As above really, also some desktop icons are now appearing as blank (small white box). I have recently installed updated, correct drivers. How do I get these icons back. Most of my icons are fine, its just a few that are missing, mainly .sis
files, which are Nokia applications.
Suddenly basic things stopped working. The screen settings after right-clicking on desktop won't appear. Just a blank window for a second and then it's gone completely. I can't run the screen settings from control panel, either. Clicking on games shortcut in Start menu won't work, too. Some of the icons in Control Panel don't respond at all after double-clicking them.
Firstly, I thought it might be caused by some software I installed, so I ran system restore to a point a week old. After restoring the system everything went fine, so I installed necessary aplications again and still, everything was fine. After a few days the problem reappeared, there was no installation or other input from me. I checked out the restore points and there was something like "Uninstalling the language package" restore point. So I restored the system again using this point. And it worked fine. However, after a few days the same thing happened with the same sypmtoms mentioned above. I started to think about some virus.
The computer has the latest NOD and I made sure it's up to date. I also scanned the system using latest Spybot and everything was fine, except one entry that was fixed. Still, the problem remained. After that I tried to install all the latest Vista updates that haven't been installed already. Still no change. So now I haven't got a clue what causes the problem. I thought it's something changing the registry because really, the simplest tasks like running the screen settings don't work. But there's no spyware or virus (as far as I'm concerened). Just now when I'm writing this post my sister told me that the touchpad scroll feature stopped working. This is really weird.
I have a x64 bit Vista operating system, which I've only had for about a month. Today I tried to right click one of my desktop icons, and it caused my Windows Explorer to crash, and then restart. This is true with all of my desktop icons.

Im using Vista Basic on a Sony Vaio NR32L. Last night I did everything normally, switched it on this morning and: c:windowssystem32configsystemprofiledesktop is not accesible. Access is denied. So I tried to change things, but I cant get into My Computer or Control Panel or anything else in fact. Also to actually switch on it takes years and then the message appears.

I have just purchased a new laptop that also has Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail on it. The laptop is "connected" to the tower with a wireless router, and I am able to access the tower to open all kinds of files and folders.
Is there a way, however, for me to use my laptop to gain access to the tower's e-mail folders? (I know about leaving messages on server, and deleting in x days).
for the past few days, desktop shortcuts won't access urls. have deleted / replaced short cuts same problem, also have problems accessing url in open email so0me open others don't. when clicking shortcut get error---=no program associated to preform this operation. have scanned computer with norton and avg no problems detected

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail and if I click on WAB.EXE nothing happens. Same if I try to access the address book from the toolbar. The address book seems to be working fine otherwise. The only way I can access the address book is to start to compose a message, click on the To: field and then I can add to, modify, or get an address. I don't want to go over to live Mail since it doesn't handle my Inbox Folders and all their subfolders properly.

He sat on it for about 10 seconds and you know that clicking sound when your templet is full? Well after I got the cat off the clicking kept up for about 2 minutes. When I scroll using any web browser there is a faint rapid clicking sound coming from the hard drive area (underneath the touchpad). It is almost like the hard drive is parking the head on and off. I've run SMART tests and everything checks out.
Has anyone had an issue like this?
A friend who has Vista (I have XP) says that when she right-clicks, "New" --> "Folder" is not an option that comes up on the resulting menu choices.

