Move Drive To Different Folder, Don't Have Permission
Nov 18, 2009
I am using Vista 64 bit with SP1. I have files on the drive that were copied from when I had XP installed (installed vista on a second partition). I am trying to move them to a different folder. Can't do it no matter what it says I don't have permission. I am logged in under Administrator, and I have made sure the account is enabled (I added it since it was installed under a different name and got rid of the old one)
No matter what I do nothing will give me permission. I have tried everything - used a registry change to add the 'move to' to the menu, I have gotten the 'run as administrator in the menu now, I have turned UAC off. I have tried changing permissions, I have tried taking off the read only (I don't know if maybe in XP it was already set to read only?), I have tried the DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS thing, and I have tried the tutorial here of taking ownership of the file and adding it to the menu (When I try to run the file through the elevated command prompt it gives me the access denied box again.) The only thing I can get to work is copying the file which is not an option as I have hundreds of gbs to move. I'm only trying to move it to a different place on the same drive. I also tried copying with testdisk because when I copied files before to a different drive it was so fast but for some reason now it barely moves.

Vista now will not install new programs. I get a warning box saying the temp folder is on a drive that is full or that I do not have write permission for. The temp file is where? It is on the C drive, which is nearly empty, and I am logged on as the administrator. What a pile of c***.

Sorry, I could not find the correct place to post this. Basically some how I accidently moved my Contacts folder into my Windows folder. Now the Windows folder template has dissapeared and in place of it is the Contact template, when I open it i can add and remove contacts but inside the folder is all of the Windows sub folders. How do I get this back to normal please, I am afraid someone else will hop on my computer and carelesly delete my contacts folder which contains all those subfolders. I did try one result i saw about going into regedit and deleting those "Bag" files but they didnt work.

All of a sudden I'm getting an error message saying I don't have permission to save files in the Download folder in Vista Ultimate SP1, using IE 7, and to contact the administrator for permission. I'm the only one using the puter and it's never done this before today. What went wrong and how do I fix it?

I have Vista Home Premium, I am trying to add a Maxtor Shared Stroage II 320 GB Hard drive that is networked connected. I have installed the supplied software. The drive is up and running. I can access the drive but anytime I try to Move, Copy or send any file to the drive I get the following: "Destination Folder Access Denied, You need permission to perform this action." I have been on the phone with Seagate for hours, they have never seen this before. I have shut off my firewall, USC, Antivirus but no help.

It used to be when I wanted to move a folder in Win XP I'd "cut" the file, click the new location, and "paste". The folder would move to the new place and leave nothing behind. I now have a new Vista computer. I do the same thing and it copies the falls, but it leaves some or all of the old copies behind. How do I do a "move" not a "copy" ?

I tried to move the "My Documents" folder in my Widows Vista Ultimate and clicked wrongly. After cacelling the move of files, something went wrong. I have made a folder named Docs to hold all my documents. But when I right click on the documents folder, which now is pointing at C:USERS, there is no location tab.

I just got a Vista Premium computer, 64 bit with an AMD Phenom 9100 processor. I'm still not familiar with many of the basic functions in Vista, but I'm pretty good at figuring things out. However, I just installed 2 of my old hard drives from my old computer (which lost its motherboard), and so now I have 3 hard drives. When I was looking at my files in one of the old hard drives, let's call it J:, I found that items had been moved around. They were in a specific order and now things have been moved since opening the HD with Vista. I already tried dragging and dropping the items to put them back in order. Only 1/4 of them are out of order, but when I try to drag and drop, it appears I can drag, but not drop. The file does not move to the new place where I drop it in the same folder. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does Vista not allow the flexibility of moving contents inside a folder? I really need these items to be put in the correct order. They are not in alphabetical. How do I do this very simple fuction? I will probably have figured it out by the time someone answers this, but then again I haven't yet, so I'm hoping for someone who can tell me how to do this very easy thing.

my machine says I need to permission to move a folder to another? It first says "I'll need to provide admin permission to move this folder", then I see a file operation window, then another You need permission window with a try again and cancel button. Whats going on here? This UAC is proving to be more anoying then good. I'm pretty sure it's why I could not connect to a FTP server through a game to download an update.

As a very new Vista user (about 5 hours!) I want to move my Documents folder to another partition. In XP I just right-clicked on My Documents and in the Properties window there was a "move" option. Can't see anything like that in Vista Home
Premium. Is there?

