View 5 RepliesI have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? To reach the power button on the laptop you must first raise the lid which there is not room to do
View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Basic running an E Machine 32 bit. I recently took a full factory restart. I then deleted McAfee because I wanted to run Norton. I have since deleted Norton and am now using Avast. When I went to Windows Security Center - Malware protection and clicked on "show me the antivirus programs" it showed both McAfee and Avast were both running. I can not get rid of McAfee. Since I deleted it by using the uninstall or change panel McAfee is not listed but it is still running. How do I get rid of McAfee?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new puter with Vista Home Prem 64bit. Mcafee suite was installed with 2 years of free service. I used the virtual technician to indicate if everything was working properly. To my surprise there is one error "Process not working". It indicated that C:programfiles (X86)mcafee|virusscan|Mcshield.exe was not working. Is this inidcation just a misdiagnosis from the Virtual Technician because it is set for 32bit? If this indication is correct, do I have real time virus scan protection? Customer support was of no help. I have reinstalled and the same error shows.

Windows Mail worked correctly for 1 year. I did not have the "password won't
save" problem at all.
McAfee Security Center was uninstalled and debris removal was performed
because I dislike McAfee (which came installed on the the computer.)
Avast Pro was installed because I like it.
Now, I have the Windows Mail "password won't save" problem. When I look at
the Account Properties, there's nothing in the password box. When I enter
the password and click Remember Password, check email, I get the popup
requesting username password. If I enter the info there, mail is received
and can be sent. Next time, it asks for username/pw again.
I have deleted the account, closed Windows Mail, recreated the account -
same problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of an hour ago I could not open AIM, McAfee, or HP Total Care Advisor. When ever I try to open one of these three programs I get and error message. Here's an example when opening McAfee;mcshell.exe - Bad Imagec:Windoessystem32SHFolder.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains and error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or software vendor for support. Then if you hit OK it comes up again and again four times with that same title then the title changes to "E398ADA39B044C5808A09B3D49548DB: mcshell.exe" The only way to get this error message to vanish is open task manager and end that program. What's going on with my computer? Also a program called On-Acess Scanner service has stopped working. I don't know that program.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently using Vista Home Premium. I had a problem with one of the current updates and had to use system restore. After the restore everything worked fine except that Mc Afee Security would no longer function, with the exception of the Firewall. Mc Afee indicated that the secuerity center was more than 30 days out of date. My system restore was set for less than 24 hours. Is this a normal situation and is there any way to prevent it in the future?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe other day my compter was working just fine, until the battery died and it shut off. Ever since then, when I start it up McAfee doesn't open at start up, or at all for that matter. And, everytime I double click on the shortcut, the picture comes up, but it just stays that way, and then the desktop freezes. And, when I try to open something that needs permission to continue, like when I right click and select "Run as administrator, nothing happens. Also, when I try to uninstall something, nothing happens. The internet icon on the taskbar is always frozen, indicating that there's no connection, when there actually is.
Most programs do the same as McAfee, althought Internet Explorer 8 works, but not well. It stops working alot and hulu videos don't work for instance. Also, anytime I try to download something on IE8, it quickly jumps to 99% and stops there. And, whenever I try system restore in help, the window stops responding. My mom thinks that it might be a virus from a song that she downloaded on LimeWire 5.1.1 PRO. But again, McAfee won't work. And my registry cleaning software won't open, because it has to ask permission. Which doesn't work. Windows Update doesn't even respond when I open it. What should I do?
I was doing a scan with Spybot Search & Destroy, while it was running there was a Hint of the Day appeared inside the Spybot window. ( See screenshot ). So, if I had one of those 3, I should ditch Spybot? P.S. I do NOT have anyone of those security programs. My question is merely curiosity. Any comment/insight?...........

View 4 Replies View RelatedI updated to SP1 on my Dell Dimension 9100 from Home Premium. After the SP1 upgrade, when I try to open McAfee (it is running in the Event Viewer) - I get the opening sequence and then a blank window. I open CNN.Com and get an "Error on Page" message, and the advertising box does not run (no biggie). BUT if I click on "Error on Page", then I get about 30 windows opening for a "debug check" but no details of what causes the error. The only way to get past all of the windows is to do a Task Manager and force IE7 closed. If I open IE7 with "NO ADD-ONS", the problem still exists. I open Windows communities, and the threads don't show...only a blank box. If I go back to Windows (NON-SP1), these problems disappear. If I use Opera as my browser, I can see and experience all of these browser pages. I have McAfee and SpySweeper active in the event viewer and there is no indication of malware, spyware or a virus (unless MS released the SP1
download with malware -- UNLIKELY).

Now, I don't want to run it with administrative privileges, I changed the directory's security permissions to (everyone - full control) and make them inherited to all its sub-directories. The program reads & writes fine with existing files. But the program creates a c file inside its directory and tries to let a C compiler on a network drive compile it.
