Is there a way of doing this in My Computer &/or Windows Explorer? Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. If Windows won't allow this simple request, is there some 3rd Party Utility available?

This folder is the Windows Error Reporting queue. I have been having some trouble with Windows Update and a few other Vista things, but my problems can't be so interesting that it takes 16 GB to describe them. I only found it with a freeware program called WinDirStat. Explorer didn't show it in any folder. I just deleted it all and so far so good. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy external 500gb drive is being used for both Vista File Backup and Complete PC Backup. It says I now have only 70gb free on the drive? I'm puzzled on the disk usage. My file backups go into a folder under the PC-Name folder called Backup Set 2007-08-05 230745 but the folder properties says it has 0 bytes usage in 33 folders. I've been doing a scheduled file backup once a week since August 5, 2007. Now my Complete PC Backup is under WindowsImageBackupPC-NameBackup 2008-01-03 052342 and the folder properties says it is using 91gb with 10 files inside. There are no other Backup folders under WindowsImageBackup, just a Catalog folder taking 24kb of space.
I'm wondering where the remaining used space is at? I tried changing folder view options to show hidden and system folders but they don't account for the missing space. I wanted to delete a bunch of the old File Backups to make room for more Complete Backups. I'm getting an error when trying to start a Complete PC Backup saying there is not enough space on the drive? The File Backup still works.
Is there anyway that I can keep folder sizes to remain constant? For example, in my documents folder, I like the folders to be large, however at times they will be small or in list view. Is there anyway to set the size to remain large no matter what?

1)Root (see all drives): Drive C: - 46.2 out of 58.9 GB free = 12.7GB
2)Right-click on "Drive C:", "Properties": Used Space = 12.6GB
3)Open Drive C:, mark all files/folders, "Properties": Size = 16.7 GB

I have a user who has hyperlinks in an Excel 2007 spreadsheet that are linked to a network folder. Sometimes when she uses the hyperlink, documents that have recently been saved to the folder do not show in the Windows Explorer that is launched. She can however launch another Explorer and see all of the documents (with both explorer sessions open side by side).

I made a user's account for XXX. In Windows Explorer my user XXX does not show up. User HP does, and it has all my documents. I don't want the path to all my stuff to go like "C:UsersHPDocuments" , I want it to be "C:UsersXXXDocuments". When I go to user account through Control Panel > User accounts the user HP is *not* shown, user XXX *is shown*. User HP is not visible either if I go to "manage other accounts"

In Tools, Settings, Advanced I have eBooks and eNews library location set to C:Program FilesMobipocket.comMobipocket ReaderLibrary, and I have downloaded My Bookshelf contents there. I can't see this folder or its contents in Windows Explorer, and I can't cd to it or dir its contents in command prompt running as administrator, but yet all of the eBooks that I have downloaded to this location are working normally. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista (64-bit) on a desktop, and I am attempting to access/salvage folders on a hard drive from my laptop (that is no longer bootable) in order to copy these files to another device. The old hard drive ran on a Windows 2000 platform, and I am attempting to access a User folder under Documents and Settings. My Vista system tells me that I do not have permission to access this folder. I have right-clicked on this folder to bring up Properties, and it appears that I do have authority. In Windows 2000 one was able to log on as an Administrator, but in Vista I go straight to the desktop at the time of boot. I am sure that this must be handled in User Control, for example, but I am not certain of the procedure.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is about Windows 7, I do not know whether this is an issue in Vista. Seems like Microsoft has undervalued the folder view, maybe even trying to get rid of it. Some time after Windows 98, I think Microsoft improved folder view by allowing a single click on the folder name to expand subfolders underneath. Now with Windows 7, clicking on the default taskbar folder opens with the folder view exposed. Apparently Microsoft again understands how useful folder view is. But, unless I am mistaken, here we go again... Currently I am looking at Windows 7, trying to find the setting to allow single clicking on a folder name in the folder view to expand the folder. Before, it was the same function as clicking on the small plus mark on the left side of the folder name. In the main window of Windows Explorer, you can enable hover to select and a single click to expand the folder, but that IMO sucks when working with files.
Is there a setting in Windows 7 which allows a single click on a folder name in folder view to expand the subfolders underneath that folder in folder view? Or are we stuck once again having to click the small plus sign to the left of the folder name?
This is easy to do in XP but Vista SP1 still seems to be broken or is it me?

