i have a laptop with ati radeon x2300 graphics card 164mb of memory. When im playing games and running my benchmark system i get invisible lines going from left to right on my display. i can see the lines whenever my player moves. i have also seen a decrease in frames per second. its a sony vaio laptop. the drivers are the most updated and changing stuff in the 3D section of the control center DOeSNT.
View 7 RepliesWhen starting up Vista, my display is always off to the left of the screen, meaning my start button is way off the screen and there's a black space on the right, like the display has simply been moved 2 inches to the left. I can fix it, by entering NVIDIA Control Panel and switch connector: back and forth between HDMI-HDTV (audio disabled) and HDMI - HDTV (audio enabled). but if the pc enters sleep or I reboot the problem is back.
Now I know the general problem because I had it with xp also, seems my monitor likes to tell my pc that it's a tv (I'm sorry I'm not into the tech lingo). And I've fixed it previously by changing codes in .ini files and ect. but I'd rather not do it on a new crisp clean first time install of Vista, anyone know of this problem and how to fix it for good?
I do not use the documents folder nor the desktop for data storage. My data is always on another hard drive and I an extra internal and several external hard drives. Everytime I open explorer, the folder list shows with Documents expanded. I have to minimize that, then scroll up and minimum my user name folder, then maximize the Computer folder. That is what I want to see when I open explorer.
It is possible to save that setting. I have seen a lot of posts on folder view, but I am not sure if anyone actually talks about the left half of this view setting. Why is My computer now part of the desktop and sub of user? Already in XP I hated that the C drive always opened explanded.
I like to clean up any e-mail I send, but I cannot seem to get rid of the blue line on the left of the message screen.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was listening to the 911 call about the chimp attacking the woman in Conn. when all at once my computer screen had these horizontal lines running all across the screen!!I wasn't watching the video ,just listeneing to the audio,after about 12 0r 13 minutes is when this happened,it was in full screen mode with a picture of the chimp on it. It was just a picture, no moving or anything. This has happened before,(just the lines are a new development) it never shut off it,this time, just stopped responding. what could have caused this?? It looks like the resolution decreased and it even has these small horizontal lines flashing you can notice when you look real close to it. It resembles ?static?. I reinstalled Vista the other day just because and it still does this and I have no idea why or how to fix it.
I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and migrated my old Outlook Express folders and emails as per the Help instructions. All appeared well as all the old folders appear in Windows Mail. However there appear to be NO emails in any of the folders. What is also strange is that some of these apparently empty folders appear in bold displaying the number of unread emails in the folder. Presumably some indexing fault has occurred - repeated attempts at importing have failed.

I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)
I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis may actually be a Linksys problem, but I hope there's a workaround in Vista. Linksys wireless print server; network of computers (mostly Vista 32, some XP, one Vista 64, one Linux) that print through it to an HP LaserJet 1200 printer using HP PCL 5 drivers. All print jobs are OK, but many of them (somewhat unpredictably) are preceded by a junk page containing a couple of lines of PCL commands ("PJL COMMENT" and the like).
It is not clear whether the junk page is the beginning of the job or the tail end of the previous job -- thus I'm not even sure which computers are generating it. I think the former. That is, I think it is a set of PCL comments sent at the beginning of the job. Linksys drivers are not on the PCs. Instead I print through LPR or RAW protocol (both give the same results) on a TCP/IP port as recommended by Linksys.
I have tried the WinPrint print processor and 2 versions of the HP print rocessor. This seems to slightly change what's on the junk pages but not eliminate them. Printing several jobs in succession from the same computer, I usually don't get junk pages in front of them. But the actual conditions are hard to pin down. Trying to run around and try all the combinations is very tedious
I can't see my cd-drive in My Computer or device manager. I could reinstall windows, because quite new computer, but because I do not have cd-drive visible...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am knowledgeable about XP and have used VISTA ultimate for months now but I have found a problem I cant figure out involving the "Document" folder and files under the "Owner" user. Up to to a few weeks ago I did have the document folder under the user "OWNER" encrypted using Vista encryption option and as expected it would show up as blue file names and could be open and saved under "owner". Now when ever I open up any of the edit programs ( Word, Notepad ) it doesn't show that there is a document folder. If I save a file it goes some were never to be found again. When I look for the document folder ( C: userowner ) All the folders are there Except the document folder. I check under the DOS prompt and it cant see it there. When I try and create a document folder it says that it already exist.

When I click this down arrow the folders become invisible (closed) but I'm unable to reopen them unless I close Explorer and reopen it. Also, without having to to install 3rd party software, is there a way in Explorer tot display ONLY the Folder structure of my drives? I want only to 'see' C: open and the other drives closed. When I type a long article in Notepad & paste into WindowsMail line breaks become messed up, forcing me to go back to editing "business" and click/delete redundant line breaks as often as there're lines in a document, if it's 1000 lines, go ahead and spend time clicking for an hour! This make plain text editor unworkable In Vista +WindowsMail environment, due to weird linebreaks handling. Why do I claim it to be weird? BECAUSE IT WAS PERFECT IN WindowsXP. I created a 40 Gig system partition which is now down to its last GB which i find ridiculous seeing i have minimal applications installed. I have deleted the memory dump file and disabled this function, and run a defrag which now has given me 4GB of space. Now a quick check shows about 22 GIG of installed apps including the OS and a 5 GIG pagefile.

It use to be windows xp as a second OS but i deleted it and it left me with 15 gigs of space. I can format it and shrink it just to test if it functions and it does. oh I also tried using partition wizard home edition, it did not work, and i tried to use EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition free edition but it said that its no compatibale with 64-bit even though i got it from the 64-bit section.( and yes just incase, I right clicked and ran as administrator )

Avast Pro 4.8 has been finding viruses in both Safe Mode and regular. Search and Destroy can't seem to deal with them. Backing up my data right now. Ready to reinstall everything. S&D reports clear. IE7 does not always work. I reset and internet connection gets blocked.

I just noticed that the audio from the left comes from the right speaker and vice-versa. This happens randomly and the problem suddenly disappears. The problem is happening again and I don't know how to swap the two speakers. A restart will temporarily fix the problem but later on it gets swapped again. I can't switch the position of the speakers because this is a laptop. This gets very annoying when I'm playing games such as CS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
I am missing the little icons that are inside the green folders on the left hand side . Is there a way to bring that back?

Not sure what you call the panels that ariced when you push the logo key between the left Ctrl & Alt, but things have disappeared over the past several months. The first I noticed was that the DOCUMENTS sign no longer took me to my documents folder, as it used to do. The other things have been happening (or not happening) in the past few weeks. I don't recall everything that used to be on the right side panel, but here's what's left:........
Is there any way to stop the navigation pane from shifting left/right when opening/closing folders. It is VERY annoying. On a positive note, I have found several fixes for problems in these forums.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy acer 5335 is brand new and has vista basic. when i first connected to the internet i installed all available updates including explorer 8 and vista service pack 2. i also downloaded avg anti virus and sunbelt firewall. the problem i have is that some links in some sites will not open at all, some need a right click to select 'open' from the menu, and others open as they should with just a single left click. examples, on my hotmail page, mails will open with a single left click, but the reply or new mail controls will not respond to right or left.
i can left click to view details of cars from the listings, but if i want to view the extra pictures i need to right click and select open. google search works fine and most forum sites as i've been looking for a fix have been ok too. the having to right click isn't too much of a problem but not being able to reply to mail is going to be a pain.
