Folders & Docs Disappeared

Mar 23, 2008

so the other day I accidentally messed up something with the properties of all of my folders.... In the attributes I must have clicked on something, not sure what, but now I'm missing a great deal of information.... I tried doing a system restore, but it has only brought back a few things but not everything....

Subfolder WITHIN Deleted Folders Disappeared

Mar 18, 2009

I have Windows Vista and Windows Mail. When I purchased the computer a little over a year ago, I imported mail from Outlook Express. In Windows Mail, I had set up several folders that directly receive incoming mail: Inbox, Business, Junk Mail, and 3 subfolders (for individual personal emails) WITHIN Deleted folder.

So mail that goes directly into the 3 subfolders WITHIN the Delete folder are deleted permanently at will by me with no secondary step as a safeguard as they are already within the Delete folder.

When I delete mail from Inbox, Business and Junk folders, they move to the main Delete folder and stay there until I permanently delete. No mail in Delete folder or subfolders is set to permanently delete automatically. Further, in Advanced Properties of each folder, no copies were being saved to Server.

All of a sudden the folders on the left hand side of the screen have disappeared. Burning Word Docs (.doc) To CD

Until yesterday, I would create a backup to my word documents by inserting a CD and following the prompts erasing old files and burning updated files. Today I inserted the CD, received the prompt to erase; erased; reinserted the CD and nothing happened. Can't get a prompt of any kind. I'm using Vista on a Gateway laptop.

Finding Word 2007 Docs

Mar 23, 2008

I have a problem finding Word 2007 files from the Search field in Windows Explorer. Example: I have a file named "test.docx" in "My Documents", and I can see that file right in the Windows Explorer window. However, if I type, say ".docx", or "test", in the Search field in the top right-hand corner of Explorer, the search comes up empty. I can, however, get the search function to find the file if I: use the Search item on the Start Menu use the "Advanced Search" options in Windows Explorer, and have it search all indexed locations use the "Advanced Search" options in Windows Explorer, and have it search in non-indexed locations, hidden and system files

This problem only seems to exist with .docx files, so this may actually be an issue of the Office 2007 indexer rather than Vista. It looks like the Word indexer does not properly store the location information of the file. Oh, and the problem I have may or may not be related to the fact that on my system I have (of course) relocated the My Documents folder to a separate partition. Are others seeing this, too? Is there a fix for this?

Replacing Missing Docs And Settings Folder

Accidentally deleted this folder from C:, and tho I have the files for it on D: (the green 'documents' folder), I cannot access them by clicking start/documents.

How do I fix this blunder ?

Also, probably a post here somewhere, but I tried to do a system restore in the hope that would fix it, but have no restore points...thought this was done automatically?

AVG Has Disappeared

Feb 24, 2010

I am running a Vista 64-bit platform with a VMware guest, using Vista 32-bit. Although I have Windows Defender running in the guest system, I have not had any anti-virus software (I use McAfee on the host system). Last night, I downloaded and installed the AVG-free anti-virus software for the guest system. It was working as intended when I shut down the computer.

This morning, in booting to the guest system, there is no AVG software in sight. The downloadable program from AVG is not even found in the Downloads folder! Windows Defender is still operable, and telling me that I do not have an anti-virus program installed.

Multiple Folders And Sub Folders And Such

Jul 29, 2009

I am just configuring Windows Mail in Vista. In Outlook (on XP), I had multiple email accounts linked to different folder structures. Each account had a different set of folders. In Windows Mail, it seems everything is being downloaded into one Inbox. Can I re-create the separate folders for each email account in WinMail?

Also, my gmail accounts folder structure was synchronized with the folder structure on the web using IMAP. Can I do that in WinMail, too? If so, how (or point me to directions)?

Files Have Disappeared!

Jul 29, 2008

I backed up my files onto CD (work files). Made a number of CDs. I'm on dell inspiron 9300, w/ xp and did an upgrade to vista using an in place install. My understanding was that the programs AND files were to be carried over onto the new OS. All of my programs and applications stayed. But my files...gone! can't find any of them. And all but one of my CDs are good--except that for some reason the most important files are in an empty folder on one of the CDs, many months worth of work related documents- I must have messed it up when backing it up. Is there anyway to find the files that vista was supposed to keep? I picked up an external hard drive today when I realized how little space I had left but not soon enough to use it to back up before.

CD/DVD Burner Disappeared

Mar 23, 2008

I bought a new ASUS M51SN laptop last month running Windows Vista. I have subsequently loaded MS Office 2003, Skype, Norton SystemWorks and NERO8. I recently upgraded Vista with SP1, Nero, Skype and Norton to their latest versions and the ASUS Bios to 304. While I had a number of software problems prior to these upgrades, I placed my faith in the Vista upgrade, but am still left with a number of irritating problems.

My DVD burner has disappeared from Windows and Norton while Nero is still happy to test it (Diskspeed). The device manager says everything is good, but I cannot see the DVD in either Windows Explorer or My Computer. In the event log, I can see that the unit has encountered a number of bad block events, as well as a number of errors during a paging operation...............
