I looked but couldn't find this issue elsewhere. I noticed that when I opened my files, there were extra MY DOCUMENTS folders. Other people who used this computer apparently messed around and copied MY DOCUMENTS folders. I tried to remedy the mess, but did so when I was tired, and seem to have made matters worse. Now, when I go to the Start Menu> Documents the documents are not there. I am at a loss as to how to fix this.
View 4 RepliesI redirected my Documents folder to my home drive, and it worked for a month or so. Somehow I lost access to that drive, and although it was corrected fairly quickly, now when I click on the Documents link under the Start Menu, nothing happens. No error, it just doesn't open. When I right click the Start Menu Documents icon and go to Properties, there is no information listed there. It is just all blank showing 0 bytes.
When I go to my profile, it shows a regular folder for Documents, not the fancy new Documents icon used in Vista. When I open this folder it opens my local Documents directory, but there is nothing there (since everything was being kept on the network drive). When I right-click this folder, it opens and the location on the local drive C:usersame, and it has the following tabs: General, Sharing, Security, Previous Versions, and Customize. The Location tab is missing so I can't redirect the folder back to the network drive. I did go to the Start Menu properties and remove, then add back the Documents link, but that didn't help. I enabled and disabled User Access Control and that didn't help. I even did a System Restore of the system to last week before this problem started,
I need to remove Documents icon from Vista classic start menu. I have removed all unwated icons allready but i can't find a way how to remove Documents icon. Look at the pic, it's from czech version of Vista, but Dokumenty means Documents in english Vista. It's not in gpedit.msc (or i can't find it there).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a problem printing documents - the 'spooler subsystem app' was not functioning properly. So I found this site: You cannot add a printer, and you receive printer spooler error messages, and didn't see the fact that this troubleshooting page was for XP only. So I followed the instructions, and basically ended up deleting nearly all registry files in safe mode except the default ones. When I realized I had messed up, I performed a system restore that I had created immediately before editing the registry files. After the system restore, Vista wouldn't boot. So I restarted and booted in safe mode, got confirmation that the system had been restored, and restarted once again in Vista. Now, I have some annoying problems:
-the start menu freezes. I can click the menu, but i can't click any icons on the start menu itself. -Windows Live OneCare won't start -System restore will not boot. when I start it in the start menu (before start menu freezes), I see in task manager that rstrui.exe (the System restore file) is running as a process, but no application appears. How can i restore my computer?
When I used XP I kept the My Documents file on my D: drive. Apart from anything else this made backing-up a cinch. After upgrading to Vista, I played around and managed to get the D: drive to appear on my start menu. It also appears under my Username folder on the start menu. However, it is grey rather than green and in both places is is called DATA (D rather than documents (or possibly Documents).
My Music and Pictures folders are stored as sub-folders in this drive/folder in the right place, but the other default folders such as Links, Saved Games, Searches, Downloads and Favourites are not, for some reason they still sit on the C: drive. My Videos folder is on my E: drive where I would like to keep it.
Ideally I'd like all these folders to sit on D: with a green Documents folder and all the sub-folders (except Videos). I've seen plenty of online tips about moving folders, sometimes they involve tinkering with the registry, but not much about fixing wrongly configured folders. This isn't just petty nonsense, I really need everything in one place so I can organise simple and reliable back-ups
im having a problem with the startup menu on vista x64. ive installed vista everything went great. after installing i lookked at the all programs menu it had loads of icons for the likes of media centre and other free vista apps. anyway ive installed drivers some of my programs done a windows update downloaded all updates come back to the all programs menu and am missing loads of icons. i havent a clue how this as happend. look at this pic and i have lost everything in the list thats above windows update
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently i installed Vista x64 Ultimate and as i remember in startall programs there are two icons of internet explorer (32 and 64 bit) and WMP icon. Now that icons are gone. Is that because Opera is my default browser and Gom and winamp are default media players? Of course i think that this is not problem. I remeber that i deleted that icons from quick lunch but deleting them from quick lunch doesn't mean deleting tham from start menu, right? Wmp and IE can be started directly by typing wmplayer and iexplore in search but i want that icons back in startall programs!

View 5 Replies View Relatedmy computer its nothing serious its just annoying and i want to fix it. the icons on the right side of the Start menu are now shown as folders and not the fancy one and i miss that, i was wondering if i can change them back? this all started a few days ago i think i caused it by doing something with CMD and some files showed up and i was deleting alot of them cause they looked like they were unnessasary, i think i deleted something that shouldnt of been deleted. now im just trying to figure out how to fix it with using system restore because i dont have the a restore point to fix that problem my restore points are deleted.

