I had to reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate which prior to the reinstall had SP 1 installed. After this reinstall SP1 does not show in computer properties. Is SP1 still available somewhere on the computer for upgrading or will I have to use Windows Update to apply it?

I added the custom paper size in the print server and it is saved correctly, however, when I try to print, the print properties dialog does not show the paper size. In fact, there are many paper sizes in the print manager that do not show up in the list of available paper sizes.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy friend has a Hewlett Packard desktop computer that is approximately 3 years old. She is running Windows XP. All she has is the repair installation disk. She let one of her teenage grandsons get on her computer this past weekend and now she has 2 viruses that her security program says can't be removed. She originally had 3 viruses but the one that was located in the registry seems to be gone. The other two are both located in CSIDL_SYSTEMuac*.dll. She chose to quarantine the files, but every time she scans it picks them up again. She is using SecureIt which is provided through our ISP. She can boot her computer but she can not get online. We live in a rural community and the nearest computer repair shop is 100 miles away. Based on everything she's described to me I think her best bet is a reinstall of the OS. I'm asking someone to help me help her. Would a repair installation get rid of these viruses?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer freezes from time to time and I think I tried everything to locate what the problem could be. The event logs show nothing, I ran a memory test with no problem, (I have 4Gb), I checked my drive and had no problems. All my drivers are up to date and I have all the latest updates/service packs. So my last hope is to re-install Vista. Are there any easy steps to re-install Vista? Or do I have to format my machine and start from scratch? I don't want to re-install office and so on.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had some trouble with my system - Dell XPS 630I - hibernation problems, not being able to set or go back to a Restore Point, etc. So I've had a Microsoft tech help me solve my problems in the last few weeks, and after finally coming to the 'Reinstall Vista' as the only solution, I reinstalled yesterday. I have not yet installed any drivers or Dell software, but, obviously, did get my internet capability back.
I'm not worried about getting my system back to normal working order eventually, but one thing has me concerned: My system is running so loud and fast constantly. Previously, when I turned my computer on, during the startup phase, it ran like this (loud and fast, noisy) until it reached the black screen with the colorful, Vista circle in the middle, at which point it quieted down completely and continued with the Windows startup. Does anyone know what it is that has my computer sound like its running so fast, and sounding so loud constantly. Is it going to be one of the system drivers that I will eventually load that will 'calm' my system down??
My Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive is acting up. I'm getting an error message from the Maxtor software that there is no partition or that the partition is not recognized and is telling me to format the drive. I do not want to do this yet because I do not want to lose my data. I've been looking at some data recovery programs to try to recover the data. When I first downloaded the recovery program, it saw the hard drive but then I had to pay to recover the data. So then I downloaded a free data recover program and now I can not get the hard drive to show up...on neither of the recovery programs. It does not show up in My Computer, but does show up in Device Manager. how I can get this to show up in my computer again or to show up on a "drive search" in one of the recovery programs? I really do not want to pay the expensive fees to have a "professional" recovery service do it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedNow. Two days ago, a Trojan got into my computer and latched itself onto Internet Explorer and the security center, posing as a security alert for Vista. I was able to open up the main virus scanner I use (AVG free edition) and root out the Trojan, isolate it, and destroy it. The only problem is that it seems to have corrupted the security center and done other things, too. Whenever I try and open up a program normally, I get the "Chose the program you want to use to open this file" screen, with IE as the only option (even if I'm trying to open IE) unless I select the Run As Administrator tab. Windows Defender is turned off, too, and its alert says "contact your system admin to enable Windows Defender via group policy".
I thought I should post this here, because it seems to be primarily be a problem with the security of the computer. Ever since removing the Trojan the computer slows down and eventually freezes when it is connected to the Internet. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to reinstall Vista (which I'm unsure about, because my laptop came with Vista pre-installed and the Vista disc I have belongs to someone else)?
I have a WD 3,5 Hard drive and I bought I case so I could make it external. However, when I connect it to my laptop, running on Vista Home Premium x64 SP2 it does not work. The drive is seen by Vista (it shows up in the Disk Management section in Computer Management) but it does not show up in My Computer. In Disk Management it appears Disk 1, Dynamic, Invalid, with a red downwards arrow. As I have all my info there a soluyion that requires a format is not an option.

