Im running Vista and IE8. Every time I try to move a file from one folder to another, "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut down" appears. Does anyone know how to recify this problem?

It looks like you can either format file inforamation display for all the folders or an individual folder (one-at-a-time), but not a group of folders. If this is true, why?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to copy/cut and paste (or even DELETE from desktop or wherever) (CTRL X, CTRL C, then CTRL V) or, even by right-clicking methods, I get the typical dialogue box: "Moving items...," "Deleting items...," etc.
The problem is that sometimes, only sometimes the documents move or are copied. Sometimes, (usually about 80% of the time) they do NOT. The dialogue box that states what's going on just freezes & hangs forever..............
Fully patched Vista - I can reproduce every time. When I attempt to move files by dragging from one folder to the next within Explorer, it crashes.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSorry, I could not find the correct place to post this. Basically some how I accidently moved my Contacts folder into my Windows folder. Now the Windows folder template has dissapeared and in place of it is the Contact template, when I open it i can add and remove contacts but inside the folder is all of the Windows sub folders. How do I get this back to normal please, I am afraid someone else will hop on my computer and carelesly delete my contacts folder which contains all those subfolders. I did try one result i saw about going into regedit and deleting those "Bag" files but they didnt work.

In Tools, Settings, Advanced I have eBooks and eNews library location set to C:Program FilesMobipocket.comMobipocket ReaderLibrary, and I have downloaded My Bookshelf contents there. I can't see this folder or its contents in Windows Explorer, and I can't cd to it or dir its contents in command prompt running as administrator, but yet all of the eBooks that I have downloaded to this location are working normally. What is happening? I'd like to manually back up these files to a cd. How do I do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista (64-bit) on a desktop, and I am attempting to access/salvage folders on a hard drive from my laptop (that is no longer bootable) in order to copy these files to another device. The old hard drive ran on a Windows 2000 platform, and I am attempting to access a User folder under Documents and Settings. My Vista system tells me that I do not have permission to access this folder. I have right-clicked on this folder to bring up Properties, and it appears that I do have authority. In Windows 2000 one was able to log on as an Administrator, but in Vista I go straight to the desktop at the time of boot. I am sure that this must be handled in User Control, for example, but I am not certain of the procedure.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is about Windows 7, I do not know whether this is an issue in Vista. Seems like Microsoft has undervalued the folder view, maybe even trying to get rid of it. Some time after Windows 98, I think Microsoft improved folder view by allowing a single click on the folder name to expand subfolders underneath. Now with Windows 7, clicking on the default taskbar folder opens with the folder view exposed. Apparently Microsoft again understands how useful folder view is. But, unless I am mistaken, here we go again... Currently I am looking at Windows 7, trying to find the setting to allow single clicking on a folder name in the folder view to expand the folder. Before, it was the same function as clicking on the small plus mark on the left side of the folder name. In the main window of Windows Explorer, you can enable hover to select and a single click to expand the folder, but that IMO sucks when working with files.
Is there a setting in Windows 7 which allows a single click on a folder name in folder view to expand the subfolders underneath that folder in folder view? Or are we stuck once again having to click the small plus sign to the left of the folder name?
This is easy to do in XP but Vista SP1 still seems to be broken or is it me?

When open the Windows Explorer, Windows Vista always opens the My Documents folder. Can I set to open other folder, e.g. C:/ ?

It gets a little tiresome to always have to get out of the "My Documents" Folder and find my E:/ Drive. Especially when I am working with all of the different website designs and programming.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)
When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."
However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.
Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.
Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.
Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)
Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.
Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.
When I run Windows Explorer, the Documents folder is open. More often than not, I want something within c:program files, so I have to scroll to that. Counting the click to close Documents, it takes four mouse clicks.Can I set it to open Program Files, and show all the subfolders beneath it? Perhaps a registry tweak or a freeware utility program?

This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Is there a way of doing this in My Computer &/or Windows Explorer? Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. I've shut down IE, rebooted the machine and gone to Windows Explorer to delete this thing, but cannot. When I went to see if it was a read-only file, it was. But when I go to make it a non read-only file, I get the following message, "This is no longer located in the c:usersfavorites - verify the items and try again." It then restarts and things appear fine. I can do everything as normal on the computer, but if I try to close a folder again, same error message.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

I'm still not familiar with many of the basic functions in Vista, but I'm pretty good at figuring things out. However, I just installed 2 of my old hard drives from my old computer (which lost its motherboard), and so now I have 3 hard drives. When I was looking at my files in one of the old hard drives, let's call it J:, I found that items had been moved around. They were in a specific order and now things have been moved since opening the HD with Vista. I already tried dragging and dropping the items to put them back in order. Only 1/4 of them are out of order, but when I try to drag and drop, it appears I can drag, but not drop. The file does not move to the new place where I drop it in the same folder. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does Vista not allow the flexibility of moving contents inside a folder? I really need these items to be put in the correct order. They are not in alphabetical. How do I do this very simple fuction? I will probably have figured it out by the time someone answers this, but then again I haven't yet, so I'm hoping for someone who can tell me how to do this very easy thing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista 64 bit with SP1. I have files on the drive that were copied from when I had XP installed (installed vista on a second partition). I am trying to move them to a different folder. Can't do it no matter what it says I don't have permission. I am logged in under Administrator, and I have made sure the account is enabled (I added it since it was installed under a different name and got rid of the old one)
No matter what I do nothing will give me permission. I have tried everything - used a registry change to add the 'move to' to the menu, I have gotten the 'run as administrator in the menu now, I have turned UAC off. I have tried changing permissions, I have tried taking off the read only (I don't know if maybe in XP it was already set to read only?), I have tried the DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS thing, and I have tried the tutorial here of taking ownership of the file and adding it to the menu (When I try to run the file through the elevated command prompt it gives me the access denied box again.) The only thing I can get to work is copying the file which is not an option as I have hundreds of gbs to move. I'm only trying to move it to a different place on the same drive. I also tried copying with testdisk because when I copied files before to a different drive it was so fast but for some reason now it barely moves.
