I have installed Works Suite 2006 in my Vista Home Premium computer. Everything works fine apart from Word 2002. I am unable to open Word by clicking on document files. If I double click on a document file in Explorer nothing happens. If I right click and select Open With, and then click on wordicon, nothing happens. I am also unable to launch Word from the Works Suite program launcher. I can open Word, no problem, and it appears to work fine, but to edit a document I have to search for it from within Word, which is often inconvient. I have un-installed the suite, and re-installed it, but the problem still persists.
When trying to open standard Word documents in Windows Mail I am getting a message 'this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an assocition in Set Associations Control Panel'.

In desperation, after not getting the answer on the Vista.Genearl group, I'm posting this to as many groups as I think may be able to help as I suspect that the problem could occur in any MS operating system and is not Vista specific. It might just even be associated with MS Word itself.
The problem is as stated in the subject. After I did a factory reformat of a pre-installed Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire L3600 and re-installed my apps, including MS Office 2007 Plus I found that when I right-click the desktop and choose "New", most of options to open a new folder, shortcut, Bitmap Image and documents in the Office suite are there except for MS Word. It used to be there, now it's not and as far as I can see it is the only one missing.
In fact Word shows up when I installed MS Office on my wife's Dell laptop as a test. I've un- and re-installed the entire Office suite to no avail. How has this happened, but more importantly, how can I get it back in the list? It's the feature of the right-click procedure, other than opening a new folder, that I find the most useful.
I receive a message that states "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set Assoc control panel". This started after getting my new computer and changing from using Microsoft Outlook Express with Windows XP to Windows Mail with Vista.
I checked the file associations. If I set a file extension of .doc to Microsoft Word (2007) instead of Microsoft Works Word Processor, the a file with .doc will not open but will open under Works Word Processor. This only occurs will email attachments. I don't have any problems if the attachment is saved from another computer to a jump drive and then try to open it on my computer.
My husband got a computer about the same time that I did and he doesn't have this problem but he also doesn't use Windows Mail either (He reads his emails from the internet - Yahoo). I used Outlook Express before and didn't want to lose any of my old documents.
When I edit Word Documents I get something that looks weird with all sorts of strange characters in the document or letter. How do I edit a previously created Word file and get it to look like a normal document like they did with Word 2003?
I use Vista and want to know how to open a file that was originally in Word 97? 2003 to open in Vista Word 2007 and how to convert that file to the Word 2007 format. When I searched Microsoft on this issue, it said to click on Start and look for the word convert. When I did that I could not find the work convert.
I am unable to to open any office apps or pdf. I get the error 'file can not be found'. I never used to have this problem. The only thing I have changed is downloading Internet Explorer 8 - would this effect windows mail?
Last night my daughter scanned a document into word 2003 on our new VISTA machine. When she took it to work, she could not open the file on her XP computer. Is there anything we can do to enable this??
I'm using MS word 2007 on Vista. Months ago, I made a document then saved and later then whenever I open MS Word, it appears "that document" as a template. How can I erase that document and go back to a blank .doc page?
How can one convert the list of files in a folder, as shown on "View...List" in Explorer, to a Word Document without first capturing the screen, printing the image, then physically scanning the printed page, and finally utilizing the OCR program? I do not wish to retype the lists as text documents, which I nearly and effectively have to do when the OCR has been used previously in this manner. I have over 2,000 family photos that I have restored and "saved as..." with identifiying names and dates and need an editable list to be used by recipients of the copies that will be given. The photos were not tagged. Vista Home Premium and Office 2003 are being used.
Just recently, I have been unable to open .png files. The default program for opening the file type has been unchanged (Windows Photo Gallery). Can anyone tell me the problem?
I am running Vista Ultimate, Windows Live Mail and Word 2000. I can not email a displayed document directly from Word. The email icon is greyed out. I would prefer to not have to move to a later version of Word as with all Microsoft products MS seems intent on taking things that were simple and making them aggrivatingly complicated and annoying. My kingdom for a 'Don't Think For Me' button.
1) Is there a way to be able to email (not as an attachment) from Word 2000 in my environment (using Windows Live Mail).
2) Which versions of Word can you email from using Windows Live Mail? For example, if I upgrade to Word 2007 can I then email? Or from Wird 2008?
I really need this feature as it is a backbone of our internal documentation and reporting system.... I will suffer a Word upgrade if I have to, but just want to make sure it will work before I take the plunge.
Since installing AVG 9 I have a few problems, one which is now known to AVG that attachements cannot be sent in the likes of Yahoo and Sky Mail, this has gone to the developers.
