Computer Has Horizontal Lines After 13 Minutes
Feb 20, 2009
I was listening to the 911 call about the chimp attacking the woman in Conn. when all at once my computer screen had these horizontal lines running all across the screen!!I wasn't watching the video ,just listeneing to the audio, after about 12 0r 13 minutes is when this happened,it was in full screen mode with a picture of the chimp on it. It was just a picture, no moving or anything. This has happened before,(just the lines are a new development) it never shut off it,this time, just stopped responding. what could have caused this?? When it happened before, it just shut off

I sometimes get my main monitor blurry (I have 2). It looks like the resolution decreased and it even has these small horizontal lines flashing you can notice when you look real close to it. It resembles ?static?. To fix it, I can go to the nVidia control panel and switch the monitor configuration and then hit ?No? when it asks me if I want to keep the setting But then it will come back again later at random it seems.

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

I've Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba P200 Laptop and here's the tummy-turning experience I'm having. I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

I just got a new PC with a Point Of View GTX280EXO Vga and a Samsung 2232GW 22" widscreen LCD monitor. I have set it at 1680x1050 res but the problem is I'm noticing a big amount of horizontal tearing! I have the latest Nvidia and monitor drivers installed.
I notice this in games and in Windows, for example when I scroll this forum screen downwards quickly, I notice the tearing on the right and left sides of the text area on the dark area of the background. Is this normal? I hooked up my old CRT 17" monitor and set it to the highest 1280x1024 res and this does not happen.

many emails I receive have been reforwarded several times and often contain verticle blue lines, from top to bottom and varying lengths, and seem to correspond with each of the times the email has been forwarded. This is annoying. How do I stop the verticle blue lines?

I have somewhat of an annoying UI problem with Explorer. For some reason, the TreeView in explorer is adding lines illustrated below: Is there any way to get rid of the lines? This began happening when I set my "Folder Options" to view hidden files. I deleted a lot of extra junk that explorer was hiding on my desktop, and that's when this problem started happening.

This may actually be a Linksys problem, but I hope there's a workaround in Vista. Linksys wireless print server; network of computers (mostly Vista 32, some XP, one Vista 64, one Linux) that print through it to an HP LaserJet 1200 printer using HP PCL 5 drivers. All print jobs are OK, but many of them (somewhat unpredictably) are preceded by a junk page containing a couple of lines of PCL commands ("PJL COMMENT" and the like).
It is not clear whether the junk page is the beginning of the job or the tail end of the previous job -- thus I'm not even sure which computers are generating it. I think the former. That is, I think it is a set of PCL comments sent at the beginning of the job. Linksys drivers are not on the PCs. Instead I print through LPR or RAW protocol (both give the same results) on a TCP/IP port as recommended by Linksys.
I have tried the WinPrint print processor and 2 versions of the HP print rocessor. This seems to slightly change what's on the junk pages but not eliminate them. Printing several jobs in succession from the same computer, I usually don't get junk pages in front of them. But the actual conditions are hard to pin down. Trying to run around and try all the combinations is very tedious

My nice 200GB drive in my lappy barfed so I went back to the stocker w/ factory Vista install (about 5 mo old) and am trying to get it updated.
Pretty much been at it all afternoon.
One problem is that it hits the XML4 update and hangs there forever and ever.
Another problem is that shutdowns take forever. I've been sitting here 15 minutes now looking at '****ting down' and I'll probably get fed up with waiting for it and pull the battery.
I've always found Vista shutdowns to be 3-10x longer than XPs are, but this is getting ridiculous.
If it matters, lappy is a 5mo old HP 8510W.

Vista Home Premium Sometimes when I try to shut down the PC - START-SHUTDOWN and either shutdown or restart - the shutdown can take, literally, 60-75 minutes and sometimes longer. Since I usually don't have that long to wait, removing the power cord is an adequate substitute. How can I eliminate these eternal shutdowns?

Software up to date, drivers up to date, BIOS, up to date, memory tested, no errors, switched out 4GIGs RAM, no change, Event viewer , no errors Shut off Avast, still freezes chkdsk /r no change, ccleaner, no change, deframentation, no change.
it used to be after the first reboot, the machine ran fine, until yesterday, when after any and every reboot, 5 minutes, system freezes, nothing works, disk activity can not be heard.

