Number Of Installs On Different Drives Of Same Computer
Feb 16, 2009
Just obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.
1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??
2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?

I just did a clean install of Vista ultimate x64. I'm having a problem, though. It seems to be very unstable when I'm starting up - if I try to open programs while the OS is still loading all my run-at-startup programs, it'll just lock up. That's not the biggest problem, though. For some reason, if I try to install ANYTHING (i.e. quicktime, my video drivers, the windows updates), the computer will install it until it gets to about 20-25% of the install, and then just slow down to a complete stop. Like, at first the progress bar won't advance. After that, the desktop icons won't highlight when you mouse over them. Then you can't move windows (minimize, maximize, etc.), and finally, you can't move your mouse.
I just had vista ultimate x64 working on my computer a few days ago, and it was stable. I had to reinstall it because I downloaded window's updates, and there's one that (after some research) I found can cause some computers to not be able to boot. I suffered that problem.

"Somewhere in California - At 8:30 PDT with the release of Snoopy Linux 2.1 and Goober Linux 1.0, the number of Linux distributions finally surpassed the number of actual Linux users." "We've been expecting it for some time," Merrill Lynch technology analyst Tom Shayes said, "but this is a little sooner than most expected. We've seen explosive growth in the number of Linux distributions, in fact my nephew just put out LittleLinux Chart Tommy Linux 1.1 last week."

I recently rebuilt most of my computer and upgraded to windows Vista and
now my computer won't detect my USB flash drives. I know the USB ports
are working because my mouse is USB and it works fine. I've tried
uninstalling the USB drivers and letting them reinstall but that didn't
work at all.

I have a 100gb Seagate portable hard drive, which is split 50/50 between an HFS partition for leopard, and a NTFS partition for windows. When I added the windows partition, it asked me what letter to give it, so to make it memorable, I gave it Z:/. Now, after it has been plugged in a few times, I see in "Computer" that is listed many times, as "Local disk ('Letter')". I removed the drive letter setting completely, thinking that would help, but it didn't change anything, now the real listing just says G instead of Z. but the phantom drives are still there.
the REAL listing for the drive is the Seagate NTFS (G/) one. However all of the other ones work as well and show the contents of the drive. Now, I have another portable hard drive that is 500GB, that is also split half and half the same way, and it never does this. is there any way to force vista to double check it's mounted drives to see if they all really exist?

Just installed Outlook 2007 today. Seems that when opening Outlook or when sending messages that Windows installer is repeatedly running before things are done. States gathering necessary information or configuring Outlook in notification boxes and then things will finally process once all this stops. Is this a none issue with Outlook and Vista that one has to live with?

At our house we have 4 HP Compaq nx6325 laptops, they came with Win xp on them but have the windows vista capable logo on them. We have upgraded two of them with windows vista home basic which has been working fine in most cases. But their seems to be something wrong with the cd drives. Sometimes when the computers are turned on the CD drives are missing in the "computer" location and when this is the case if you put a CD in it will no work. But a quick restart and it will work fine. This is the case with the two vista laptops. The XP ones, one works perfectly and the other will only read some discs (like music CD's).
Secondly my personal vista laptops CD drive used to be fine but i was having a hard drive problem and got a new one installed vista onto it and then i had this problem.
Just to clarify my vista laptop used to work fine the other did not, i got a new hard drive installed vista again and then had the same problem as the other one.
Our computers are fully updated with all the HP vista updates and service pack 1. i have tried manually updating the CD drive drivers but could not find any either in the internet or through device manager.

I have a Dell computer, had it about three weeks. I have two hard drives in a serial ATA Raid 0 stripe 500GB each. They are controlled by Intel matrix storage manager software. I want to have the two hard drives separate, like drive C and Drive D In the Bios I have two choices ATA or Raid, I have tried both ways to have them separate, however still can't. I have to say that I found this forum by chance, by goodness I am glad I did with drivers for my scanner and printer.

i have recently bought a Toshiba L500 (Australian model) and played for awhile and have realised the number 1 keys is hard to push, so when i press it down mutiple 11111111111111111111 appear and becomes stuck and when i un-jig it, it stops and pushing down is harder than the surrounding numeric numbers so it definitely indicates something is wrong. (top row of numbers) can it be fixed at a service center or go back and get a new 1, or are there other options?

