Explorer Indicate RED Cross On Drives
Mar 23, 2008I have Vista basic SP1 v.668 which mount on a laptop XP SP3 v.3264 two drive. The user name for the mount is the same user name I login to vista but witH Different password. After the XP returns from standby and I try the same Word 2007 file in the XP I get an error. Explorer indicate RED cross on the drives. When double-click I'm prompt to enter user name/password ( without the option to save password )

Number Of Installs On Different Drives Of Same Computer
Feb 16, 2009Just obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.
1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??
2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?
Phantom Drives In Computer Window.
Jan 3, 2009I have a 100gb Seagate portable hard drive, which is split 50/50 between an HFS partition for leopard, and a NTFS partition for windows. When I added the windows partition, it asked me what letter to give it, so to make it memorable, I gave it Z:/. Now, after it has been plugged in a few times, I see in "Computer" that is listed many times, as "Local disk ('Letter')". I removed the drive letter setting completely, thinking that would help, but it didn't change anything, now the real listing just says G instead of Z. but the phantom drives are still there.
the REAL listing for the drive is the Seagate NTFS (G/) one. However all of the other ones work as well and show the contents of the drive. Now, I have another portable hard drive that is 500GB, that is also split half and half the same way, and it never does this. is there any way to force vista to double check it's mounted drives to see if they all really exist?

They simply removed a ton of drivers in the 7 DVD. BUG Explorer does not show the new thumbnail, if you have changed,cropped,resized a jpg. you cannot tell which file is newer if you have copies of one and the same file, you need to compare date/time and filesize....

Apr 26, 2009My Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive is acting up. I'm getting an error message from the Maxtor software that there is no partition or that the partition is not recognized and is telling me to format the drive. I do not want to do this yet because I do not want to lose my data. I've been looking at some data recovery programs to try to recover the data. When I first downloaded the recovery program, it saw the hard drive but then I had to pay to recover the data. So then I downloaded a free data recover program and now I can not get the hard drive to show up...on neither of the recovery programs. It does not show up in My Computer, but does show up in Device Manager. how I can get this to show up in my computer again or to show up on a "drive search" in one of the recovery programs? I really do not want to pay the expensive fees to have a "professional" recovery service do it.

Sometimes when she uses the hyperlink, documents that have recently been saved to the folder do not show in the Windows Explorer that is launched. She can however launch another Explorer and see all of the documents (with both explorer sessions open side by side).

Aug 17, 2009HP repaired my desktop and sent it back with a re-installed Windows. The named the owner of the pc HP. I changed this to my own name, say XXX. I made a user's account for XXX. In Windows Explorer my user XXX does not show up. User HP does, and it has all my documents. I don't want the path to all my stuff to go like "C:UsersHPDocuments" , I want it to be "C:UsersXXXDocuments". When I go to user account through Control Panel > User accounts the user HP is *not* shown, user XXX *is shown*. User HP is not visible either if I go to "manage other accounts"

Aug 18, 2008My Gateway ML3109 runs lean and clean with only Office 2003 and no startup programs listed in Defender Explorer. Recently it has begun to slow down signifcantly on startup. I found errors logging in the Diagnostic-Performance>Operational Event Log, usually with a Critical 100 Event about startup degradation, accompanied by multiple Errors about indiviual apps/drivers taking longer to complete resulting in performance degradation in system start-up process. Most recent are Event 105 "Foreground optimizations (prefetching) took longer to complete, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process," Events 102 "This driver took longer to initialize, resulting in a performance degradation in the system start up process": HdAudAddService, PptpMinport, Ndistapi, NdisWan, AgereSoftModem; Events 101 "This application took longer than ususal to start up...": LogonUIxe, mmc.exe, svchost.exe, etc. Each time it seems to be different services, drivers and applications which are delayed and they individually troubleshoot ok. I was advised by Gateway to do a clean reinstall which I have done twice with no change in the situtation, leading me to believe it might be a setting in the Boot or BIOS which is incorrect. It is the same with or without my Avast antivirus.

Mar 16, 2010Now. Two days ago, a Trojan got into my computer and latched itself onto Internet Explorer and the security center, posing as a security alert for Vista. I was able to open up the main virus scanner I use (AVG free edition) and root out the Trojan, isolate it, and destroy it. The only problem is that it seems to have corrupted the security center and done other things, too. Whenever I try and open up a program normally, I get the "Chose the program you want to use to open this file" screen, with IE as the only option (even if I'm trying to open IE) unless I select the Run As Administrator tab. Windows Defender is turned off, too, and its alert says "contact your system admin to enable Windows Defender via group policy".
I thought I should post this here, because it seems to be primarily be a problem with the security of the computer. Ever since removing the Trojan the computer slows down and eventually freezes when it is connected to the Internet. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to reinstall Vista (which I'm unsure about, because my laptop came with Vista pre-installed and the Vista disc I have belongs to someone else)?
External Hard Drive Not Working .. Not Show Up In My Computer?
Dec 3, 2009I have a WD 3,5 Hard drive and I bought I case so I could make it external. However, when I connect it to my laptop, running on Vista Home Premium x64 SP2 it does not work. The drive is seen by Vista (it shows up in the Disk Management section in Computer Management) but it does not show up in My Computer. In Disk Management it appears Disk 1, Dynamic, Invalid, with a red downwards arrow. As I have all my info there a soluyion that requires a format is not an option.

However everything is plugged in and my mom's notebook has no problem. Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device is working properly. Jun 29, 2008At our house we have 4 HP Compaq nx6325 laptops, they came with Win xp on them but have the windows vista capable logo on them. We have upgraded two of them with windows vista home basic which has been working fine in most cases. But their seems to be something wrong with the cd drives. Sometimes when the computers are turned on the CD drives are missing in the "computer" location and when this is the case if you put a CD in it will no work. But a quick restart and it will work fine. This is the case with the two vista laptops. The XP ones, one works perfectly and the other will only read some discs (like music CD's).
Secondly my personal vista laptops CD drive used to be fine but i was having a hard drive problem and got a new one installed vista onto it and then i had this problem.
Just to clarify my vista laptop used to work fine the other did not, i got a new hard drive installed vista again and then had the same problem as the other one.
Our computers are fully updated with all the HP vista updates and service pack 1. i have tried manually updating the CD drive drivers but could not find any either in the internet or through device manager.

Internet Explorer 8 In Vista Causes Windows Explorer
Mar 21, 2009I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"
Sep 30, 2009Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........
Reboot Computer Through Windows The Computer Shuts Down Correctly
Jun 16, 2009When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?
