I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Vista Home Premium x64 Locks up/Freezes after any wireless connection to the internet is made. The time seemed random at 1st but after some bios/hardware tweaking I can get connected for approx 10 sec before Vista locks up/freezes. It is not like it is becoming "non responsive" - All operations cease - the mouse pointer will not move nor any keyboard command registering (alt+ctrl+del, ctr+shift+backspace, alt+f4, etc.).....nothing. I have to cut the power to restart the computer.
This used to happen while I was playing Assassin's Creed but after adjusting the settings in the bios that has gone to a minimum. I spoke w/ both EVGA and D-Link tech support but they were unable to pinpoint the problem. EVGA suggested that lock ups/freezes are generally caused by the graphics card and/or RAM. I built this rig and all of the most recent drivers/bios versions were used in the installation of the hardware. This is the only thing hindering me from completing my gaming rig. Vista performance rating 5.7 (due to processor - all other ratings at 5.9) Can smoothly run Crysis at 1600x1200, No Anti-A, and all other settings on Very High w/ DX10.

My HDD activity indicator lights up for 20 minutes and even mouse cursor freezes some times. This is because of uTorrent 1.8.3 and video conversion activity I guess. Will increasing of RAM from 2gb to 6gb help? Can I combine 2x1gb 800mhz installed modules with new 2x2gb 1066mhz modules? Page file is on G: HDD already, not C:. Windows Vista is x64.

If I do not use my computer (a Lenovo T61 loaded w/ Vista Home Premium) every 15 minutes or so, it reverts to the log-in screen and I have to enter my password again. How do I extend the time period before Vista locks me out?

I have 4 vista 32 bit machines. 1 will update beautifully. When I go to run the Windows update, the other 3 "time out". They sit there with a blank box on the screen for well over 5 minutes, before in sheer frustration, I trash it. I know at least 1 machine is saying it has 350Mb of downloads to do, but when I tell it to start, it does nothing. All are running SP1.

I have just purchased a new laptop with Windows Vista but I am having problems with the screensaver settings and selecting a different image. For some reason the screensaver switches on every 10 minutes even though I have set 20 mins as the time allowance and the screensaver appears as a blackened screen rather than one of the more deocrative options. I have tried re-setting the time/style several times but nothing seems to be changing ---- it becomes slightly irritating when watching media when the screen darkens every 10 minutes!

I've had some trouble with my computer and I'm not sure if it's ram problems or graphics or anything. I've had the following problems: Vertical very thin pixel lines that show up random places nvlddmkm has stopped responding and recovered. And within the last 2 days it's done it 3 times, I'm having my screen go blank with random colors. Green, White, and then the last is black that goes away and comes back like the monitor is trying to reset itself. Always black tho. I have to restart in order to get it to reboot. So I'm thinking I have bad ram, my monitor is a Westinghouse 17" Flat panel I got in 2005. My graphics card (8800GT) is about 11 months old.

Can anyone explain why Windows periodically freezes when the screen saver is running? At first I thought it was due to the Windows Live Photo Gallery. After running for several hours (overnight, for e.g.), it would freeze on one picture. Usually moving the mouse would eventually close the screen saver and I'd return to the desktop.
I then changed to a regular screen saver, Mystify. Usually this isn't a problem, but today when I moved the mouse, the screen saver froze. I couldn't soft boot, actually had to shut down manually. This is the second time this has happened.
I've checked whether I'm using the latest video driver using device manager, and it says everything is up to date. I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, driver version 7.15.11.7530. Could there be a device conflict? How would I be able to tell?

I recently built a computer with a SATA hdd and a IDE disk drive. I had also bought vista ultimate 64 bit. I cannot install vista. the screen just freezes, about 20-50% through the expanding files part. when I boot the hdd up, I get the missing bootmgr thing, several times. I tried the tip by lifehacker to use the repair settings thing. I cannot seem to install vista. I even tried to make a copy of the dvd from the comp I am typing with now.

I am having problems with my computer randomly crashing. Didnt have a clue what was causing it. So I decided to: update all my drivers that I could think to update (used device manager to do so). I cleaned my computers inside. Updates my virus scanner - am protected. (Avast) cleaned my registery (I used a downloaded registry cleaner from a computer magazine website, they reviewed it, and i tried it) Disk Defrag used. Finally found some info when my computer crashed. Went online to find information and got some software that helped me get more info about my problems. (see attachments)....

