Turn On Auditing To Monitor Account Attacks

Mar 7, 2007

There is no doubt that all of the security features in Windows Vista will help keep your computer secure.  However, these features become less valuable when they are not turned on by default.  One feature, known as user account auditing, is not turned on by default. With this feature is turned off, anyone with physical access or remote access to through a hole in your firewall (such an opening for Remote Desktop) can use a brute force attack against your user account for as long as they want without getting noticed at all.   How? The default audit security policy is configured to not log any account logon events, successful or failed.

This allows an attacker to try to hack your accounts for as long as it takes to break in.  There are a few ways to protect against this that I am going to go over in my next article about the Account Lockout policy.  But first, it is important to turn on this account auditing so that you can see who may be trying to break into your accounts.  After you have adjusted the auditing security policy, you will be able to see any account attacks including the account that they tried to logon with and where the request came from.
Let's get started and turn on audition for failed logon events:

Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the box and hit Enter.

Navigate through Local Policies and Audit Policy.

Right click on Audit account logon events policy and select Properties.

Check the Failure box and hit OK.

Right click on Audit logon events policy and select Properties.

Check the Failure box and hit OK. Your screen should now look like the figure below:
Close Local Security Policy editor.

Your computer has now been configured to log all failed user account logon attempts....

Won't Turn Off Monitor

May 9, 2008

My hard drive w/ Win XP decided to just up and die. It won't even turn off or send a signal to a monitor. I went out and bought a new computer w/ Vista. My problem is, how do I recover what was on the old hard drive if I can't see anything on a monitor? Will I have to pay a recovery service or is it gone forever?

Monitor Display Doesn't Turn Off

Feb 9, 2008

the display doesn't turn off after the configured time set in the active power plan. The screensaver works fine, so it's not that (for example) a mouse is giving random input. Also, when I shut down the computer, the display jumps to powersaving, so the display works fine. I've already tried a lot of things to solve it........

Where Do Frank And Yanaire Fit On The Scale: Turkeys Die Of Heart Attacks If They Get Scared By Too Many Other Turkeys Gobbling At Once?

Jun 25, 2008

A turkey, which many consider the dumest of all animals can literally drown if it is left out in the middle of a thunderstorm because it often will look up at the sky with it's mouth open and can end up trying to swallow so much rain in time it falls over dead. It has also been reported that turkeys die of heart attacks if they get scared by too many other turkeys gobbling at once. Some turkeys are so stupid they forgot how to eat and need to be hand fed. Turkeys because they are breed to have extra large breasts can no longer mate naturally. Still many try to hump large rocks fall off, ending up gasping for air and again die of a heart attacks. A possum will sit still and let another possum chew off it's tail or ears and make no effort to get away. Dogs routinely eat their own vomit. Turtles in an emergency can breath through their butts. A cow can be led up a flight of stairs, but will refuse to go down the same stairs no matter what. What does this have to do with Frank and Yanaire? All the listed animals are way smarter than these two buffoons.

New Email Account: New AOL E-mail Account, Clicked 'Add E-mail Account' At The Bottom Of My 'Windows Live Account'

Aug 24, 2009

I have a Windows Live Mail account and a Yahoo account and they both show up on the left hand side of my Window Live Mail account so I can choose which account I want to use or, for example, which inbox to look in. At the bottom, also on the left hand side of my Windows Live Mail account, it shows 'Add e-mail account', which is what I want to do with a new 'AOL' account and I want it to show on the left hand side like the two other accounts.

So I made a new AOL e-mail account, clicked 'Add e-mail account' at the bottom of my 'Windows Live Account', then I put in my new AOL e-mail account and password where it showed me. Then I clicked next.

The next page was all about my email server. When I did this before with a new e-mail account, it was all filled out automatically for me, but this time, all the blanks were left open and I have no idea what to fill in. I believe once I have this information, the AOL e-mail account will automatically then show on the left hand pane of my Windows Live Mail account below the other two accounts.

Added A Second Monitor To The GeForce 7100 GS Using A DVI-VGA Adapter And For The Life Of Me Cannot Get It To Display Anything, The Monitor Is Just In Sleep Mode

Apr 23, 2010

I added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........

Ultimate X64: Turn Off Display, Will Not Turn Back On

Nov 2, 2007

Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Turn Off Went To Start Turn Off Computer

Aug 27, 2009

I am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

Gmail Account Not Retrun Account

May 15, 2010

my Gmail account has been comprimised yesterday They have changed the secondary email so I cannot just reset the password I have tried to fill out the form to regain control over your account but they declined to give me my account. I have filled it out as best as I can, but I cannot remember the dates that I set up (I have deleted the email that I got when I set up the account). I never use personal information with that email account, and I didn't really mind about it, but I have got accounts registered with other sites (VF, SF, EF etc.) on it. I have changed the emails and passwords on these sites, but I don't know if I have missed any websites. Is there any way that I can contact google (preferably by email) to sort out this?

I know people will try to say this to gain control over somebodies gmail account, but you can check my rep and posts, I am a truthful person. This is the email that Google sent me: Originally Posted by Google Thank you for your report. We've completed our investigation and cannot return your account at this time. How Turn UAC Off?

Aug 10, 2009

I have an old-school program that creates its directory at a hard-corded directory in C's root (C:xxx). Now, I don't want to run it with administrative privileges, I changed the directory's security permissions to (everyone - full control) and make them inherited to all its sub-directories. The program reads & writes fine with existing files. But the program creates a c file inside its directory and tries to let a C compiler on a network drive compile it. That 92s when the problem comes in. It creates the c file all right, but the c compiler cannot read it (saying =93permission denied=94). If I turn UAC off, I don 92t get errors, but I don 92t want to turn it off.

- Good brand, a brand you can trust.
- Widescreen
- 19' or up
- NO reflecting screen
- DVI
- Compatible with Vista

What do you guys recommend?
