Just to get better explaination about this.Whenever i set the Power Options->Turn Off The Display->Any Value->then when monitor went to off(standby) = Windows Crashed/Blue Screen. But, when i set to never, no problem. Already tried all the values, result = same.
View 9 RepliesI have an HP laptop using Vista SP-2. Until recently, the power settings worked the way I set them (especially shutting off the display after 15 minutes of idle time). Now, this particular setting doesn't work (the display stays on all the time). I haven't checked the other settings yet. Tried Google but couldn't find anything that applied.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had graphics card problems and had to get my 8800GTS replaced. This took several weeks and now I'm running a 8800GT perfectly fine. However, I've noticed my Power Options seem to be corrupt. Upon going into Power Options in the Control Panel, it says "Your power plan information isn't available." I cannot understand why this has happened. I haven't touched any settings or anything to do with that. I have tried System Restore to an earlier point (before I got my new graphics card) and it didn't seem to help. The help on the page says that registry keys may have become corrupt or been deleted. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but if it is how can I fix it? System Restore didn't help.
I would like to avoid doing a Repair with the Windows disc. I'm hoping there's an easier way to fix this problem. There has to be! I've been looking on Google and there is hardly anything on this problem. The very few people who do have it cannot seem to fix it, or used previous registry backups (which hasn't worked for me). There doesn't seem to be any resolutions from Microsoft at all. I also tried using the "powercfg" commands in the command prompt, but didn't seem to have any luck there either. I cannot Hibernate or Sleep at the moment and it's a real inconvenience. I'd really like my Power Options back!
I use a Vista Business OS installed but am unable to see thumbnail preview in my taskbar. When I check the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties it shows as greyed but deselected and I have not found a way to enable this option. Similarly under Notification Area Tab the Power option inder System Icons also is greyed and deselected. Can anyone tell me how to select this 'Show Window previews (thumbnails)' and 'Power' options.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.
Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.
Power Scheme-Sleep Mode I use Vista on my Dell PC and have my power settings set to turn off my monitor in 15 minutes and my PC in 20 minutes (sleep mode). When my PC enters the Sleep mode, it only stays in that mode a short time, usually three or so minutes at the maximum, then it activates and my monitor turns on. Is this normal for this power option? I would expect my PC to stay in the Sleep
mode for a longer period of time, at least some of the time.
I have Vista where an indicator pops up whenever you turn Caps Lock on and off. Earlier today, whenever I turned Caps Lock on or off, I couldn't type for a few seconds, which was annoying. When I tried it again later, there was no delay. The page below says how to turn off this annoying feature, but I don't have a folder called WidcommBT. Do you know what I could look for? Have you found that this popup delays your keyboard?

The screensaver works fine, so it's not that (for example) a mouse is giving random input. Also, when I shut down the computer, the display jumps to powersaving, so the display works fine. I can switch from different plans that change how quickly my display turns off, but my screen has been stuck at the lowest brightness possible for a while now. It has nothing to do with the plans themselves, I've restored all to their default settings and still no change in brightness when I switch between all of them. The little slider to adjust

i installed vista 64 ultimate with 3 gig of ram but i was told that vista 64 could run with 4 so when i installed the 4th gig or ram my pc would turn on but not boot (did not see any display) so a friend told me that it is a known issue and to fix it i needed to reinstall service pack 1 with just 2 gig then that would allow me to install the full 4....i did this and now my comp will not boot unless i have just 2 gig, it wont even boot with 3 gig like before,

I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently had to reinstall Vista after a HD failure. Almost everything is working as expected. I do have tasks that I want to have run for long periods of time (usually overnight). I have set my power options to "never turn off display" and "never sleep". Screensaver is set to "none"
This works for shorter periods of time, but when I leave the PC overnight, I come back and my monitor indicates that it is getting no signal. The PC power lights are still on, but nothing I do turns the monitor feed back on (keyboard and mouse input have no visible effect). This is not a monitor sleep issue, I have confirmed that it is not recieving signal from the PC.
I've tested this even when my tasks are not running, so I know it isn't related to that. Also, I didn't have this problem before the reinstall. I'm concerned because the only solution is to cold boot, and that would be bad if the PC happens to be in the middle of a task, or a windows update or something. Other than the power settings and screen saver, what else should I be checking in Vista that might create (or prevent) this type of behavior?
My Toshiba Labtop has crashed.I think a shared file was deleted. Labtop was operating under Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.It happened right after uninstalling Java; because the dang updates kept popping up and it was getting annoying. Now whenever i start it, it comes to a black screen and a minute later a cursor pops up. Safe mode does not work.I have tried the recovery disk, but to no avail.I know im doing right because i purchased some Boots Disks off ebay and they come right up (PC wizard; Pc doctor).So i bought Windows Vista Ultimate and tried to install and i cant get to install thru boot.I ither need to know how to install windows thru boot, but id much rather just fix current windows.