I was trying to install all my old software but I have recently come across a problem that I need some assistance with. When I try to install this software DVD Copy Software from DVDFab | Copy DVD to PSP, DVDR or iPod it starts the install, confirms that I want to install it and then the screen dims and basically freezes. I go to the task manager and it doesn't list the install on there, but when I cancel out of there it has cleared up. I know that this software works on vista from the manufacturer. This has happened with a few install attempts.

This computer ran Vista x64 fine for over a year. I sold it to brought it back to me the other day stating it started up, but just a black screen. First thought was power supply. Replaced the power supply with a 500 watt Thermaltake. System POST's. Gets to windows screen with the loading bar. Freezes. Decide to re-install thinking maybe there was too many unsucessful boots.
Install is VERY slow. Never have I seen it do this. It takes forever to get into the language screen. Finally once installed, Freezes at the windows screen with the loading bar underneath, yet again. Fooling around, I popped out the CMOS battery and cut all power to the system (Resetting CMOS, yes I know I can do it via Jumpers as well but I dont have the manual handy) and low and behold once I replace the battery and reboot I get into vista. I shutdown, restart to see if everythings all set. Frozen at the windows loading bar screen again...............

I recently received The Orange Box, and wish to play Half-Life 2. I am running a Vista Home Premium x64 machine updated to SP1. However, whenever I run Half-Life 2, either from within Steam or from a shortcut, Half-Life 2 starts, adjusts the screen resolution, and freezes on a black screen with a frozen Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I have added "-32bit" to the shortcut line and have set the program to run in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode. This fix has made Portal run fine, so I don't know why it won't work for Half-Life 2.

1. when I play games (quake4) and watch dvds, every now and again (more often with games, sometimes with dvds) the screen freezes and I have to reboot by reset button (nothing else work). As my PC is new, I don't know whether it's a hardware or software problem.
2. I have MS Office 2003 loaded, and again the Word would stop responding every so often and sometimes it restarts, sometimes it doesn't.
3. Finally, a few programs, especially catalyst, would stop working as soon as boot up is completed, but again, this happens only at times. To top it off, sometimes vista will reboot itself automatically, as if I pressed the reset button.
I've checked Bios updates from Asus, and while there are newer updates, they don't seem to be for the problems I'm having, and my realtek driver is the latest version (I've compared my version to what's on Asus' site)

I have new computer, but about two week after purchase this problem started. The screen freezes with a Yellow and white checkard effect, then goes black. The computer is still running but not the screen. The only thing to do it hold the on off button on the tower and reboot. This happened a few times, and I was going to contact my supplier. Then it stopped for about two weeks. But it has just happened again?

I recently used a VISTA compatible utility (TWEAK VI) to sort and clean my registry. I then added several new applications, including Office 2007. My system has now become very unstable and often freezes, does a blue screen data dump, or just shuts down with no explanation. I am to far removed from the registry clean to reach a restore point for it, so I am hoping there is a repair option on the VISTA install disk, like the XP disk has. So far the only option I find is to reinstall the whole program.

I answered no less than 60 quests here. In exchange I got only 1 response ot my own quest., and none to the other SIMPLE quest. Simple for people who use the stuff I was askign about. menus pop up ion left & right now instead of organized right or left side (menus which expand to the either side of mouse cursor).
Also how to keep laptop's internal LCD resolutiuon while activating dual external/internal or external display, because when it goes back to internal only, ALL windows I opened on external display get distorted now - have to restore their size/location due to resoltuion jump up & down.
This can be simply solved by keeping internal LCD never changed, just allow external display to drop down to whatever resoltuion it wants to if Videocard is unable to keep up with TWO displays at such high resoltuion equal to internal. That would be fine. Problem is internal refuses to stay at its native resoltuio whenever external display is connected.
It goes back to native 1440x900 only after external is disabled, and now all over again I have to restore every window size/location that was ever opened on external display, because it "experienced" a different resoltuion as an open window, now it opens in the same crippled size oin internal LCD. One solution is obviously using an external display with same resolution and Videocard capable of dual output of the same high resoltuion as my laptop internal LCD whiuch happens to be a CAD/Engineering workstation type of high-end laptop that goes to 1440x900. I know that. But I have to deal with current external LCD TV actually, not a computer display.

my music has started to play back really weird. it sounds like the vocals have almost disapeared, and it is all echoey/distorted. I ripped a cd yesterday, and transfered this to my phone and it plays OK. I really don't know what is wrong. Its a Vista HP laptop. could it be the audio settings or the actual music files that are knackered. Ive got about 900 albums worth of cd's filed so far to go onto my Tvix media player with loads more to go, and I will be gutted if this lot has to come off and be re-loaded.

