Set The Power Options For The Computer To "go To Sleep" In 20 Minutes

Dec 5, 2009

I've Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba P200 Laptop and here's the tummy-turning experience I'm having. I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

Power Options (especially Shutting Off The Display After 15 Minutes Of Idle Time)

Mar 4, 2010

I have an HP laptop using Vista SP-2. Until recently, the power settings worked the way I set them (especially shutting off the display after 15 minutes of idle time). Now, this particular setting doesn't work (the display stays on all the time). I haven't checked the other settings yet. Tried Google but couldn't find anything that applied.

Turn Off The Power, Computer Goes To Sleep

May 4, 2008

The 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.

Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.

Power Options Corrupt

Sep 15, 2008

I recently had graphics card problems and had to get my 8800GTS replaced. This took several weeks and now I'm running a 8800GT perfectly fine. However, I've noticed my Power Options seem to be corrupt. Upon going into Power Options in the Control Panel, it says "Your power plan information isn't available." I cannot understand why this has happened. I haven't touched any settings or anything to do with that. I have tried System Restore to an earlier point (before I got my new graphics card) and it didn't seem to help. The help on the page says that registry keys may have become corrupt or been deleted. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but if it is how can I fix it? System Restore didn't help.

I would like to avoid doing a Repair with the Windows disc. I'm hoping there's an easier way to fix this problem. There has to be! I've been looking on Google and there is hardly anything on this problem. The very few people who do have it cannot seem to fix it, or used previous registry backups (which hasn't worked for me). There doesn't seem to be any resolutions from Microsoft at all. I also tried using the "powercfg" commands in the command prompt, but didn't seem to have any luck there either. I cannot Hibernate or Sleep at the moment and it's a real inconvenience. I'd really like my Power Options back!

Power Scheme-Sleep Mode Turn Off

Jul 1, 2008

Power Scheme-Sleep Mode I use Vista on my Dell PC and have my power settings set to turn off my monitor in 15 minutes and my PC in 20 minutes (sleep mode). When my PC enters the Sleep mode, it only stays in that mode a short time, usually three or so minutes at the maximum, then it activates and my monitor turns on. Is this normal for this power option? I would expect my PC to stay in the Sleep
mode for a longer period of time, at least some of the time.

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Unidentified Program Wants To Access Your Computer Options

Mar 23, 2008

Mostly, when I install programs in Vista, there's no problem starting them. In a couple of cases, though, whenever I run the program (whether from the Start menu or by double-clicking a data file), Vista posts a message: "An unidentified program wants to access your computer." It gives the options "Cancel" and "Allow". Well, obviously I want to allow the program; I've just started it! And the programs were installed through a normal installation process. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling those specific programs, but I get
the same results. How can I tell Vista to stop asking me and just allow it?

Computer In A Low Power State

Jan 29, 2009

I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.

I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.

The "power-troubleshooter" Source Will Tell You What Woke It Up Out Of Sleep

Mar 17, 2008

Nearly all sleep problems are caused by devices that are set to be able to wake the computer back up again. They can wake your computer instantly, randomly, or can cause your computer not to fully enter sleep mode and even cause it never to wake up. If you have any problems similar to the ones described then the following could be your cure.

Advanced Users: Check the system event log. The "power-troubleshooter" source will tell you what woke it up out of sleep. If it says "Wake Source: Unknown" Its most likely to do with step 3.

1) Disable Vista's multimedia sharing option from restricting sleep:

Type 'power options' in the start menu and press enter->Choose 'Balanced' -> 'Change plan settings' (for the chosen power plan) -> 'Change advanced power settings' -> Scroll down to 'Multimedia settings' -> Choose 'Allow the computer to sleep'

2) Prevent Devices from being able to wake your computer.

Type 'device manager' in the start menu and press enter

-> Expand 'Keyboards' -> Right click 'properties' on your keyboard -> 'Power Management' tab -> Deselect 'Allow this device to wake the computer' -> OK ,..............

Power Outage During Computer Wake-up Stops 32-bit Processes From Running

Apr 16, 2009

Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.

I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.

I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.

I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?

Computer Refuses To Go Into Sleep Mode

Mar 8, 2009

Computer refuses to go into sleep mode. When I force sleep by clicking the power button on the task bar the computer goes to sleep for about 5 - 20 seconds and then wakes up and stays awake. The cause; Installation of a gateway router from AT&T to provide TV and internet service. AT&T tech support claims no known issues with this router, yet the computer slept just fine prior to installation of this router, and if I power down the router the computer sleeps with no problem. This is not a solution since the router must remain powered up to provide TV service to my home. I have searched the internet for a solution, and have performed all the steps in the tutorial authored by Brink to no avail.

Shutting Down Computer Walks Into Something Like Sleep

when I'm trying to shut it down, my computer walks into something like sleep (tho I can't wake it from it) what exactly happens is: my monitor lets "beep" 3 times and goes black (as it usually does when it's turned off), but power LED on monitor stays green (after turning it off should be yellow) on keyboard num lock/caps lock/scroll lock legs keeps blinking power led on PC stays green all fans are working and I hear that HDD has stopped working (at least I think it is)

I've run safe mode and tried to shut it down from there, everything stays exactly same, with one exception monitor doesn't "beep", isn't going black, but stays on "shutting down" screen which is frozen (animation of "work in progress" circle has stopped) rest is as described above..............

Computer Freezes After Coming Out Of Sleep

Mar 23, 2008

My computer (HP m9000t) freezes up after coming out of sleep mode. I have tried turning off sleep / hybrid sleep / hibernate, but the computer still goes into "sleep" of some kind. When it comes out of sleep, I can hear a whirling sound, which could be the harddrive starting up, but moments later it sounds like it spins down and stops, and then the whole computer freezes up, and I have to turn it off and then turn it back on in order to make it work again. I've tried to make it (using power options) so that the harddrive does not power down, but
that doesn't appear to do anything either, because the drive still turns off when the computer sleeps. Before this problem developed, I was having problems with the Media Center remote not working after sleep, and was also having problems with the usb ports, and the sound turning off.....................
