I am trying to number file names sequentially. It works, but not how I would like. I am trying to number file names as: Filename (10), Filename (11), Filename (12). What I get is: Filename (10), Filename (2), Filename (3)... How do I do what I want?
View 4 RepliesWhen I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi wright games and i just finished a new version of the old mmorpg ragnarok online and well all te file names are wrong when read on a vista computer. for example.(????????????)was changed to(_??AI??U)the only reason i can think of is the os is changeing the file name. the language is korien i think.... but i use it for all encrypted file names so no 1 else can edit them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."
Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.
Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.
When I turned my computer on today it seems that all of my filenames have 'disappeared' - the files are still called the same that I named them, but instead of them showing the titles, they either show the date modified or only certain details. I mainly have music on my hard drive, and now the folder looks like this:
As you can see, on the left in the folder tree, the path is showing up, the files are still there etc, but instead of the track titles, there is now only the artist and album? I have tried shift and view, tried different views, tried changing the folder view to pictures and videos etc, I have also completely scanned the drives and there doesn't seem to be any problems? Under 'folder options' I have tried showing all extensions etc, showing hidden files, different customizing of views:...........

The primary reason for setting up this VPN is to be able to access my home network shares, networked printers, VNC, as well as web pages not accessible to the internet on my laptop while away from home. While testing out my VPN at a friends house I found that I cannot access my network shares, etc by their host name, but am able to access some things but only by using the local IP address of the computer in my home network.
The setup:
VPN Server: Windows Vista Ultimate (x64 SP1)
VPN Client: Windows Vista Home Premium (x64 SP1)
I know I am lousy at explaining things if there is any more info needed let me know. Please note that I'm not a network admin by trade so please keep that in mind with any responses.
Does anyone know when/why MS gave us a bunch of fonts such as "Batang & BatangChe & Gungsuh & GungsuhChe" and "Microsoft YaHei?" There are many more of these strange looking font names in my fonts folder and each font takes up > 15,000,000 bytes. I tried to delete 1 or 2 of them but that's a no can do. Was there a specific "hotfix" we applied and what is/are the reason(s) for these fonts?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new here so excuse me if I make any mistakes, but suddenly, I've noticed that my folders inside %ProgramData% are not showing properly, it wasn't like this before and I'd really like to have this solved because this irritates me. I've already tried selecting "Show filenames" in the context menu but this option is not available in this map. And all my other folders are showing the files properly.

Log on to = www.hotmail.com
User name = my hotmail email account
Password = my hotmail password
When I start IE and go to Hotmail I do not get logged on automatically. Am I missing something or have I misunderstood what the stored user names and password functionality should do?
I was fiddling with an application that logs you on by using face recognition but i decided to remove it as i just wanted to play with it. Now my log on screen makes me click my name before i can enter my password. how can i get it back so i dont have to click my name?

I have an Acer laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1 connected via a wireless network to a Desktop PC running Windows XP Professional SP3.
Attached to the Desktop is a Maxtor USB hard disk which is used for backup of the Desktop. I can read/write from the laptop from/to the Maxtor. When I use the Vista Backup and Control Centre on the laptop to establish backup on the Maxtor, I can browse to the folder on the Maxtor, but when I enter a username and password I get the following:
If I use an administrator username on the desktop pc I get:
‘No mapping between account names and security IDs was done (0x80070534). Please ensure that the username is valid’ … (it is!)
If I use a limited username I get :
You need full control permission for the network share. Make the user a co-owner, with Full Control. The network share cannot be on a computer running Windows XP Home. (0x8100002A)’ As I say above, I am using XP Professional SP3 on the Desktop Computer.
how to network two Vista machines using their respective machine names? I'm only able to access shared folders using IP addresses. - The two machines are a laptop running Vista Business x64 and a desktop running Vista Home Premium x64. - Both machines have File Sharing, Network Discovery, and Password Protected Sharing turned on. - They are on the same workgroup (no domain). - I am able to see the machines in Network Explorer, but if I double-click on them, all I see is the printer (not the shared folders) or I get an error message telling me the machine is inaccessible. Both machines have been assigned a static IP address by the router.

In a Vista Windows Explorer window, what is the right pane's name? There is the Layout/Menu Bar/Details Pane, Preview Pane & Navigation Pane but I don't see a name for this pane....I think maybe it is called the Folder Pane or Display Pane or the Folder Display Pane?
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen i upgraded my vista business to vista ultimate full retail, it stopped half way through, so i had to do a clean install instead. when i booted my windows and looked on the c drive there were a series of folders with strange names. i suspect this is backups from the upgrade which failed, i rescued my files i needed out of the folders, and tried to delete the ones the upgrade left behind but it wont let me. And it says to set it up but i dont know what the incoming e-mail server type is. And dont know what IMAP or POP3 is and what goes in there for the incoming mail server. As well as the outgoing e-mail server name (SMTP) I'm so clueless and usually confused when it comes to technical stuff on cumputers.

(top row of numbers) can it be fixed at a service center or go back and get a new 1, or are there other options?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using my PC for a few months, and it needed to get sent in to a techie a week or so ago who swapped around some hardware trying to fix a problem. After it came back, but before I turned it on, I installed a new RAM stick. When I turn it on it needs to be activated straight away. Sure, I thought, major hardware change, I will just activate it again, like I phone activated before. But I can't activate. When I try and get it to phone activate, the screen comes up with the number to ring, and a space to type in my 'confirmation ID' given to me by the phone service. But to get my 'Confirmation ID' I need to give an 'Installation ID to the phone service, and I don't have an 'Installation ID'. I cannot activate by internet either, My PC doesn't have internet access. I put in a dial up modem, but whenever I try to set up an internet connection, I just get cryptic errors. I should add that I can't do anything on the PC in the meantime, every time I start up I just get this problem.
View 9 Replies View RelatedJust obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.
1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??
2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?