I just installed Vista Home Premium onto my pc, and everything seems to be running ok, except for the sound. No matter what application I run, my sound seems to skip a lot. It's most noticeable when listening to music or TV. Various media players don't make a difference, and it acts like my pc is starving for resources. I've got a 3.2Ghz cpu w/2Gb of memory and plenty of hard drive space. 256Mb ATI video card, and Audigy sound card, but it looks like Vista makes the applications run off of the virtual memory, even when nothing else is running. Is anyone having issues like this? I've disabled services and features till I'm blue in the face. Nothing seems to help, although increasing CPU priority for the process seems to make it better, but it's still skipping.

I just now decided to join but I've been looking around the forums for a while now as a guest. Recently I was referred to the website laptopvideo2go.com by these forums. I went there and because I had the old factory installed version 98.15 driver for my NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, I decided to download one of the newer ones. By the way, I have a HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop. The driver that I chose was 7.15.0011.7770. It installed correctly and everything worked fine except for the fact that whenever I logged on, the screen would flash black and the graphics would become distorted and blurry and my desktop icons would look really magnified. But then, a few seconds later, the black screen would flash again and the graphics would go back to normal and everything would Today, however, the graphics did not revert back to normal. Everything stayed really big and fuzzy. I thought that since the driver that I downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com was not digitally signed, or whatever, that it was the problem. So, I went to the HP website and proceeded to download the original NVIDA update (98.15), that I had previously, for my driver.
It installed like normal until it got halfway in the installation loading bar. Then, my computer suddenly restarted itself and said that Windows did not start correctly and gave me the option to run some repair thing. I did, and it couldn't fix anything. So, I restarted again and got the same thing and went into safe mode and uninstalled my driver. Then, I updated the driver with the same 98.15 update and it worked and told me that I needed to restart. So I did and I got the "Windows did not start correctly" message again and I went into safe mode. The driver had not installed and everything was still big and fuzzy. However, the driver was still deleted. So, I restarted again, got the same message, and went into "Last known good configuration" mode, which I am in now. And, of course, the display is still really big and fuzzy. if you select the start normally option instead of the repair option, it will proceed to load with the Windows loading bar but will do that automatic restart thing before it gets to the Windows Vista logo every time. So, it's like a never-ending loop of restarts. I did some research online and I found out nothing, so I guess that my problem is unique. I'd really like to have my computer's original crystal-clear graphics back, but right now the priority is actually getting it to log on.

Because of the recent fiasco with Creative / Daniel K the straw has broken the camels back and I am trying real hard to not use my X-Fi XtremeGamer, and never buy Creative again. Although I didn't personally have many issues with it (and Alchemy is great for Vista...wish there was one for everyone) I don't want to spend my life wondering what will happen next with my drivers..
I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R rev 1.0. This board has the Realtek ALC889A chip and when I first started using it in XP I was so very impressed with both the quality and the features. Specifically speaker fill. I love upmixing my music to 5.1 and at the time I was having weird issues with Creatives own expansion setting so I happily used my onboard for quite a while.
Then I decided to upgrade to Vista and noticed immediately that things were not working the way they had on XP.. DirectSound removal aside, I couldn't even get music to upmix properly.. So here I am again, trying to get by without my X-Fi and I've installed the latest drivers from Realtek's web site for Vista x64........

I've an Asus f5sl laptop with Vista Home Premium (32bit) but it's been freezing on me lately. When I boot up, it gets to the black screen with the green bar but after a few seconds, the green bar freezes and I can't log in. Occasionally it boots up after around half an hour but then Vista periodically freezes for a few seconds before resuming (which is annoying when trying to write out something etc)
I don't see any problems in Safe Mode so is possibly a driver? I've updated all my drivers, completely updated using WIndows Update, ran antispyware, used System Restore etc. Only problem is; I've moved to a new country, and like a fool, I left my Vista start up disk back home. Which I would otherwise have tried.
