I have a user who has hyperlinks in an Excel 2007 spreadsheet that are linked to a network folder. Sometimes when she uses the hyperlink, documents that have recently been saved to the folder do not show in the Windows Explorer that is launched. She can however launch another Explorer and see all of the documents (with both explorer sessions open side by side).
HP repaired my desktop and sent it back with a re-installed Windows. The named the owner of the pc HP. I changed this to my own name, say XXX. I made a user's account for XXX. In Windows Explorer my user XXX does not show up. User HP does, and it has all my documents. I don't want the path to all my stuff to go like "C:UsersHPDocuments" , I want it to be "C:UsersXXXDocuments". When I go to user account through Control Panel > User accounts the user HP is *not* shown, user XXX *is shown*. User HP is not visible either if I go to "manage other accounts"
I have tried without success to get Windows Explorer to show a file extension, but cannot find a way to do it. I have tried all the options in View / Choose Details but don't have all luck. I guess I must be stupid. There must be a way. I am running Home Premium.
Is there a way of doing this in My Computer &/or Windows Explorer? Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. If Windows won't allow this simple request, is there some 3rd Party Utility available?
My files that I have saved do not show up when I look for them, when i save additional files or resave those files they still dont show up. the files that i have save can't be found any where, even with searching "everywhere" however these file have been saved in the correct location, because when i saved more files, the files that i had saved are there, are shown. I even try making a new folder to save them into. I could create the folders but still NO FILES!
I have a clean verson of vista home. I just ran my mcafee virus scan and it is finding 1,000's of virus's in the folder c:/documents and settings. Anytime I open my c: drive this file doesn't show up. How do I access this folder? It keeps making more viruses as fast as it is deleting them.
little by little I am learning about the differences in XP and Vista. Well, one of them is that Vista no longer uses Documents & Settingsfolder, but a Users folders. If this is true, why do I have a D&S folder under my Vista boot when I do a explore and why can't I open it if I am the administrator?
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit. A couple of weeks ago, I noted that something was causing the explorer.exe program to spike in its CPU usage. When this occurred, CPU usage would immediately spike to over 50%, and would never drop below this level without closing out and restarting explorer.exe in the task manager. If I tried to click on another folder after the 50%+ spike, explorer.exe would immediately spike to 100% CPU usage, and nothing futher could be done until explorer.exe was closed and restarted in the task manager.
In trying to discover the root of the problem, I found that this was happening whenever I clicked my shortcut to open Windows Explorer. This didn't happen, though, when I simply opened "My Computer." Further examination has shown this strange phenomenon to be what's causing the issue: any time a link to the "Documents" folder is clicked, the CPU spike occurs. This only happens when "Documents" is clicked in either the "Favorite Links" pane or the "Folders" pane below it. I can navigate to the "Documents" folder the long way (Users--My Name--Documents) and the spike does not occur. Also, I can click in any of the sub-folders (and all of their sub-folders) within the Documents folder from the "Folders" pane without the CPU spike occurring. The spike only occurs when the Documents folder itself is clicked from either the Favorite Links pane, the folders pane, or upon opening to it directly by opening "Windows Explorer." So, while I've found a workaround that prevents the CPU spike from occurring, the problem still exists, and I'd really like to be able to find the solution.
Windows 7 is full of bugs and missing features. Some common hardware which is correctly set up by vista will need drivers and manual interactions in 7. They simply removed a ton of drivers in the 7 DVD. BUG Explorer does not show the new thumbnail, if you have changed, cropped, resized a jpg. you cannot tell which file is newer if you have copies of one and the same file, you need to compare date/time and filesize....
My Gateway ML3109 runs lean and clean with only Office 2003 and no startup programs listed in Defender Explorer. Recently it has begun to slow down signifcantly on startup. I found errors logging in the Diagnostic-Performance>Operational Event Log, usually with a Critical 100 Event about startup degradation, accompanied by multiple Errors about indiviual apps/drivers taking longer to complete resulting in performance degradation in system start-up process. Most recent are Event 105 "Foreground optimizations (prefetching) took longer to complete, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process," Events 102 "This driver took longer to initialize, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process": HdAudAddService, PptpMinport, Ndistapi, NdisWan, AgereSoftModem; Events 101 "This application took longer than ususal to start up...": LogonUIxe, mmc.exe, svchost.exe, etc. Each time it seems to be different services, drivers and applications which are delayed and they individually troubleshoot ok. I was advised by Gateway to do a clean reinstall which I have done twice with no change in the situtation, leading me to believe it might be a setting in the Boot or BIOS which is incorrect. It is the same with or without my Avast antivirus.