So when I try to connect my computer doesn't show my wireless network it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter 'local area connection". However everything is plugged in and my mom's notebook has no problem. Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device is working properly. I don't know what to do anymore. I've restarted my computer and unplugged and replugged the cable and disabled and enabled the adapter.

I must have unchecked a box that turns off the display of picture properties as you hover the pointer over the picture. I don't even remember what it is called anymore so it makes it hard to find out where i must have unchecked it at. If anyone knows where in my OS i could find this and get it back i would truly appreciate it. Didn't think i would miss it, but i do.

I wanted to copy my Favorites to a flash drive to put on another computer. Some of the files showed a message saying: Property Loss. The File has properties that cannot be copied to the new location. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that everything under the HP printer's properties is grayed out and so I cannot change anything. I thought ownership/privileges could be the cause of my not being able to print from this test VISTA machine over my LAN to the HP AIO printer which is connected directly via USB on my XP machine. But I can't change anything - I notice other things (e.g. share name) are grayed out also preventing change. At the very least I want to be able to regain control of all this. Remember - I can print in reverse over my LAN (using another printer). That is, from my XP machine to the EPSON printer connected to this test VISTA machine. I seem to be able to access and change files/folders at will from each machine to the other - so I feel I must have my LAN set up at least nearly correctly. Yes, I have turned User Account Control off.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to delete files from my Sansa Express which I use as an external USB drive. When I try to delete at the folder level, Vista tells me the "storage is write-protected" and that I should remove write-protection and try again. I am able to delete the files individually, however, with no problem at all. When I go to Properties, the folders are read-only. The individual files are not read-only, and they delete fine individually. The problem is only encountered when I select a folder and try to delete it. I can not disable read-only from Properties, because it is grayed out. It may or may not be relevant that most of these folders were loaded onto the drive from my other computer, which runs XP. However, not all those folders are running into this problem: only the ones which say "read-only" in Properties.
Things I've already tried: There is no write-protection switch on the device. There is a hold switch, and that is definitely in the off position. So a switch is not the issue here. I've gone through the lengthy and confusing process of taking ownership of files before, but there is no way to do that here. The only tab in the Properties screen is "General" and there's nothing in there I can click on or change. I've also tried running Windows Explorer as Administrator, but that doesn't help either. Formatting the drive is not a practical solution for me, because I can't just format it every time I encounter this problem.
I'm trying to export messages so I can import to another computer. Everytime I select an external drive (USB, HD, etc) I get an export error indicating the drive may be full or sometihng is wrong with the files. If I export to same PC, it works but when I try to copy and paste on external USB/HD I am asked if I want to go ahead when all properties are not transferrable. When I go ahead and import messages on othr PC, I get mail entries in the various boxes but no mail info.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer locked and i had to push the on/off button to release. I did a restart which took a long time. Everything is working ok now, but the 'volume, power, and network' icons on the bottom right of my screen have disappeared and will not turn back on. I go to properties (right click on the lower bar) and pull up 'task bar and start menu properties.' The 3 icons i want on are listed but greyed out on the 'notification' area of that window and will not click on.
How do I get these to turn on?
As above really, also some desktop icons are now appearing as blank (small white box). I have recently installed updated, correct drivers. How do I get these icons back. Most of my icons are fine, its just a few that are missing, mainly .sis

Today I noticed that the little volume meter next to each device under "Recording Devices" (Right-click your little speaker in the task bar and select Recording Devices) has disappeared. I know it disappeared either today or yesterday. I haven't done anything that could have messed with it. Do you guys know how I can get it back?

During this process, there are 2 folders that have files in them, I can listen to them, but 'properties' shows that the folders contain 0 bytes. If I try and move either of these folders or delete them I get the message that the folder is no longer in that location, but I can still play the files inside these folders! I've tried renaming them, but as they aren't where they're supposed to be - I can't............

I have been struggling trying to get my 360 connected to pc via ICS after upgrading on vista (worked fine on xp). Now the weirdest thing has happened. I have previously enabled ICS for my wireless connection, but now when I go to properties the entire tab for sharing has disappeared. So I can no longer disable it... or do anything sharing related. It was definately there before!! And the connection is showing up as shared... but now I cannot get back to this tab! As I said there are other cases of this online but noone has found
