur. Each time I close a folder, I get a message telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working. It then restarts and things appear fine. I can do everything as normal on the computer, but if I try to close a folder again, same error message.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

In an attempt to solve a problem with an MS Office document, I went into Task Manager/Processes and closed Explorer.exe. It closed Office, but more importantly, it also closed my whole Desktop Shell!!! Now everything's gone, including my Start Menu and Task Bar. How can I get it all back?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get the File Transfer Manager program to work with Vista SP1. The only way I can get it to work is if I turn off UAC. Otherwise I receive an error "Unable to open file on client". I found the "workaround" about creating a folder, but this doesn't work. I've tried both the ActiveX install, and manually downloading and installing FTM. (The manual download route doesn't work with UAC on or off.) Also with UAC on, the program won't save any settings. (Also turned off popup blocking), and the ActiveX settings in IE7 are correct. (Looked at during a tech support call). So, what am I missing? Gotta be a way to make it work with UAC on....?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI lost my desktop and Task Manager. I could still see my start menu. I followed instructions on the forum to enable my Task Manager again using the admin cmd prompt and running a script ws... vbs something. Now I have Task Manager but when I click File, the only choice I have is Exit Task Manager. I thought that if I kill the process Explorer.exe and restart it, it will restore my desktop icons and the task bar at the bottom of my screen. I killed the process but couldn't restart it. I did a shutdown from Task Manager, but on reboot the problem still exists. I already tried system restore and have run a full norton scan.

I find that some apps use the windows protocol and it is annoying having to change it there too. I was able to do it in XP and 2000 but it is not as intuitive in Vista.I want it to sort by name and I would like some other view tabs instead of what's displayed. I know how to do that by adding sort (tabs) by right clicking but how do I make it universal and how do I make it stay that way?
View 6 Replies View Relatedif i open say My Documents or My Computer to open a file a second explorer.exe decides to show up in task manager and is slightly larger in size compared to the original one. The first one currently sits there at roughly about 11,500k When the second one comes along its about 15,000k in size and the window takes about 2-4 seconds to load/display folders etc sometimes longer. It also becomes larger every window you open resulting in slower load times. From the task manager, if i close the smaller of the two explorer.exe's naturally the whole task bar at the bottom closes and you can't access the start menu etc.
But, if i close the other, slightly larger explorer.exe, it just closes that window.
I have run several anti-virus scans, spyware scans etc and have all returned nothing, so i am assuming that it might be somehting that has slipped through my scanners un-seen unless this is normal behaviour that i have not noticed before. Also lately my CPU usage had been fluxuating a lot between 0% and 20% when no windows are open, it can also shoot up to between 80% - 90% when opening a window and will then resume its fluxuating idle state until i open or close another window or file. If i click "Show process from all users" in the task manager another problem i see that might be related or compleetly seperate is displayed. I have 16 svchost.exe's, yes thats right, 16.... (screenshot available) they all range in size the largest being roughly 50,000k and the smallest being 200k. This can't be normal?
I have had installed a Pentium D Extreme Edition 840 3.2 Gig CPU, in Device Manager it lists four CPU's, two as Pentium D 3.2 and Two as P4 3.2, is this what should be showing, or has the tech missed something in installing?