After spending hours trying to find 20 GB that Explorer reported was on my C:drive that wasn't there when I added up the sizes of all the visible and hidden files and folders, I finally discovered 16 GB of data in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsWERReportQueue folder! 16 GB! This folder is the Windows Error Reporting queue. I have been having some trouble with Windows Update and a few other Vista things, but my problems can't be so interesting that it takes 16 GB to describe them. I only found it with a freeware program called WinDirStat. Explorer didn't show it in any folder. I just deleted it all and so far so good. If you're having trouble finding what's sucking up your disk space, check
I have an email in my inbox with an attachment. When I open the attachment my text editor reports the following path :UsersMYNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5JTQYLO9PNathaniel Moore Descendants.txt If I try to open this directly in my text editor (EditPad Lite which stores recently visited documents) it reports that the file cannot be found. I have searched my computer and the search cannot find this document. Windows explorer doesn't even show a Temporary Internet Files subfolder in the Windows folder. Can anyone explain what is going on here? I don't appreciate Microsoft retaining information on my computer that I am unaware of. Can I get rid of this attachment without deleting the email?
I looked but couldn't find this issue elsewhere. I noticed that when I opened my files, there were extra MY DOCUMENTS folders. Other people who used this computer apparently messed around and copied MY DOCUMENTS folders. I tried to remedy the mess, but did so when I was tired, and seem to have made matters worse. Now, when I go to the Start Menu> Documents the documents are not there. I am at a loss as to how to fix this.
When I open windows explorer in either XP or Vista it opens the "My Document" folder as the default. However I only want "My Computer" to be expanded and everything else left unexpanded.
I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
When trying to launch win fax & scan I get an error: "Windows Fax and Scan cannot run as it cannot access your documents folder ..."
The MyDocuments folder is in my F: drive partition. I'd like to keep it there since that where I store my data files for back-up, but I'm willing to create another Documents folder where fax & scan can access it.
I can't access My Documents and Settings Folder in Windows 7 even though I'm the administrator. I want to rearrange and add some folders to the Start-All Programs. What am I not doing right?
In Windows Explorer, the Layout Preview Pane will not preview any documents i.e. Word, Excel. It only shows PDF's, .JPGS etc. This computer is using Office 2003. On my other PCs all documents preview regardless of Office version.

I cannot locate a Windows 7 NG so I am posting here in the hopes that someone can point me in the right direction. Is it possible to add the "Show Desktop" Icon/Function to Windows 7? There is no Icon for it the lower left-hand corner as with Vista.

Why, in Windows Mail newsgroup, 'Microsoft Communities', (at the bottom of the screen/window) does not show the total number of message and the number of unread messages plus "Working Online"? It does show,'Downloading/Refreshing Metedata...' but then when it finishes and refreshes, most (not all) groups, all messages are gone.
I have Vista Home Premium, I have read other posts and follwed advise to see if SP1 is installed. The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.
I have my signature as an html file and when i view it in IE it looks fine. But when I transfer it to my windows mail the img src is empty. it just shows src"" in the source code of the email and my image is just a blank box with an x in the upper lefthand corner. What during the transfer from html file to signature is making the image source path disappear?
When I use the Bcc option for sending an email the recipients do not show up when I pull up the email from my 'Sent' folder. How do I change that? Often times I like to know who I have sent an email to.
problem with wmp 11 is that for some reason it takes a good 20+ seconds to play a song. Video streaming is fine, it's just with mp3 format songs. Not only is there a time lag for mp3 song files but it will always start skipping for the last 10 seconds of the file. It never fails, I must wait half a minute whenever I click a song and then it WILL skip during the end. I can't reinstall it for some reason either. It doesn't show up in the add or remove programs list. I can't express my annoyence enough, having such a large library of music.
