I have an HP laptop using Vista SP-2. Until recently, the power settings worked the way I set them (especially shutting off the display after 15 minutes of idle time). Now, this particular setting doesn't work (the display stays on all the time). I haven't checked the other settings yet. Tried Google but couldn't find anything that applied.
View 9 RepliesI've Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba P200 Laptop and here's the tummy-turning experience I'm having. I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

View 9 Replies View Relatedexplorer.exe is using 50% CPU when the computer is idle. This started after being in hibernation for about 6 hours. I can log in, but have no use of the task bar. I can click on a program icon on my desktop and the program opens with no problem. When I mouse over the taskbar, either nothing happens or my cursor changes into an hourglass. I cannot use the Windows key on my keyboard either. If I use Task Manager to stop explorer.exe and then restart explorer.exe - the taskbar works normally for a while, but explorer.exe is still using at least 50% CPU time when the computer is idle............
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen my Vista Home Premium-SP1, is idle for awhile, the computer freezes. the screen is a grayish color and the mouse circle just keeps twirling. I have to manually re-boot. Everything is fine until I leave and come back...and it is frozen again. I cannot ctrl-alt-delete either. When I went to do a system restore, I saw that all my restore points were gone. How could this have happened? I thought maybe a windows update could be the source so I uninstalled the many updates (approx. 25). the next morning, I saw they had all returned even though I have it set not to download automatically.
View 7 Replies View RelatedPROBLEM: I have an XP laptop that I'm using as a file/print server, with two Maxtor external USB drives, and an HP color laser printer. I have a home network to which I've connected several computers (a wireless XP laptop and two Vista desktops, one Ethernet and one wireless). When I first booted up all the computers in the morning, my Ethernet-connected Vista desktop could access the HP printer and the Maxtor external drives. Thereafter, at some time later, I couldn't get to the XP laptop, nor the printer, nor the Maxtor drives. When I would click on the mapped network drive, I would get the "The specified network name is no longer available". If I rebooted, all was well -- for a time. I could never figure out a sequence of events that was causing the problem.
UNTIL... I came across this thread and your tutorial Network Idle Session Time to Automatically Disconnect ... OMG!!! THE SOLUTION. Life has been SO good since I set the autodisconnect to 'never'. Disconnect. Geez. I had no idea there was such a thing as Network Idle Session Time.
I have set up a power plan in Vista Home Premuim 64Bit on my laptop. Is there anyway to have the laptop change to that plan when its plugged into the mains and stay on another one when its on battery? Or do I have to keep changing it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had graphics card problems and had to get my 8800GTS replaced. This took several weeks and now I'm running a 8800GT perfectly fine. However, I've noticed my Power Options seem to be corrupt. Upon going into Power Options in the Control Panel, it says "Your power plan information isn't available." I cannot understand why this has happened. I haven't touched any settings or anything to do with that. I have tried System Restore to an earlier point (before I got my new graphics card) and it didn't seem to help. The help on the page says that registry keys may have become corrupt or been deleted. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but if it is how can I fix it? System Restore didn't help.
I would like to avoid doing a Repair with the Windows disc. I'm hoping there's an easier way to fix this problem. There has to be! I've been looking on Google and there is hardly anything on this problem. The very few people who do have it cannot seem to fix it, or used previous registry backups (which hasn't worked for me). There doesn't seem to be any resolutions from Microsoft at all. I also tried using the "powercfg" commands in the command prompt, but didn't seem to have any luck there either. I cannot Hibernate or Sleep at the moment and it's a real inconvenience. I'd really like my Power Options back!
I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:
1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.
2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.
3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.
I use a Vista Business OS installed but am unable to see thumbnail preview in my taskbar. When I check the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties it shows as greyed but deselected and I have not found a way to enable this option. Similarly under Notification Area Tab the Power option inder System Icons also is greyed and deselected. Can anyone tell me how to select this 'Show Window previews (thumbnails)' and 'Power' options.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm on a Toshiba Satellite that's worked fairly well except for a few self-repaired hiccups. However, about a week ago my power management plans suddenly stopped working. I can switch from different plans that change how quickly my display turns off, but my screen has been stuck at the lowest brightness possible for a while now. It has nothing to do with the plans themselves, I've restored all to their default settings and still no change in brightness when I switch between all of them. The little slider to adjust
brightness simply does not appear anymore. I can't find what exactly it is that's malfunctioning to reinstall, as no power management driver appeared on my disk from Toshiba. Can anyone provide an explanation or perhaps a link to repair this?
Is there a way to show the time and date in one line in the system tray/taskbar instead of using the way when you unlock the taskbar and make it larger?

After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
how to set up the folder options to display the number of subfolders or items when its selected. It used to display in the bottom of the folder window but got disabled. Any folder clicked on would display in a small footer the number of items stored in in and size.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAt idle, I have 50% cpu usage at times. It seems to be msiexec.exe. I have absolutely no idea why. Is this a normal Vista behaviour? Second, at startup I have 67 processes running, then it jumps to 72, then back down to 67. I had this amount on my XP pro machine, but had probably over 60 different programs installed, as it was a shared machine with CAD programs, graphic design software, etc. Now I only have vista, adobe cs3, blackberry, and office... And for my final question, Why does eSata not able to "hot-swap"? Is this normal as well (sorry, I've always used firewire for my external drives, but now I'm trying to use eSata)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Vista recently and now, when I've got all updates and I've installed few programs into Windows like Visual Studio, Mobile Device Center, some SDKs etc, every time the system is idle the CPU load is 50%, not exactly, but about 50%.
So I've tried to determine which process makes this CPU load. After Alt Ctrl Delete and Task Manager I haven't got to know anything. I've installed Process Explorer from Sysinternals. He told me process "System" makes this high load. I've tried to "kill" process "System". Yes, load felt down. But this isn't solution because after reboot it's the same.

Task manager Performance shows about 50% CPU usaage but Processes says 98% idle. If I start in safe mode Task Manager is the same but I seem to get a little better response. I use a free version of AVG.This problem seems to show up a lot in Google but each one seems to get resolved a different way. I tried some things others did but it has had no affect. The last time I started there were about 10 SVCHOST
processes. I ended a few but nothing changed.It takes a long time for one to end because the response is so slow.And it gets slower the longer I am up.
Where do I start to get to the bottom of ths?

My Acer laptop runs at 125 degrees F Idle, and it runs at about 160 F - 180 F when I play a game or do intense work. I was wondering how I can decrease the heat and keep my laptop cool. I've tried Speed Fan with no luck, and I haven't found any Acer Software to help me out. The computer it hot to the touch, and the temperature monitor is Speed Fan. I've even tried blowing out the dust in the case, and it doesn't fix it. I once opened up the bottom of my laptop, and saw lots of dust and blew it out. Most came out but some was left behind.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFrom time to time my system (Vista64) shuts down - when IDLE - for no reason. WIndows restarts and says: Windows recovered for an unexpected shutdown... error report send. How to debug? Note that the system is idle; only background processes are running.
What I've done sofar:
- Ran extended memory test: no problem
- Disabled power saving settings (as I suspected a problem going into hibernate/sleep). No effect.
- Disabled all "user based processes" as Picasa, Google indexing, CPU-temp watcher etc..
- Removed all USB sticks (no readyboost anymore)
I leave the system idle and 10minutes to 2hours later; bang; shutdown Note also that the system never chrashed when I'm actually working. So, not a severe issue but I feel intellectually challenged to get the thing under control.
