Jun 16, 2009
The monitor just displays the "no signal" message. when the PC is turned off. I have looked long and hard for an answer, Anyone else have an issue with this? I have a 3 year old 19 in Sony Flat screen. I just reinstalled the OS from the 64 bit to the 32 bit and had the same problem with both. I've Goggled this and had no luck finding an answer.

How can you turn off the annoying User Account Control feature without Vista telling that you have turned it off, and having an icon in the system tray telling you that it is turned off?

My hard drive w/ Win XP decided to just up and die. It won't even turn off or send a signal to a monitor. I went out and bought a new computer w/ Vista. My problem is, how do I recover what was on the old hard drive if I can't see anything on a monitor? Will I have to pay a recovery service or is it gone forever?

the display doesn't turn off after the configured time set in the active power plan. The screensaver works fine, so it's not that (for example) a mouse is giving random input. Also, when I shut down the computer, the display jumps to powersaving, so the display works fine. I've already tried a lot of things to solve it........

There is no doubt that all of the security features in Windows Vista will help keep your computer secure. However, these features become less valuable when they are not turned on by default. One feature, known as user account auditing, is not turned on by default. With this feature is turned off, anyone with physical access or remote access to through a hole in your firewall (such an opening for Remote Desktop) can use a brute force attack against your user account for as long as they want without getting noticed at all. How? The default audit security policy is configured to not log any account logon events, successful or failed.
This allows an attacker to try to hack your accounts for as long as it takes to break in. There are a few ways to protect against this that I am going to go over in my next article about the Account Lockout policy. But first, it is important to turn on this account auditing so that you can see who may be trying to break into your accounts. After you have adjusted the auditing security policy, you will be able to see any account attacks including the account that they tried to logon with and where the request came from.
Let's get started and turn on audition for failed logon events:
Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the box and hit Enter.
Navigate through Local Policies and Audit Policy.
Right click on Audit account logon events policy and select Properties.
Check the Failure box and hit OK.
Right click on Audit logon events policy and select Properties.
Check the Failure box and hit OK. Your screen should now look like the figure below:
Close Local Security Policy editor.
Your computer has now been configured to log all failed user account logon attempts....

I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? To reach the power button on the laptop you must first raise the lid which there is not room to do

I added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........

i have only one monitor, and somehow it is being treat as though its the secondary monitor in a dual monitor set up. i cannot view my start menu, or view any programs being opened, as when i try to open them, they presumeably open on the phantom primary monitor. even when i try to open display settings, i cannot see the box. i am able to move my mouse to the left border of the screen and move it off into oblivion, and occasionally drag random folders and short cuts over to view.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Right now I am running a vista machine with 2 monitors one widescreen and my old one. I keep all my sidebar gadgets to the other monitor so I can monitor temps and system diagnostics. Today, my sidebar is on my main monitor and no mater what I do it won't go back to monitor-2, no mater what the setting is in the sidebar properties. What is going on here?

I am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

When I start my laptop up, just normally, I log in. I have that thing where I have to log in using a username and password, something that I downloaded and put into my registry. Anyway, all the time, when I log in, it takes forever to load up, it just stays as welcome and doesnt load. I left it for half an hour and it still hadnt loaded! So, I turned it off and on again, and it worked. But, a couple of times, I had to turn it off and on about 5 times ,and when it didnt load, I had to start it again in safe mode. THEN it worked. But, I hate safe mode!

I am using Vista Home Premium 64bit and Trend Micro anti virus+ anti spyware. I was playing 2moons for about three weeks before this happened. Changes that have occured include me being made an admisinstrator and UAC being turned off. I started playing 2moons and after a minute it froze up. Trend Micro alerted me that a program was trying to make unauthorized changes and it didn't help when I allowed or didn't allow said change. It now happens everytime I run 2moons but only that program. I tracked it to my LocalTemp folder and its name fluxuates. Its called yvnta.sys and will move around the first three-four letters each time it tries to change something. I scanned it with TM but it found nothing. its about 10 kb. Is this a legit sys file, if not should i delete it? Let me know if you need more info. I moved it to the recycle bin and ran the program agian, now there is another file named yvatn.sys. they are now both in the recycle bin. Could it be coming from 2moons?

Every time I boot up I get an alert telling me that Defender has is not turned on. I turn it on an everything is hunky dory until the next time I boot up and we have to go through the same process again. This is only a recent thing and as far as I can tell the system is clear of viruses and spyware. Can anyone offer me any insight? (It may or may not be relevant but anti-virus software (Kaspersky 7.0) is suddenly not visible to the Security Centre either. It runs ok but is Vista thinks I'm running without anti-virus software...)

Now it asks me for permission to open the program but still won't open the program. Anyone know how to get the UAC to work properly again?

How can I gain FullControl of my machine? I have turned off UAC. There is only 1 account. That's me, and I'm the Administrator. I right-click on Documents and Settings in Explorer (or whatever it's called now) and I get "Access Denied?". I am NOT interested in Microsoft's idea of security. I want absolute control of every file on my machine. If I can't have control, the machine is useless to me.

I downloaded and used it. The firewall for Vista was turned off because of it, but it also warned that there is no firewall, even though I have Privatefirewall installed. It should state PrivateFirewall is installed or there is another firewall installed rather than stating there is no firewall or it is not turned on. Should it be ignored or fixed?

Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? .

Running Vista Home Prem;32bit Recently I noticed my HDD loosing about 3 to 4GB of space per day.....this all seemed to start right about the time I installed Vista SP2. I felt the lost was due to System restore rstore points, and, I was right. I turned off Restore which deleted all restore points and available space on my HDD increased back to where it should have been. Under XP you could adjust the size of the HDD reserved for Restore points, I don't believe you can under Vista. My total Restore Point space was taking up around 30GB of my HDD. Does anyone know how much HDD Vista reserves for Restore Points? It just seems to me 30GB is a lot of space to be taken up by Restore and I don't know how much more space would have been taken up by Restore by Sysyem ahd I not deleted all points. I of course have turned it back on and created a Restore Point (and immediately saw I lost 3 GB).....(I was losing about 3 to 4GB per day..and it was ongoing). Losing this much space per restore point....is this acceptable?

I have a strange problem trying to account for the space usage on my disk. The disk capacity is 186 GB, and there is about 12.5 GB of available space. However, when I look at file sizes using ShowSize, TreeSize, or just manually looking at folder sizes in the explorer, I can only account for 99 GB of space. I have backup/restore turned off. Where's the rest of the disk space?