I have an 18 month old Toshiba Equiium running vista home P 32 bit. If I start normally, the microsoft logo comes up and then the screen blips blue momentarily then it goes off. If I run the repair, it scans for faults, then prompts to run a system restore. I take this option and then it takes many minutes to attempt repairs - ultimately ending with 'windows cannot repair..."
there is a log with lots of 0x0 type errors notices (which are meaningles to me) I can't even get to the point where I could elect to restore to last best save or whatever. I have all my docs backed up on a portable HD but I cannot get past this failed repair message.
is there any way to show the power plan in tray like in winxp so i can change between plans (balanced, power saver...)

It hard crashed after a few weeks of operation, and a mini hard stroke this week, forget the old blu screen of death, this one has it's one, just discised a little. I've heard one can convert back to XP, but having skipped that one, I don't know how it is. Please put on thinking caps for me as I'm stumped and every thing puiter related is getting more difficult as time goes on.

I have gone to the Send tab to uncheck a couple of things I do not want operating. I notice that the window is quite large and I cannot see APPLY and OKAY. Consequently, I cannot have any of the options that I chose unchecked. Once I move out of the Options window, everything goes back the way it was. I thought I could minimize the size of the Options window, but no go on that. how I can get to Apply and Okay on this window?

That was extremely helpful when copying and/or backing up files in one folder. However, in VISTA it seems as if I can only Group Files by Date. Am I missing something? Or can I actually sort files by DATE in ascending or descending order? Also, once I set up Windows Explorer the way I like it [Details View], how do I make that the default for all windows?

My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a computer where I can't access the Explorer Folder Options (specifically the Folder and Search options under the Organize submenu.)
When I select it, I get an error message labeled 'Restricted.' The text reads "This option has been cancelled due to restrictions See your administrator."
However, I should point out that I DO still have admin priveleges. I can access any other menu or option. I can edit the registry, change the internet explorer options, use the group policy editor, whatever.
Most of the potential solutions I found relate to either a program changing the restrictions for Explorer folder options; but the associated registry entries where those restrictions would normally be 'keyed' are not present.
Editing the group policy (which by default is 'not configured') to 'disable' the 'Remove Folder Options' policy has no effect whatsoever. Editing the registry, adding keys, and then disabling them, also has no effect.
Using NOD32 and scanning in safe mode results in no infection found, and I'm not seeing the telltale signs of an infection (such as limiting my admin priveleges in other areas, like registry editing or using the control panel applets.)
Hijack this does not provide any clues; it all looks clean (with the exception of some leftover services from TuneUp Utilities, which I ended up cleaning out manually.) Cleaning this did not change the problem at hand.
Using a restore point from several days ago did not fix the problem. I could go further back but I don't even know when this problem began. Maybe as long as a month ago.
recently I've just been noticing a lot of text being cutt off at the end, or even cutt of vertically when it goes to a second line. I've posted about this on a couple other forums but had no success fixing it and my google searches aint produced much either. I thought this was just winamp messing up at first but then i noticed it in itunes as well and now i keep seeing it everywhere, in some webpages and a few other apps. Heres a few examples. A while back i had some problems with a load of fonts being deleted somehow so that vista started using some other ones instead. in the end i fixed this by copying all the missing fonts from my vista laptop over to my desktop. Dunno if this is what has caused my current prob but might have something to do with it.

I had my bios set to load up to the state it was in before the power failed and came home to find I had a power outage and the screen showed one of the windows start up loading green dash scroll bars stuck in the middle. Safe mode no good. Boot to Vista disc and repairs cannot be made. Pulled ram sticks to check for bad ones and no go.