I'm not sure if it has been missing since I installed it, but I tried deleting the icon cache and uninstalling/reinstalling Spywareblaster, but the icon remains missing. If I right click on the shortcut within the menu and select properties-change icon, the correct icon is shown there. Not a major problem, just a bit annoying that the usual fixes don't seem to correct it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo basically, a few weeks after i got Vista i tried to install Stellarium (freeware astronomy program), which crashed my computer. I restarted, and after typing in my password I get "My Documents" open on a black screen, nothing else, no taskbar or desktop icons or anything. When i try to open the "taskbar and start menu" icon in Control Panel, nothing happens. Also, when I Ctrl-Alt-Del the usual screen comes up, but the task manager is no longer an option, and i can't think of how to access it or my taskbar. I've installed all the servfice packs and they haven't helped.

I've been to the Start Menu properties window, and under Privacy, I only have a single entry, "Store and display a list of recently opened programs". The corresponding entry for documents is missing. Furthermore, although I can check the one-and-only tick-box, the setting doesn't hold, and it's unchecked again next time I open Properties. I have a Recent Items folder (with the correct icon), deep in my User folder, but it's empty. I tried restoring the desktop.ini file from an early disk image, but although the restore appears to work according to the image program, the folder remains stubbornly empty. It's as though some system setting registry value has been set prohibiting the use or display of this Recent Items folder.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm the user Jack with file structure looking like: C:/Users/Jack/ here several folders are listed including My Documents (Looks like shortcut) and Documents. Not sure why both appear but I can't get into My Documents but can get into Documents. Inside My Documents is My Music (looks like shortcut) but I can't get into that either. What am I missing here? I'm sensing Vista uses folders as "pointers" but I'm not sure thats a lot different than XP? Very confusing why with admin privileges I can't get into some folders.

Everytime I go to a picture file in my document files, I highlight the pictures that I want to rename. Then when I click rename & type the name of the pics that I want labeled, it scrambles the pictures in a different order & the numbers of the pics are pic 1, pic 1, pic 2, pic 2, etc, etc.

I removed the hard disk connected it to a test bed and run treesize and try to explore "my documents" but telling access denied or showing it as empty.. I donot want to take the risk of doing a restore as there were important files on there..
I am going to try to run it on safe mode and see and also check the folders options as whether it is not on hidden files.
This is probably a waste of everyone's time - but is there any way to recover your documents from your hard drive if you installed (not upgraded) from XP to Vista? I've lost everything and I'm dying over here!
View 5 Replies View Relatedi discovered vista had somehow made TWO documents folders, one was the one i used all the time and had all my documents in, the other just had junk in it...so i deleted it, thinking since they had different contents they werent linked, well turns out they WERE linked.oh lovely.so now my documents folder is GONE all the contents were just erased and none are in my recycle bin.
i tried REcuva, some file recovery program and i found SOME of my old files but the majority are still missing. i also tried a system restore. it failed as well. i downloaded a ebook before i read somewhere NOT to download anything for it could overwrite where my files are/were. right now for some reason i have 4 documents folders. i didnt create any of them. they just keep appearing

Using vista home premium, I copied documents from an old user to a CD. I copied the CD to "documents" in the new user. I can access all of the documents in the "documents" file but I have to have the CD in inorder to access documents while I am using MS Works 9. Documents only show up in Works History when the CD is in the CD drive. How can I permanently move or copy documents to MS Works from "documents"?

I can enable it and it does show up, but when I reboot my computer it disappears again. I go and right click the orb and click properties and I see that the check box for "Store and display a list of recently opened files" is unchecked again. I have not tweaked my system and the only thing I have installed lately was Firefox 3 rc3. I have got IE7 as my default browser. I am at a loss. I know this is a small problem, but it was handy to have the list of recently opened files to hand.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just performed an upgrade from XP to Vista Ultimate. the upgrade ran very smoothly, but I was shocked to find that all of "my Documents" and my "Doumnets and settings" had been deleted, but strangely , my wifes user profile on the same machine was completly intacked. I have tried to use a data recover tool to recover my data which I can still see on the hard drive, but most of it has been over written by the upgrade.

The Desktop has the printer connect via USB and the laptop is connect to network wireless. The laptop can access network shared files and also sees and installs printer. I then print a test page and it works great. However when I try to print any documents they fail to print. I tried intalling the printer on the laptop as a local printer then adding a local port and mapping it to the desktop \desktopprinter but get an access denied error.

After installing Office 2007 on the newly rebuilt machine I opened the Documents folder and copied all of my documents back. However, now I have 2 Documents folders, one with only the Desktop.ini in it and the other with ANOTHER Documents folder with all of my documents (basically a DOCUMENTS folder under a top level DOCUMENTS folder). Why is this happening? How do I fix it so that I only have ONE Documents folder?
