Computer Not Detecting USB Flash Drives
Apr 23, 2009
I recently rebuilt most of my computer and upgraded to windows Vista and
now my computer won't detect my USB flash drives. I know the USB ports
are working because my mouse is USB and it works fine. I've tried
uninstalling the USB drivers and letting them reinstall but that didn't
work at all.

I've installed a couple of flash drives that are supposed to support ReadyBoost in Vista on a couple of my Vista computers, however I'm not seeing much on an increase in speed. I've looked at the Task Manager, but I'm not seeing any type of memory size increase either. How does this work? Would it be better to install more ram rather than this setup?

Any limits on how many flash drives you can use in xp, Vista, W7? Another words, if you have a lot of flash drives, will xp, Vista, W7complain about to much hardware?

Just obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.
1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??
2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?

I have a 100gb Seagate portable hard drive, which is split 50/50 between an HFS partition for leopard, and a NTFS partition for windows. When I added the windows partition, it asked me what letter to give it, so to make it memorable, I gave it Z:/. Now, after it has been plugged in a few times, I see in "Computer" that is listed many times, as "Local disk ('Letter')". I removed the drive letter setting completely, thinking that would help, but it didn't change anything, now the real listing just says G instead of Z. but the phantom drives are still there.
the REAL listing for the drive is the Seagate NTFS (G/) one. However all of the other ones work as well and show the contents of the drive. Now, I have another portable hard drive that is 500GB, that is also split half and half the same way, and it never does this. is there any way to force vista to double check it's mounted drives to see if they all really exist?

At our house we have 4 HP Compaq nx6325 laptops, they came with Win xp on them but have the windows vista capable logo on them. We have upgraded two of them with windows vista home basic which has been working fine in most cases. But their seems to be something wrong with the cd drives. Sometimes when the computers are turned on the CD drives are missing in the "computer" location and when this is the case if you put a CD in it will no work. But a quick restart and it will work fine. This is the case with the two vista laptops. The XP ones, one works perfectly and the other will only read some discs (like music CD's).
Secondly my personal vista laptops CD drive used to be fine but i was having a hard drive problem and got a new one installed vista onto it and then i had this problem.
Just to clarify my vista laptop used to work fine the other did not, i got a new hard drive installed vista again and then had the same problem as the other one.
Our computers are fully updated with all the HP vista updates and service pack 1. i have tried manually updating the CD drive drivers but could not find any either in the internet or through device manager.

When I put a disk into my CD/DVD drive and then go into Computer and click my E: drive, all I get is the 'Please insert disc into E: ...' message. Up until a few days ago the exact same discs were working with my system, and they're working because I've run them on my PS3 to check.

I have my destop system which is having preinsalled windows vista business version and here it is detecting automatically without installing the imate CD. Is that vista home version is not supporting imate connectivity? I installed the Imate installation CD also but still did not detect in vista home version.

I am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS.
I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. When I click on the "Connect to" in the start menu, nothing happens. When I click on "connect to a network" in control panel, I get an error loading wizards message saying module not found. The card is an Inrel pro wireless 3945ABG and IS turned on. All critical windows updates have been installed.

I recently started supporting a remote site of 4 vista, 1 xp 2 mac users. They have a networked HPCP1515n printer. Original vista users are fine they can print to it but two new users to this printer cannot get vista to detect the printer. When I run the network install drivers they get the following: error 1327.Invalid Drive z:. I have tried the usb install but that fails similiarly too. Vista does not detect the printer but older users who were connected are fine. I have tried installing from local c: all fail. i have tried older versions of the driver all fail. The users have profiles set up to z: Attached is a screen shot of the error

How to detect whether readyboost is active or not? I have a 2GB USB Sandisk with U3, it was once used for readyboost, but no more (at least, I don't want it to be). Apparently, because it has U3 on it, when the autoplay comes up one doesn't even see readyboost as an option under 'General Options'. However, if one does a 'properties' and navigates to the 'Readyboost' tab, it is always set as if it were being used - even though it doesn't appear like it actually is.
I have another USB flashdrive that I may occasionally use as a readyboost when working with large spreadsheets, databases or projects. BTW so far, I'm not seeing a big performance boost from readyboost. My understanding of may be flawed; but, I think all it does is cache to the USB stick, which is faster than the hard drive.

I hope to find a solution to this problem. I own a Vista Home Premium (32 bit) with SP1. I connected the Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder with USB to PC, turn on the camcorder in Play back mode, but Windows Vista remained silent - no detection of my camcorder. Sometime my Windows Vista just hung and FROZEN...I remove USB cable from Camcorder, Windows Vista is back to work normal. the Canon website and there it is -> the camcorder *IS* compatible with vista and doesn't need any driver. I called Canon technical Tech and he told me Yes, Canon Vixia HF10 is comptaible with Vista. I have also installed Windows XP SP3 on my laptop and tried on Windows XP, no problem there - the camcorder was detected immediately.

I have a Dell computer, had it about three weeks. I have two hard drives in a serial ATA Raid 0 stripe 500GB each. They are controlled by Intel matrix storage manager software. I want to have the two hard drives separate, like drive C and Drive D In the Bios I have two choices ATA or Raid, I have tried both ways to have them separate, however still can't. I have to say that I found this forum by chance, by goodness I am glad I did with drivers for my scanner and printer.

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right spot...
I recently bought a 2GB (SanDisk Micro Cruzer) to use for ReadyBoost. It worked for a few days, but now it doesn't... I right click on the drive and click properties, and it says that the device is full, and when I click on the "ReadyBoost" tab it says that there isn't enough space available... yet I have nothing on the drive except for the empty folders and U3 installation that it came with.
If I format the drive, will it still be ReadyBoost capable? After all, that is the whole reason I bought the drive.

Check if the file msacm32.drv is present in your Windows system32 folder. If not, copy it from another PC (that has the same version of Windows) and place the file in the system32 folder. This applies to Vista and 7 64Bit but in the SysWOW64 directory which is the folder for the 32 bit programs running on the 32bit virtual machine.
A very common sound problem is an incorrect or missing registry key for msacm32.drv discussed in the preceding.
Launch Registry Editor by typing regedit at Run command.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:
For XP and Vista 32Bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDrivers32
3. On the right pane, and check for existence of “wavemapper” registry subkey, the mail culprit ...

I have a flash drive that I like to use. It is heavily used and often filled to almost all of its capacity. Just a few minutes ago I was using it with my XP computer and I opened up one of my folders to find that all of my files were gone to be replaced with folders and files with strange characters. If I try deleting anything, it says the directory does not exist. All that I can do is to format it. After formatting, I plugged it into my Vista but it said that it was corrupted or unreadable. I am wondering if it is a virus or if I should just get a new flash drive.

I have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?