I have recently changed a folder name to an alt code which shows up as a blank space. It shows up as this without parenthesis.() Now that I've done that I can't move the file to anywhere, rename it, and I can't delete too. I right click it and hit delete but no confirmation comes up asking if I want to or not. No message saying it's in use or anything. If I try to rename it it reverts back to the invisible characters. I also can't move the file to anywhere else from my desktop. I've been trying for awhile now can't do anything with it

my emails would get marked as read or automatically move to the deleted folder when deleted. Instead, they remain BOLD black until I exit the inbox THEN return. At that point, the messages are either marked as read or have been deleted. It is weird nothing was changed by me! The box "Mark as read" is set to 0 seconds and that never changed. It's annoying to have to click on EVERY message in order to get it read and then delete what I want, move to the next message, delete it, etc.......exit the folder, then return to it for the messages to be corrected.

Recently replaced an ACER factory load with a clean install of VISTA Home Preimum. My HD has 3 partitions C (228gb), D (227gb), and hidden (9gb). Would like to get rid of the hidden (ACER factory load ). My HD is 500 GB and my total use is 51 GB on C. Would it make sense to create 3 partitions C (small) for Vista and applications, D (small) for data and E (whats left) for whatever.
Is it possible / pratical to move the entire User folder to D or would this actually cause more future trouble than it is worth. Can any of this be done with Disk Management (when I right click on the hidden I get no options) or is a third party solution required ? Or should I just leave well enough alone

I am having problems trying to figure how to get vista on a 400g SATA drive. I have tried with both 32 and 64. When I boot from the disk and do a custom install.. the drive just is not there. So I gave up on that and plugged in a smaller IDE drive and of course Vista installs no problem and guess what.. I can now use my Large Sata. Problem is that Vista runs extremly slow on the IDE. how I can move Vista to the SATA drive or at least do a fresh install to it, then I could transfer my settings.

I just bought a DV4t laptop from HP. Due to the hard drive heating up problems with this particular laptop, I went out and bought a 60GB SSD which runs a lot cooler. Is there a way to move the Vista x64 Home Premium to the new SSD drive? I thought about reinstalling the OS from scratch, but the HP system does not come with a Windows disk, just a recover disk that will fill up most of the SSD space with bloatware.

I have a folder that I delete periodically and replace with a folder from another computer on my home network. The problem is a message that I get when I attempt to delete the folder - "You need permission to perform this action." Permissions all show full control. I'm attempting to delete it with an administrator account and I've attempted to run MS Explorer as administrator and still can't delete the folder. What is odd to me is I can delete the folder if I log off and log back in again as the same user. Is there anything I can do so I don't have to go through the process of logging off and back in again?

My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

I tried using a tweak to move my "user files" folder's to "my documents" folder left from the XP OS which was on another partition on my hard drive, it didn't work well so I reversed everything. Now every time I click on "contacts", the "my documents" folder opens up which now shows as a shortcut in my Vista's "user files". My Contacts folder (which is empty) is still in the "user files" folder. However, I cannot open Contacts by a shortcut or within the Windows mail.
I checked the Contacts shortcut in the Start Menu and it points to ""%Program Files%Windows Mailwab.exe", so it seems that wab.exe is messed up. Is there a registry tweak or a similar trick to correct this?

I am trying to download a game file I bought. It is an .exe file. No matter what folder I try to save it to, even if I try to save to a flash drive, the computer tells me "You need permission to perform this action." I can "Try Again" or "Cancel" but Try Again only brings up the same message. I am running from the administrator account. I have already tried shutting off User 'Access Control'
How am I supposed to give myself permission to do this? I've already tried going to Internet options and making sure it is on default... and it is. Please help, not sure what else to do.

I am using Robocopy to backup photos and music files to a local network connected 1TB Western Digital drive. The initial backup worked for both tasks. This is the command line in the .bat Robocopy C:UsersOwnerMusic ecordings \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordings /S /COPYT /MIR /Log:MusicBkupLog.txt Now, the subsequent backup for my music folders fails on a specific folder with error: ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Deleting Extra File \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordingsAmbroseNewA Fine Romance-Browne.mp3 Access is denied. The process stops there. Subsequent folders are not backed up. The ownership for that folder looks suspect: nobody (Unix User obody)
Other folders that work have owner as: administrator (EXTERNALDRIVEadmin) I can not change the offending folder's owner. I have tried the following as administrator: Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:BackUp- MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew RMDIR /S S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew I get access denied. I can access the directory so my path must be correct: dir S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew How can I change ownership or delete the offending folder?
