May 16, 2009Okay so last night my power went out for like half a second, and I was on my computer and it turned off also.
So how do I check if everything is okay?

Mar 25, 2009I know this question keeps coming up but I have yet to find a solution. Basically my Vista screensavers reset to nothing everytime I reboot my machine. I can preview them, I can set a time and it works once I "apply" it. But as soon as I turn off the machine and then reboot it has reset to nothing, and I have to set it again to get it to work. This is quite annoying. I do not have any wireless devices installed, and all of my Power Managment options are turned off as well.

Jun 11, 2008Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? .

Apr 24, 2008It started two days ago. When I woke up my computer was on but there was no display. I rebooted the machine and it it came up fine but seemed to shut abnormaly. Later that day when I tried to remote control into my machine I was able to get a black screen (so the connection was established but know video.) When I got home it was the same thing: the computer was on but no video and keyboard and mouse did not work. It seemed though, after looking at the logs, that the computer was functioning because there were logs created during the time it was "off." Looking through the logs I could see nothing abrnormal. Truly I don't know what I was looking for? Anyway, in power options I turned off the feature to shut down monitor after certain time. Turned off screen saver.
The sleep mode was already off. I was connected to PC via remote control from work and machine rebooted itself. All it said in log was: The previous system shutdown at 7:30:29 PM on 4/24/2008 was unexpected. Not sure if the reboot and the aforementioned issue is related. Anyway, I am not sure why this started happening. I did install a game call Rome Univerisalus or some such name. I uninstalled the game when I started having problems. It didn't work anyway. I am using Vista 64. I just recently built the computer. Didn't experience any problems until recently. Does anyone know how I can figure out what is going on? And even better, how to fix. I am thinking of using the restore point of before I installed the game.
Wireless Connection Drops When The Computer With The Router Is Turned On?
Oct 26, 2008My friends computer uses a Netgear router and his computer runs on XP to which I try to connect for internet access. When his computer is turned OFF, I can access the internet no problem. However, when his computer is ON, I can not connect!!
-Vista 64 bit, service pack 1 and is completely up-to-date
-All hardware drivers are up todate with no hardware problems
-DLink has good reception with 1.20 driver (D-Link WMA 510)
-Router computer is XP, up-to-date drivers. Computer uses Netgear router

Computer In A Low Power State
Jan 29, 2009I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.
I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.
Turn Off The Power, Computer Goes To Sleep
May 4, 2008The 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.
Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.
Power Fluctuation Computer Refused Boot Up
May 22, 2008I have a computer that was working very well, but lately when I was working on a important project, there was a power fluctuation for a couple of times (I thought that was normal) but after the last power fluctuation my computer refused to boot up. There seems to be a failure of some kind?..but I need to get the projects back that are still in that disk.

Apr 16, 2009Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.
I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.
I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.
I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?
Set The Power Options For The Computer To "go To Sleep" In 20 Minutes
Dec 5, 2009I've Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba P200 Laptop and here's the tummy-turning experience I'm having. I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

Dec 20, 2008When I start my laptop up, just normally, I log in. I have that thing where I have to log in using a username and password, something that I downloaded and put into my registry. Anyway, all the time, when I log in, it takes forever to load up, it just stays as welcome and doesnt load. I left it for half an hour and it still hadnt loaded! So, I turned it off and on again, and it worked. But, a couple of times, I had to turn it off and on about 5 times ,and when it didnt load, I had to start it again in safe mode. THEN it worked. But, I hate safe mode!

Sep 16, 2009I am using Vista Home Premium 64bit and Trend Micro anti virus+ anti spyware. I was playing 2moons for about three weeks before this happened. Changes that have occured include me being made an admisinstrator and UAC being turned off. I started playing 2moons and after a minute it froze up. Trend Micro alerted me that a program was trying to make unauthorized changes and it didn't help when I allowed or didn't allow said change.It now happens everytime I run 2moons but only that program. I tracked it to my LocalTemp folder and its name fluxuates. Its called yvnta.sys and will move around the first three-four letters each time it tries to change something. I scanned it with TM but it found nothing. its about 10 kb. Is this a legit sys file, if not should i delete it? Let me know if you need more info. I moved it to the recycle bin and ran the program agian, now there is another file named yvatn.sys. they are now both in the recycle bin. Could it be coming from 2moons?

Feb 6, 2009Every time I boot up I get an alert telling me that Defender has is not turned on. I turn it on an everything is hunky dory until the next time I boot up and we have to go through the same process again. This is only a recent thing and as far as I can tell the system is clear of viruses and spyware. Can anyone offer me any insight? (It may or may not be relevant but anti-virus software (Kaspersky 7.0) is suddenly not visible to the Security Centre either. Jun 5, 2008i bought an extra 2gb of mem (same brand,ocz reaper, but diff timing 3-4-4-15) currently installed is 4-4-4-15, for a upgrade to 4gb on my pc. currently, im running on win x64, sp1 with nvidia geforce 8800 gtx, my mobo (msi p6n sli platinum, intel) bios is v1.1. i can't install the latest bios ver 1.6, win won't let me. now, when in put in those 2 gb sticks my windows boot up really slow my cpu is playing between 90 - 100 % usage, sometimes my screen is black with only my cursor on the screen. i know that those new 2gb of mem are working fine i used them in replacement of my old ones but only on 2gb
config. i'm thinking of reformatting my hd and installing the latest bios ver and reinstall win x64 again with the 4gb at the start, if it will recognize it.
Windows Defender Turned Off
Mar 25, 2008When I start up my computer, I get pop up saying Windows defender is turned off with the red shield with the X on the bar. I try to turn it on but search says no new definitions found. However, when I click on START button and programs and click on Windows defender, I get green shield with checkmark in it. Is it on or off? If off, how do I turn it on.

Jun 8, 2009Running Vista Home Prem;32bit Recently I noticed my HDD loosing about 3 to 4GB of space per day.....this all seemed to start right about the time I installed Vista SP2. I felt the lost was due to System restore rstore points, and, I was right. I turned off Restore which deleted all restore points and available space on my HDD increased back to where it should have been. Under XP you could adjust the size of the HDD reserved for Restore points, I don't believe you can under Vista. My total Restore Point space was taking up around 30GB of my HDD. Does anyone know how much HDD Vista reserves for Restore Points? It just seems to me 30GB is a lot of space to be taken up by Restore and I don't know how much more space would have been taken up by Restore by Sysyem ahd I not deleted all points. I of course have turned it back on and created a Restore Point (and immediately saw I lost 3 GB).....(I was losing about 3 to 4GB per day..and it was ongoing). Losing this much space per restore point....is this acceptable?

However, when I look at file sizes using ShowSize, TreeSize, or just manually looking at folder sizes in the explorer, I can only account for 99 GB of space. I have backup/restore turned off. Where's the rest of the disk space?
