the display doesn't turn off after the configured time set in the active power plan. The screensaver works fine, so it's not that (for example) a mouse is giving random input. Also, when I shut down the computer, the display jumps to powersaving, so the display works fine. I've already tried a lot of things to solve it........
View 7 RepliesI added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........

The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

My problem is, how do I recover what was on the old hard drive if I can't see anything on a monitor? Will I have to pay a recovery service or is it gone forever?

However, these features become less valuable when they are not turned on by default. One feature, known as user account auditing, is not turned on by default. With this feature is turned off, anyone with physical access or remote access to through a hole in your firewall (such an opening for Remote Desktop) can use a brute force attack against your user account for as long as they want without getting noticed at all. How? The default audit security policy is configured to not log any account logon events, successful or failed.
This allows an attacker to try to hack your accounts for as long as it takes to break in. There are a few ways to protect against this that I am going to go over in my next article about the Account Lockout policy. But first, it is important to turn on this account auditing so that you can see who may be trying to break into your accounts. After you have adjusted the auditing security policy, you will be able to see any account attacks including the account that they tried to logon with and where the request came from.
Let's get started and turn on audition for failed logon events:
Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the box and hit Enter.
Navigate through Local Policies and Audit Policy.
Right click on Audit account logon events policy and select Properties.
Check the Failure box and hit OK.
Right click on Audit logon events policy and select Properties.
Check the Failure box and hit OK. Your screen should now look like the figure below:
Close Local Security Policy editor.
Your computer has now been configured to log all failed user account logon attempts....
I have Vista where an indicator pops up whenever you turn Caps Lock on and off. Earlier today, whenever I turned Caps Lock on or off, I couldn't type for a few seconds, which was annoying. When I tried it again later, there was no delay. The page below says how to turn off this annoying feature, but I don't have a folder called WidcommBT. Do you know what I could look for? Have you found that this popup delays your keyboard?

Most times when I turn it off and on again it will recognize it then work fine, but as of lately it can take 10+ times. When it does this and you turn it off, it does flash the Analog and Digital box in the top left corner, meaning its recognizing it but it still wont work when computer is turned on again. Im thinking the problem is something to do with the Digital/Analog setting on my monitor, or something in the settings?

I set my 2nd monitor (i.e. not the laptop screen) as my main monitor, however, after every restart Vista always reverts back to the Laptop as the main monitor. How can I stop Vista reverting backto the Laptop as the main monitor? (This happens aven though at no stage have I un-docked the laptop!)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using the onboard intel graphics with the VGA out to my VGA display. This problem has only started happening within the last 20-ish days or so. The display will periodicly flash black for a secound & then back on again? it's almost like changing your screen resolution but with no apparent resizing taking place, although it does seem to happen mostly when I expand windows more than any other time. Everything still carrys on as normal on the computer when this display blackout happens.
I have tested my ram with memtest to rule out ram problems as it's new. I'm not getting any errors to suggest theres some ram issues or any related symptoms for ram associated problems. anyway & it's now past 3 memtest sessions with no errors. I have also carried out orhtos & prime95 test just to stress the Ram & CPU to see if I got any errors reported with nothing reported. Only once did a blackout happen during testing when I was maximizing a window but the test reported nothing?
I've tried turning off password protection in Network and Sharing Centre, but no matter how many times I select "Turn off sharing" and then click APPLY, it just doesn't turn off!!! The on button remains!

Ive done a bit of research and this is the monitor for me. problem is i know lcd's display best at their native resolution and for most things ill be running at at 1680x1050 , however with my current rig (and my upgrade being pushed back due to needing a new monitor) ill struggle to game at this res. so will it look/perform ok at 1280x1024 ingame? until i upgrade?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently had to reinstall Vista after a HD failure. Almost everything is working as expected. I do have tasks that I want to have run for long periods of time (usually overnight). I have set my power options to "never turn off display" and "never sleep". Screensaver is set to "none"
This works for shorter periods of time, but when I leave the PC overnight, I come back and my monitor indicates that it is getting no signal. The PC power lights are still on, but nothing I do turns the monitor feed back on (keyboard and mouse input have no visible effect). This is not a monitor sleep issue, I have confirmed that it is not recieving signal from the PC.
I've tested this even when my tasks are not running, so I know it isn't related to that. Also, I didn't have this problem before the reinstall. I'm concerned because the only solution is to cold boot, and that would be bad if the PC happens to be in the middle of a task, or a windows update or something. Other than the power settings and screen saver, what else should I be checking in Vista that might create (or prevent) this type of behavior?
I bought a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop with preloaded Vista Home. I've found it to be terribly unstable (receive Microsoft Visual C++ errors and continously restarts the internet while surfing etc.) I want to reformat my hardrive and reload Windows XP PRo (genuine software with license) from my previous laptop (which is no longer in use).
I insert the cd and boot from it - it does it's Setup checks and loads the necessary files - I chose to load a fresh version of Windows, press "F8" to agree and then when it comes to chosing the partition, it tells me "No Drive found" - it doesn't display any harddrive at all. When pressing "ESC" to cancel, the dreaded "blue screen" comes up and says there has been a "fatal error". Any ideas why this is happening and why I cannot reformat the harddrive with Windows XP Pro?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi have only one monitor, and somehow it is being treat as though its the secondary monitor in a dual monitor set up. i cannot view my start menu, or view any programs being opened, as when i try to open them, they presumeably open on the phantom primary monitor. even when i try to open display settings, i cannot see the box. i am able to move my mouse to the left border of the screen and move it off into oblivion, and occasionally drag random folders and short cuts over to view.

1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
Is there any way to turn off UAC, but without having the nagging notification on the taskbar afterwards?

Now, I don't want to run it with administrative privileges, I changed the directory's security permissions to (everyone - full control) and make them inherited to all its sub-directories. The program reads & writes fine with existing files. But the program creates a c file inside its directory and tries to let a C compiler on a network drive compile it. That 92s when the problem comes in. It creates the c file all right, but the c compiler cannot read it (saying =93permission denied=94). If I turn UAC off, I don 92t get errors, but I don 92t want to turn it off.

Windows 3d flip simply keeps switching from the application window to the 3D stack. Any click causes the applications to stack. Click again and the application reopens. Click anywhere in the sindow and I am back at the stack. How do I turn this off?
