Until yesterday, I would create a backup to my word documents by inserting a CD and following the prompts erasing old files and burning updated files. Today I inserted the CD, received the prompt to erase; erased; reinserted the CD and nothing happened. Can't get a prompt of any kind. I'm using Vista on a Gateway laptop.

I have a problem finding Word 2007 files from the Search field in Windows Explorer. Example: I have a file named "test.docx" in "My Documents", and I can see that file right in the Windows Explorer window. However, if I type, say ".docx", or "test", in the Search field in the top right-hand corner of Explorer, the search comes up empty. I can, however, get the search function to find the file if I: use the Search item on the Start Menu use the "Advanced Search" options in Windows Explorer, and have it search all indexed locations use the "Advanced Search" options in Windows Explorer, and have it search in non-indexed locations, hidden and system files
This problem only seems to exist with .docx files, so this may actually be an issue of the Office 2007 indexer rather than Vista. It looks like the Word indexer does not properly store the location information of the file. Oh, and the problem I have may or may not be related to the fact that on my system I have (of course) relocated the My Documents folder to a separate partition. Are others seeing this, too? Is there a fix for this?

I cannot believe what a mess your operating system is. I can't even open attachments received in my emails because your silly system is so poorly designed. I think it may be time to scrap my new HP system and go out an buy a real computer from Apple. If Bill Gates had to compensate Windows users for all the time wasted dealing with his damned OSs, he would for sure not be the world's richest man, and deservedly so. I'm fed up.

Since migrating to Windows Mail a year ago on a new PC running Vista, I've been unable to open, or to save and open, email attachments received in .pdf or .jpg format. When I try to open .pdf attachments, I get an error message reading, "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." If I save a .pdf attachment in Adobe Reader and then try to open it, I get a message saying, "Adobe Reader could not open [file] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I run Adobe Reader 8. Where do I look to find a solution to this problem? Is it related to the similar problem with JPEG's?

Word 2007 (on vista 32 bit) crashed this morning. It won't open again without crashing. It opens the window, I can see that it is asking me to open the recued document, on the left side, but then it crashes... looks for a problem... nothing... then it says "An Unknown error has occured" - but the litle window has "Endnote x1" in the header. - I have Endnote X1, obviously, and they don't work wonderfully together, but never this kind of problem. I've installed all the recent service packs, in the last few days. Word updates itself I'm pretty sure. Explorer crashes all the time, I think that it adobe related though *sigh*.

When I receive a Word document as an attachment in an email Windows Mail will not let me open it. The file is in the email and has the proper icon and file extension. When I try to open it it asks if I want to Save or Open the document; I choose Open. The I get an error message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." I can save the attachment to my desktop and then open it no problem but I don't think that I should have to do that. I should be able to double click on any attachment and it should open with the proper program, right?

I reinstalled Vista and then updated with SP1 when I try to open an email attachment that is a Word .doc file it will not open and gives an error message that the file type does not have an application associated with it. The .doc file extension is associated with Word and I have re-associated it several times. The file will open if I save it elsewhere or drag it to my desktop and then open it. Is there something in the registry or elsewhere.

I have installed Works Suite 2006 in my Vista Home Premium computer. Everything works fine apart from Word 2002. I am unable to open Word by clicking on document files. If I double click on a document file in Explorer nothing happens. If I right click and select Open With, and then click on wordicon, nothing happens. I am also unable to launch Word from the Works Suite program launcher. I can open Word, no problem, and it appears to work fine, but to edit a document I have to search for it from within Word, which is often inconvient. I have un-installed the suite, and re-installed it, but the problem still persists.

My Microsoft Mail in Vista moves received and sent emails in a very odd manner. Rather than keep emails sorted strictly by date received and/or sent, the emails are moved. For example, if I reply to an email received and it had a subject line, a return email may be buried deep based on who sent the original and the subject. This makes finding the emails very difficult. I would like all emails received and sent to be sorted based on date received and/or sent, similar to Outlook.

In desperation, after not getting the answer on the Vista.Genearl group, I'm posting this to as many groups as I think may be able to help as I suspect that the problem could occur in any MS operating system and is not Vista specific. It might just even be associated with MS Word itself.
The problem is as stated in the subject. After I did a factory reformat of a pre-installed Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire L3600 and re-installed my apps, including MS Office 2007 Plus I found that when I right-click the desktop and choose "New", most of options to open a new folder, shortcut, Bitmap Image and documents in the Office suite are there except for MS Word. It used to be there, now it's not and as far as I can see it is the only one missing.
In fact Word shows up when I installed MS Office on my wife's Dell laptop as a test. I've un- and re-installed the entire Office suite to no avail. How has this happened, but more importantly, how can I get it back in the list? It's the feature of the right-click procedure, other than opening a new folder, that I find the most useful.

I purchased a WD 500 GB external, and used windows backup. It worked fine. I was planing to return my laptop for repairs because it was making funny sounds, so i deleted all my documents/music/pictures and so on. When i went to restore everything, I got a pretty nasty problem.
everything was restored, but stored on the F: drive, which is the external. when ever i would start up the computer, without the external plugged in, it would give me an error saying that the desktop wasn't found and that it was in different folder. there was also a problem with Microsoft office, which when ever i would open Word 2007 it would say "the office open xml file Normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."
then it would give me a second error message "Word cannot open the existing file. (normal) i would also get this same error when opening up any existing word file. when i would write things up and then go to save it, it says that "word has insufficient memory. do you want to save document one as rescued document 2?" i have a similar problem with itunes

Accidentally deleted this folder from C:, and tho I have the files for it on D: (the green 'documents' folder), I cannot access them by clicking start/documents.
How do I fix this blunder ?
Also, probably a post here somewhere, but I tried to do a system restore in the hope that would fix it, but have no restore points...thought this was done automatically?

I am running Vista and Windows Mail.I have 3 Embark.com contacts that does not receive mail sent from Windows mail. I can send from Web Mail using my same address and they receive. Embarq and Road Runner have not found the problem. They say there is no blocks on either end. I do not get any bounce backs or errow messages when mail is sent. I have sent test to all of 35 contacts and all receive except the Embarq.com contacts. I have corresponded with these Embarq contacts for 1-2 years with no problem until mid February. Then something closed the gate. Road Runner has traced the mail and it appears as if the contact received the mail but he didn't.