I'm kinda a great gamer and when i download demos to test incoming games, i try running their setup and it takes a lot of time to start. About 2-3 minutes of waiting before asking if i want to open the file because it was downloaded from the internet (just with the demos i downloaded from the net, sure), and another 2-3 minutes to ask for permission to open it (the account security control or something like that). Then the task appears in Task Manager under "process" tab but it has only 64 kb of ram and it remains that way for another 4-5 minutes. Finally it starts (after about 12-15 minutes total), it installs and here's another problem. When the progress bar arrives to the end, it takes about 10 minutes to tell me installation was completed (during these 10 minutes installation does not busy the cpu at all). This problem occures only with setups, but not only with game's setups, with program's setups too.
I know there's not such a big problem "at least they install", but it's kinda annoying waiting about 25-30 minutes total to play a damn demo or to install a program.Has anyone had that problem? How can i fix it? Here there are my specs (it's an HP laptop, 6730s):
Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 @ 1.80 ghz, 4 mb L2 Cache
2 GB Ram
Intel Mobile 4 Series 128 Mb own ram, 796 total
HDD 150 GB (about 42,8 free at this moment)
Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit.

I have 4 vista 32 bit machines. 1 will update beautifully. When I go to run the Windows update, the other 3 "time out". They sit there with a blank box on the screen for well over 5 minutes, before in sheer frustration, I trash it. I know at least 1 machine is saying it has 350Mb of downloads to do, but when I tell it to start, it does nothing. All are running SP1.

When I type a long article in Notepad & paste into WindowsMail line breaks become messed up, forcing me to go back to editing "business" and click/delete redundant line breaks as often as there're lines in a document, if it's 1000 lines, go ahead and spend time clicking for an hour! This make plain text editor unworkable In Vista +WindowsMail environment, due to weird linebreaks handling. Why do I claim it to be weird? BECAUSE IT WAS PERFECT IN WindowsXP. I could create a simple ad/artcile in Notepad, copy/paste into OutloookExpress --> Newsgroup posting or Email, and no linebreaks stupidity. Another hemorrhoid in Vista, sometimes I have a forbidden thought: If WinXP could live for another 10 years albeit with security updates & new hardware drivers that would be nice. When I hear "Vista" it causes heartburn.

i have the notebook since a month and everything works fine. however, i always have that strange sound playing in vista. it happens every 5-10mins, i dont know what it it. its not caused by the hardware, but its played by vista, so to make it clear it is a soundfile. i have no clue, which software or whatever causes it. anyone, who has an idea? and no, it was already there with the original setup, it is not because of any software i installed additionally. i would really be happy, if someone knows how to stop that.

I've been having a problem with my vista where it stops working after about 20-30 minutes of idling. Everything functions until I bring it out of idle and issue a command (like start playing a song) then everything just hangs. Even the time stops working. I've been into the power settings and changed it so everything stays on. The hard drive stays working and the monitors keep running, no screen saver or anything.
I've since updated the graphics driver and moved vista over to SP2, also I've done a virus scan. My system restore dates are unable to take me back to a time when i didn't have this problem (about a week ago). So, to my knowledge, it isn't a hardware problem and It's not a virus, leading me to believe vista has vista'd itself somewhere along the line. Does anyone know how to fix this, or any other steps I should take?

MY Blog has the answer X3's Greener Grass: Link Layer Topology Discovery (KB922120) not included in SP3 no problem!!! Read on...but for those that I just came here to leave a link and can be bothered how to read here goes So imagine that like me, you slipstreamed the latest Service pack onto your existing install disk to make a clean install of XP (insert your edition here) and found out like me that the LLTD while its on the list of updates included with SP3 its not really... Go figure... It happens really... or does it? LLTD just makes it way easier for Vista to see XP in its network map and maybe even make it easier for you to get things working together dure goes help... I see it like a scaled down version of Cisco CDP... Moving on Download the LLTD windowsXP-KB922120-v5-ENU.exe, running it will give you a error not allowing you to install it, but there is a way around it... Seriously! Keep reading!....................

I've been having this kind of problem since I installed Vista. I like Vista very much, but it brings so much problems to me than XP. I often play Age of Empires III and in every 5 minutes it hangs for a short period of time. It hangs 2-3 times and the next thing that will happen is either it will show a black screen or hangs. Windows never responds if either of these happen, so I shut down the computer improperly.

I have just purchased a new laptop with Windows Vista but I am having problems with the screensaver settings and selecting a different image. For some reason the screensaver switches on every 10 minutes even though I have set 20 mins as the time allowance and the screensaver appears as a blackened screen rather than one of the more deocrative options. I have tried re-setting the time/style several times but nothing seems to be changing ---- it becomes slightly irritating when watching media when the screen darkens every 10 minutes!

xboxlive so the router is not the issue, it must be the network card on the pc I am thinking.
Setup of network is as follows
Vista premium pc to
Belkin modem router to
internet.
xbox to belkin router
I have tried fixed connection cable to router or wireless same reuslts.