w/Vista) or hardware (starting w/post-2006) you have, but you can do more,
read my article:
As you know from Electrical Engineering basics, theoretical memory space is
defined by the address bus width. In a binary system it's simply 2^N where
N is the address width.
In plain English:
If your Windows is 32-bit it can theoretically manage 2^32 = 4GB.
If your hardware (e.g. Intel945 chipset?) is 32 bit but Windows is 64 bit,
or hardware is 64bit but Windows is 32 bit it's still 4GB as obviously the
lower address width limits the system, and disregards 64 bit elsewhere.
The practical numbers are somewhat different:
a) Windows 32-bit claims a whopping 0.75GB for itself ("untouchable" by
you - the user) due to I/O overhead in a 4GB memory space leaving you with
ONLY 3.25GB of usable memory
Too long to explain but just accept it as a fact - almost a Gigabyte is
eaten by the BIOS, I/O, etc. memory addresses your applications cannot use.
b) On the upside you can go over 4GB EVEN in a 32-bit Windows if this
Windows is a Server, and not a Client version.
There's a 99.9% chance you running a Client and not Server Windows, so your
usable memory is therefore:
3.25GB But I don't know exactly what Win version you run, so you can
calculate by understanding this article, i.e if you're so advanced as to
have Windows SERVER edition, then even in 32-bit configuration it can "page"
more than 4GB.
How much did you pay for 4GB and how much WOULD you pay for 3GB?
The $dollar difference as of September2009 is NOT worth any regret.
You'd lose pennies, stop worrying & have at least 4GB. Also better if you
install memory modules "symmetrically" which, as a consequence, also means
you'd have an even number of memory units.
In plain English, it's better to install two modules 2GB+2GB = 4GB, than
2GB+1GB = 3GB which is assymetric, although such may not longer be of any
importance for new computers, in the past it was an issue. Still I
recommend not to play with assymetry for DDR2 memory, I don't know about
DDR3 and this example covers 4GB. You might have 4GB+4GB=8GB for example,
for 64-bit Windows AND 64-bit hardware as a requirement.
Why would anyone need 8GB?
Well, I even need MORE - 16GB for CAD/Engineering & Graphics design work, so I can lots of memory running heavy-duty engineering simulations.
Plus it stimulates industry (but hurts environment)
So memory space is defined by 3 factors:
OS bit width
Hardware bitwidth
Whether your Windows addressing is using virtuial/paging/etc to bypass
normal addressing limted to 2^N - i.e. is it a regular Win Client or Server,
and how much your Windows wastes for itself (overhead)
Just get 4GB and be done with it.
BUT IF YOU NEED 1GB+1GB MODULES = 2GB of laptop, DDR667 speed memory, let me
know - I can ship for free (you just pay shipping by Post Office in USA or
abroad), I removed them and replaced with 8GB on my laptop.
I have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)
When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."
However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.
Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.
Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.
Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)
Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.
Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.
Im running Vista and IE8. Every time I try to move a file from one folder to another, "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut down" appears. Does anyone know how to recify this problem?

This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. View 8 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Gateway ML3109 runs lean and clean with only Office 2003 and no startup programs listed in Defender Explorer. Recently it has begun to slow down signifcantly on startup. I found errors logging in the Diagnostic-Performance>Operational Event Log, usually with a Critical 100 Event about startup degradation, accompanied by multiple Errors about indiviual apps/drivers taking longer to complete resulting in performance degradation in system start-up process. Most recent are Event 105 "Foreground optimizations (prefetching) took longer to complete, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process," Events 102 "This driver took longer to initialize, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process": HdAudAddService, PptpMinport, Ndistapi, NdisWan, AgereSoftModem; Events 101 "This application took longer than ususal to start up...": LogonUIxe, mmc.exe, svchost.exe, etc. Each time it seems to be different services, drivers and applications which are delayed and they individually troubleshoot ok. I was advised by Gateway to do a clean reinstall which I have done twice with no change in the situtation, leading me to believe it might be a setting in the Boot or BIOS which is incorrect. It is the same with or without my Avast antivirus.

Whenever I browse through folders on my hd via an application like Photoshop or Internet Explorer, that application will lock up when I get into Documents. Whenever I make a 'New Folder' the folder icon does not show up and its this weird white thing. Almost all folders in Windows Explorer look like this and it's extremely annoying.