This one may not be AV related so thought I would ask here.
I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.
When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.
I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.
Computer is just a year old, came with Works installed. For some unknown reason the problem began: could not open document files with Works. This worked in the past, but suddenly I could not open these files.
I have a persistant re occuring problem over the past couple of weeks.
Every few days i try to open various emails via the paperclip with attchments such as .jpg files and the window opens up " Windows cannot find"xxxxxxxx.jpg". Kake sure you have typed the name correctly and then try again."
I can only open them if i save the attachment this happens to all emails in my inbox.
I have cured this in the past by doing a system restore going back a couple of days and things are good for 2 or 3 days then the same thing happens.
Microsoft Office Document Imaging is running perfectly with one exception! I cannot open .mdi files by double clicking them. Although if I open the Office Tool first, then I can quite happily do a File Open sequence and use the .mdi file normally. The .mdi file extension refuses to allow itself to be associated with mspview.exe (the correct executable file) even when I try to do it via Default Progams using the built-in administrator account. No helpful error message just no response (I AM able to associate .mdi with other (incorrect) exe files so it seems to be mspview.exe that Vista has taken a dislike to for some reason. It was working ok until I uninstalled MS Office 2003.
I DID have both Office 2003 & 2007 installed but the older version was redundant. I see no reason why Vista should block this file association unless I have a Registry issue potentially? (And yes I have done several restarts) I can of course do a System Restore (hopefully) but I wondered if anyone had any ideas why I'm having problems? Alternatively, I can re-install Office 2007 completely but that seems to be a bit of a sledgehammer approach.
I have scanned documents and tried to "open with" Works word. It tells me that it cannot open it or the file may be corrupt. What am I doing wrong. (Vista home premium--Canoscan LIDE 70) I have been trying for months.
How do I stop email attachments, Excel, Word, files, etc from parking in the Document Folder. I always choose my own folders to store things I am keeping and likewise deleting them. Having to go into the Doc.
I am unable to paste information from my e-mail or the web to a word document. I receive a message stating that the amount selected is too large, but when I select only one word to copy, the message remains the same.
I have vista home premium when i try and open word docs from the internet or outlook they show as notepad. When i right click to open in a different format i do not get word as an option. does anyone know how to solve this?
I tried moving My Documents folder to my D: drive and now have big problems! The whole folder disappeared. After searching the net for answers I altered some Registry settings (which was stupid I know) but was able to get My Documents folder back under Desktop. Now I don't have a User profile under C:Users, just a Public folder. Here's the good part, if I right-click on My Documents folder in the Start Menu it says that my Location is C:UsersmyUserName which clearly doesn't exist.
Then if I click on myUserName in Windows Explorer it has every folder in the right hand pane except for the "Documents" folder but if I expand the tree of the username on the left hand side of Windows Explorer it has a Documents folder and all my files are dispayed in the right hand pane. Also my NTUSER.dat file is in myUserName folder under Desktop not under C:Users**** where it's supposed to be. Have tried System Restore several times but it makes no difference. Does any of this make any sense? How restore my "Personal" folder under C:Users and the proper registry settings that I should have?
Word 2007 (on vista 32 bit) crashed this morning. It won't open again without crashing. It opens the window, I can see that it is asking me to open the recued document, on the left side, but then it crashes... looks for a problem... nothing... then it says "An Unknown error has occured" - but the litle window has "Endnote x1" in the header. - I have Endnote X1, obviously, and they don't work wonderfully together, but never this kind of problem. I've installed all the recent service packs, in the last few days. Word updates itself I'm pretty sure. Explorer crashes all the time, I think that it adobe related though *sigh*.
When I receive a Word document as an attachment in an email Windows Mail will not let me open it. The file is in the email and has the proper icon and file extension. When I try to open it it asks if I want to Save or Open the document; I choose Open. The I get an error message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." I can save the attachment to my desktop and then open it no problem but I don't think that I should have to do that. I should be able to double click on any attachment and it should open with the proper program, right?
I reinstalled Vista and then updated with SP1 when I try to open an email attachment that is a Word .doc file it will not open and gives an error message that the file type does not have an application associated with it. The .doc file extension is associated with Word and I have re-associated it several times. The file will open if I save it elsewhere or drag it to my desktop and then open it. Is there something in the registry or elsewhere.
I have received several word docs and I am not able to open them. I have windows vista and just installed microsoft office home & student. I have tried several things but nothing is working.