Whenever this happens, my mouse left click does not work properly.
For example, if I click on internet explorer then the it opens however I can't click
anything on explorer. The blue color on top of explorer turns gray and nothing happens.
When I do ctrl+alt+del to turn on task manager and click couple times on the task manager screen then it goes back to normal.
Of course first mouse click doesn't work. it is second click on task manager that will make it work properly.
I know this sounds so strange and unusual. But I'm just trying to explain the situation as best as possible.
I tried different mouse/ new driver and so on. It has nothing to do with mouse at all. I just thinking maybe something is running that prevent my mouse from working properly. I checked virus and adware and everything.
I even format the hard drive more than 5 times but same problem still exists.
Microsoft Office Document Imaging is running perfectly with one exception! I cannot open .mdi files by double clicking them. Although if I open the Office Tool first, then I can quite happily do a File Open sequence and use the .mdi file normally. The .mdi file extension refuses to allow itself to be associated with mspview.exe (the correct executable file) even when I try to do it via Default Progams using the built-in administrator account. No helpful error message just no response (I AM able to associate .mdi with other (incorrect) exe files so it seems to be mspview.exe that Vista has taken a dislike to for some reason. It was working ok until I uninstalled MS Office 2003.
I DID have both Office 2003 & 2007 installed but the older version was redundant. I see no reason why Vista should block this file association unless I have a Registry issue potentially? (And yes I have done several restarts) I can of course do a System Restore (hopefully) but I wondered if anyone had any ideas why I'm having problems? Alternatively, I can re-install Office 2007 completely but that seems to be a bit of a sledgehammer approach.
I am logged in as an administrator. However, if I try to run Erunt by left clicking the program, I get an error message. So, I right click and choose 'Run as an Administrator' and it works fine. Why should I have to do this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Works Suite 2006 in my Vista Home Premium computer. Everything works fine apart from Word 2002. I am unable to open Word by clicking on document files. If I double click on a document file in Explorer nothing happens. If I right click and select Open With, and then click on wordicon, nothing happens. I am also unable to launch Word from the Works Suite program launcher. I can open Word, no problem, and it appears to work fine, but to edit a document I have to search for it from within Word, which is often inconvient. I have un-installed the suite, and re-installed it, but the problem still persists.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

I must have unchecked a box that turns off the display of picture properties as you hover the pointer over the picture. I don't even remember what it is called anymore so it makes it hard to find out where i must have unchecked it at. If anyone knows where in my OS i could find this and get it back i would truly appreciate it. Didn't think i would miss it, but i do.

I wanted to copy my Favorites to a flash drive to put on another computer. Some of the files showed a message saying: Property Loss. The File has properties that cannot be copied to the new location. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that everything under the HP printer's properties is grayed out and so I cannot change anything. I thought ownership/privileges could be the cause of my not being able to print from this test VISTA machine over my LAN to the HP AIO printer which is connected directly via USB on my XP machine. But I can't change anything - I notice other things (e.g. share name) are grayed out also preventing change. At the very least I want to be able to regain control of all this. Remember - I can print in reverse over my LAN (using another printer). That is, from my XP machine to the EPSON printer connected to this test VISTA machine. I seem to be able to access and change files/folders at will from each machine to the other - so I feel I must have my LAN set up at least nearly correctly. Yes, I have turned User Account Control off.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to delete files from my Sansa Express which I use as an external USB drive. When I try to delete at the folder level, Vista tells me the "storage is write-protected" and that I should remove write-protection and try again. I am able to delete the files individually, however, with no problem at all. When I go to Properties, the folders are read-only. The individual files are not read-only, and they delete fine individually. The problem is only encountered when I select a folder and try to delete it. I can not disable read-only from Properties, because it is grayed out. It may or may not be relevant that most of these folders were loaded onto the drive from my other computer, which runs XP. However, not all those folders are running into this problem: only the ones which say "read-only" in Properties.
Things I've already tried: There is no write-protection switch on the device. There is a hold switch, and that is definitely in the off position. So a switch is not the issue here. I've gone through the lengthy and confusing process of taking ownership of files before, but there is no way to do that here. The only tab in the Properties screen is "General" and there's nothing in there I can click on or change. I've also tried running Windows Explorer as Administrator, but that doesn't help either. Formatting the drive is not a practical solution for me, because I can't just format it every time I encounter this problem.
I'm trying to export messages so I can import to another computer. Everytime I select an external drive (USB, HD, etc) I get an export error indicating the drive may be full or sometihng is wrong with the files. If I export to same PC, it works but when I try to copy and paste on external USB/HD I am asked if I want to go ahead when all properties are not transferrable. When I go ahead and import messages on othr PC, I get mail entries in the various boxes but no mail info.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer locked and i had to push the on/off button to release. I did a restart which took a long time. Everything is working ok now, but the 'volume, power, and network' icons on the bottom right of my screen have disappeared and will not turn back on. I go to properties (right click on the lower bar) and pull up 'task bar and start menu properties.' The 3 icons i want on are listed but greyed out on the 'notification' area of that window and will not click on.
How do I get these to turn on?
Today I noticed that the little volume meter next to each device under "Recording Devices" (Right-click your little speaker in the task bar and select Recording Devices) has disappeared. I know it disappeared either today or yesterday. I haven't done anything that could have messed with it. Do you guys know how I can get it back?