I have been using my PC for a few months, and it needed to get sent in to a techie a week or so ago who swapped around some hardware trying to fix a problem. After it came back, but before I turned it on, I installed a new RAM stick. When I turn it on it needs to be activated straight away. Sure, I thought, major hardware change, I will just activate it again, like I phone activated before. But I can't activate. When I try and get it to phone activate, the screen comes up with the number to ring, and a space to type in my 'confirmation ID' given to me by the phone service. But to get my 'Confirmation ID' I need to give an 'Installation ID to the phone service, and I don't have an 'Installation ID'. I cannot activate by internet either, My PC doesn't have internet access. I put in a dial up modem, but whenever I try to set up an internet connection, I just get cryptic errors. I should add that I can't do anything on the PC in the meantime, every time I start up I just get this problem.

I noticed that my 280GB hard disk is seemingly suddenly down to 20GB. I see that my used shadow storage space is 86GB and the allocated shadow space is 88GB and the max shadow space is "unbounded." I have the commands to resize the max space, but I don't know what to resize it to. I know I have about 150GB of programs, files, etc on my c: drive. Can you advise? Is it possible to determine the actual number of restore points that are kept and then simply decrease that number? It would seem that with most problems you wouldn't necessarily want to go back more than 3 or 4 points, would you? I just don't know how the shadow size corresponds to the number of restore points that are kept. 80+ GB just seems completely unreasonable! Incidentally, I also have a recovery drive, presumably created by the computer mfgr (Dell) with 15GB total, and 5GB free.

Does the different product key automatically activate?

BIOS setting demystified
I find that when it comes to people building their own PCs (or tweaking their existing rig) then the mysteries that lay within the BIOS settings are scarier to most people than anything hardware related. Let’s do something about that!
I can see why the myriad of BIOS settings instill part excitement and part fear in many people. After all, it’s almost impossible to connect two bits of hardware together in the wrong way, and hard to break anything unless you are being particularly clumsy or using hulk-like strength to force incompatible parts together. But when it comes to the BIOS settings, it seems like there are an infinite number of settings that can be fiddled with, and each of the individual settings seems to have dozens of possible values.........

I have this problem with Vista64. After every updates from M$ I get this error: The file /windows/system32/hall.dll is broken and the error number 0xc00000e9. If I am a standard user I would have no chance to recover it. Sometimes it helps to put the install dvd in the drive and wait what happens. But sometimes I must recover this file directly from DVD with another computer and copy it to my system. Finally after approx. 2 hours of playing my system alives, but with the fear what the future brings. Has anybody same problem? If yes how do you solve it?

I came into the office this morning to find my computer (Toshiba Portege, M700) in a state that seemed to be hung up in the midst of a windows update reboot. So I waited for a while, and nothing happened. The last normal reboot seems to have taken place sometime prior to about 3am Central time Sunday morning, when a Windows update was done (so it seems from Event Viewer). After that time, there are a large number of DCOM errors - things like WSearch failing to start, etc. A half hour later, tired of waiting, I decided to hard reset. Once I did that, the machine has yet to come up to a running state outside of safe mode. Among the things (I didn't catalog each and every reboot, etc.) tried were reboots into normal mode with just about every non-essential piece of software disabled, uninstallation of Sophos antivirus and Adobe Acrobat Pro and other biggies, etc. Never did I get a "normal mode" reboot to work. I've also restored the system to several set points prior to the weekend, to no avail. I will post some event viewer text when I have the chance tomorrow, but I'm totally dead in the water. I'm posting this note just in case this happened to anyone else this weekend or at their last Windows Update.
